A REPORT ON

THE CONRTRIBUTION OF SAMANJA MAZAN FAMA TO NIGERIAN LITERATURE

BY

OBIEGBUNAM CHISOM

APRIL 2019

1
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report examines the contribution of Alhaji Usman Baba Pategi (Samanja Mazan Fama) to

the literary development of Nigerian literature and arts. Samanja mazan fama, a play that aired

first as a radio program on Radio Kaduna was aimed at giving civilians a glimpse into the lives

of soldiers in the barracks and the rhetoric of military personnel seemingly averse behaviors. It

also carried heavy undertone of the author’s religious beliefs and values and provided a comic

relief for its audience from the happenings in its day. It was celebrated by both civilians and

highly placed officers of the Nigerian military respectively.

In the course of this study, it was discovered that very little research has been done into the

development of literature in many Nigerian languages as compared to the English language

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The literary explosion of African cosmology, history and tradition, ingeniously captured in both

oral and written mode, was kick-started barely a century ago. Today in the twenty-first century, it

is a different song. Suffice to say that Nigeria's expanding literature primarily revolved round the

people's interaction with Western civilisation a few decades ago. Notwithstanding, this much

celebrated literature stems from a synergy of dynamic pre-colonial artistic ability and theatrical

performances, paving way for what one may today refer to as hybrid or "a mutant/mutating

literature". Thus, a diachronic review of Nigerian literature must encompass the indigenous

forms of literature which include dance, song, acrobatic display, fable, folktales, proverbs,

idiomatic expressions poetry and of course drama. Before the advent and spread of literacy in the

twentieth century, these 'texts' were performed or recited, only preserved through memory. From

the very lengthy epic (poetry) to single-sentence formulations such as the proverb, these varied

organic 'texts' constitute the verbal art and folklore of the Nigerian oral traditions, which has

been an intrinsic and vital aspect of the lives of the people for many generations. (Olaopa, 2013)

1.1 Author’s background

Son of the late Etsu Pategi, Samanja walked into national prominence and became a household

name playing the dutiful, witty and one of the most iconic characters in the history of drama on

Nigerian television “Sergeant-Major” in the long rested Nigerian Television Authority (NTA)

drama series Samanja, which ran for decades on national television.

4
An iconoclastic actor who has had a rich acting career, the idea to create a mock military drama

programme that will focus on the lives of soldiers, off, on and in the barracks came shortly after

the Nigerian civil war. But the inspiration as Samanja revealed came with his enlistment into the

Nigerian Army in 1969.

He explains: “I was with the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) before the war started.

When it started, some military officers went round seeking those who can volunteer to serve in

the Army. I volunteered because I considered it a call to serve my country. So I took permission

from my boss at the NBC and the next place I found myself was at the Army depot in Zaria,

where we were trained and were later deployed.

“I was one of the few people that were sent to the Army Signal School in Lagos. It was while in

the Army that I started observing how our Sergeant Major controlled the other ranks and related

with his superiors. And as an active soldier, it was easy for me to gist and interact with the rank

and file. And so after the war, I left the Army and returned to my first love, which is drama.

Acting gives me joy. It makes me happy.’’

No doubt, the programme achieved its objective. It had a huge followership and was a must-

watch for those who followed drama on television. The programme also got the full endorsement

of the military as exemplified by the support that the cast and crew got from top military brass.

Samanja Mazan Fama was a show originally broadcast on NTA Kaduna and radio Kaduna in

1973 but later placed on the national network in the late 1980s. The show's main protagonist was

a character played a popular writer and actor from Northern Nigeria, Usman Baba Pategi.

After starring in Yusuf's Ladan's 'Zaman Duniya Iyawa Ne', Pategi went on to have a starring

vehicle in Samanja which means sergeant-major. The play center's around his character's antics

and mixes comedy and drama to entertain the audience. The show's setting is a barrack and

illustrates various situations and escapes of Pategi's character in the barracks. The show gained

popularity and Pategi's character's verbal style ranged from Hausa and 'soldier speak', a mixed

English and Hausa language to pidgin. (Nigerianwiki.com, 2019).

