“Is Shakespeare still relevant and should it be taught in schools today?

There’s a question that asks if Shakespeare is still relevant and should it be taught in school?
I do believe it is still relevant, but at the same time I don’t believe it’s relevant/necessary to read
here’s why. Although it’s an interesting book and the plays are a bit interesting too they’re also
boring after a while. The reason I say it’s still relevant is because most English teachers nowadays
use this book for their class. The reason I say it’s not important is because the people in
Shakespeare's stories weren’t important they weren’t any known king's or anything, it was all make
believe.

Here’s my first supporting idea. “The themes in “Othello” are still applicable to many
audiences today. Betrayal is a key theme presented in Othello which still happens in today’s world”
(Bartleby Writing). I also have another example of “betraying” in the story. I believe that it is more
of Iago's fault for all of the commotion throughout the story. I also believe that he isn't the one to
blame for their trust but its Othello's fault. If Othello thought Iago was untrustworthy why would he
believe the stuff he says and does. This piece of evidence was from my Othello Log 5. “That thou,
who hast had my purse.” This quote shows that jealousy was already a huge part of the story
because they were stealing which shows envy.

My second supporting idea is that “racism is a significant addition presented in the play, and
unfortunately still is in contemporary society.” “Madness and jealousy are a thing also and it’s a big
part of the book/play.” (Bartleby Writing) “Desdemona whose father didn’t like her lover because
of his race.” Desdemona’s father was a racist he didn’t like Othello because of his skin color. This
just adds more weight on why I think this is relevant. I say its relevant because it gives us some
information on our history. It shows how racism was a huge factor back then.

Last but not least, my third supporting idea.”O, beware, my lord, of jealousy!” That’s
another example of jealousness throughout this book. Here why I think this book “Othello” should
be relevant, and somewhat irrelevant. I say it’s still relevant because its gives us a little bit of
knowledge about our history, and also a lot of knowledge from the English perspective. There’s a
ton of words I’ve never heard of until I read this book. Today’s society doesn’t use those words
anymore so they could be considered irrelevant. This book is irrelevant because its not based on a
true story or anything it’s all made up just for entertainment.

In conclusion, I believe it should still be relevant but at the same time it shouldn’t be. If it
stays relevant, it’ll give teachers something other than nouns and verbs to teach their students.
Othello also makes so nice plays that the school could have also.