Usman Baba Pategi was born in Niger state formerly a part of the old Kwara State. He was born

on 20/5/1942. His father King Usman died when he was very young, so his mother became his

sole parent and in the care of everything that had to do with his life. Former Samani Mahama

Fama named his father Usman, the Emir of Fategi, which is thus called the full name Usman

Baba Pategi. As a young boy he was loving and enjoyed good relationships.

He followed the practice of a Muslim by studying for sometime as a boy on the board. Even

though he was a prince, he was put as a young boy in the school for science and education. He

6
graduated from Elementary School in Pategi in 1952, at the age of ten and later graduated from

Middle School of Ilorin in 1955. Usman Baba Pategi was one of the most successful students in

the school. He was also one of the students representing their school, competing in mathematics

and so on, even then Usman Baba Pategi, was interested in the performance, and practice of

school plays . After the Elementary Secondary School in Ilori, he was employed at the Public

Works, Department Mechanical in Kaduna, now called the Ministry of Works. He then moved to

the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (N.B.C) in Ikko, Lagos, in 1961; and then transferred to

Kaduna (R.T.K), that is, Radio Television in the Hausa language. From then on he was in the

radio service. When the civil war broke out, he joined the military service. After the civil war,

he left the military and returned home in the year 1968. Usman Baba Pategi was one of Kaduna's

radio and television operators. that time, although he was not the author of the plays. Some of the

plays included include the "Malam Jatau Prize School(Mallam Jatau Na Albarkawa)" of

Muhammadu Ango Zaria.

In an interview in 2014, When asked “What was the programme that shaped you?”

He answered : “At NBC I worked under the Abubakar Inna Pate, Yusuf Ladan and the late

Muhmmadu Ango Zaria, who was the producer of Drama. The programme entitled Mallam Jatau

Na Albarkawa was a mock university and they methodology was comedy and satire about

brilliant and weak students in a class. (Daily Trust, 2014).

In this theateric play, he played a variety of parts, according to him. He also featured in such

plays as: "The World Warriors" and "The Silver Concert Series" and the "Theater plays" series

with the late Inuwa Mazo. Alhaji Yusuf Ladan, Iyan Zazzau, was the writer of the play and

Usman Baba Pategi, his deputy. After Alhaji Yusuf Ladan left the radio service, Alhaji Usman

Baba Pategi was given the job of writing and recording at the radio station. As a result, he gained

7
a lot of experience in creating and writing theater. Being a part of the department, he was proud

of his role, as the chairman of the department, and introduced him to the "Fighter Samurai" who

was the author of the program and introduced it to the Kaduna TV and TV.

It is interesting to note that Alhaji Usman Baba Pategi, the movie industry, is the author and

writer of the play Samanja Mazan Fama, and he also emerged as a National TV star, which is

why he is called "Samanja". In another interview he says” we try to maintain a good relationship

between the soldiers and the civilians. And let the civilians know or learn how the life looks like

in the barracks. If a soldier comes to the town and misbehaves, may be you don't know what has

brought him to take that action; you will like to know why soldiers behave that way. That is why

I put lots of things to my programme so that if you see such things happen in military, you will

not be surprised because you know the type of life soldiers live. It will not be surprising for you

seeing them behaving that way. Like the soldiers too, I try to portray and maintain peaceful co-

existence with the civilians. Because everybody is a civilian before he joins the Army. So if you

become a soldier today, that does not mean that a civilian is a bloody fool. You are once a

civilian before you become a soldier. That is what I always try to portray in my plays.

I write a lot of scripts for radio and television plays. I go to places seeking petty jobs so that I can

keep the soul moving. That is what I do. (Modern Ghana. (2019).

8
2.0 Other works and contributions of the author
Usman Baba Pategi was the author of the play "World Wawa girlfriend, which aired in the

Federal Radio Kaduna twice a week, was also presented on Wednesday about 3:30 o'clock in the

evening and a repeat on Saturday at 9 o'clock and 2: 30 pm, and is still aired every week.

According to the interviews and studies conducted by others, he wrote plays to warn or expand

advocacy for education among the Hausas (who are well known for their averseness to western

influence) or comic reliefs or entertainment. It can be noticed that in writing and organizing his

plays, there are other undertones such as religion, and culture. Culturally Hausa, Hausa write and

edit the presentation, not violated the conditions of life of the Hausa community. Also walking

the phase transitions to the message has arrived for those who are introduced to the audiences to

plays more enjoyable and endurance of listening to the play during the promotion. The players

who started the theater and they are these: ------ Kasimu Yero Ibrahim Bayi (late). Umaru

Danjuma (Kasagi of Halima). Aaron Danjuma (Death Must Be). Muhammad (Idon Mubarak).

The Bread of Isa Benedict (Baruch).

In addition to such athletes, Samanja was able to interact with other players in some radio and

television stations. This gave him the opportunity to create a play entitled "For The Fighter, for a

Horseman.: Ga Filli, ga mai Doki" After creating and playing a play, he was introduced to a

joint venture between Kano's best players. Kaduna, Sokoto, and Jos, were featured on the

television in all of these states. The program was held between 19851986. In our interview with

him on 12/7/2011, he told me that his wives were married to fourteen children, including ten men

and four women. and eleven grandchildren. When looking at how this hero contributed to the

development of drama scripts, designations and presentations, he would be honored in this area

as he continues to write and organize and publish on the media. news. 1.8 Search Tips. Of

course, every job, study, or research before success, there are many ways to reach the goal. Well,

to get the best information about this project, many options are being used to achieve this goal to

implement this research. As a result of the search engine, these methods include: The first way to

get better information is by interviewing and discussing the content and the author of the plays

that are being analyzed directly. Usman Baba Pategi, an artist and Samanja Mazan Fama,

accompanied by some actors, who performed and performed at the press premises, particularly

Offer) Jobs on the" World Adult Budget "program, and" Ultimate Hunter "program. He has

studied his life history and being a very famous Theater. The purpose of this project is not only

for a single player but also for a great deal of study, for this is part of his work as a part of the

Gymnasium plays. This is the case at the International Academy for Educational Studies at the

University of Usman (Sokoto University), entitled "The Grammar of Alhaji Usman Baba Pategi

(Samanja) for the Hausa plays," by Garba R (2007). The lecturer commented on his history and

places of action and organized his radio and television programs in the Hausa plays, especially

on the "Famous People's Day" program and some of the "World Buddhist Girl" program in

traditional fashion. and education, propaganda, praise and praise in the 'Samanja' and 'World

Adult Buddhist' plays. She studies on the program. "Help" and "Everyone's Home" and some of

his study was based on the theme and warning of the Samurai and the socialist movement of the

military. In the study of the book D. Hunter, he analyzed the media and TV programs since the

beginning of the World War II program, and The World Buddhist Budget also emerged in the

influence of some of the languages used, such as English and French and non-English. All in the

Race Girl's World War II program. The project has a close relationship with this task though it is

most important to focus on the existence of Usman Baba Fategi as a movie and a very talented

star in the Samurai Championship. In the interview with Samanja on 14/6/2003, the Weekly

Trust newspaper on page 33 explains his life story and his Samurai history and the nature of his

plans after leaving homework The radio and its efforts to seek support from Companies and

Governments to continue the presentation of the Theater as it was in the past to continue learning

and communication with entertainments. Shehu, (2009), wrote a poem entitled "The Popular

Popular Culture and Poltical Discourse in Nigeria some Insights into Samanja Drama on Radio

Kaduna." In his commentary, he commented on how to use it. The play was a great way to

deliver a message to the community leaders when he considered the plays our satellite came out

as a player in the news industry, especially in the Kaduna State Broadcasting Corporation. .

Taking some of the plays that the satellite has taken into account the social and social aspects of

the society here, it takes the traditional Hausa tradition of the Persian Empire by transmitting the

emails to the King into

11
gossip and laziness during the sedentary session in the palace and the influence of the emperor

has influenced the rulers. At this stage there is a great deal that has never been the one who has

been a long-term passionate passion for the performance of this famous artist and actor for such a

skill technology designed by God to play sports at Kaduna State Radio. While some of the

previous activities have taken over his role, they are more likely to be a player of the radio, but

they do not say anything to write about this player in their role in ~ the style of the drama he

performed. THREE SUMMARY: BUDGET IN THE FAMILY PROGRAM AND

PRINCIPLES. 3.0 Introduction Many experts have tried to explain the role of a drama, including

psychologist. Jonal, (1959: 55) The Use of Drama, in this book, describes the drama that this is

the catalyst or even the taste. He continues: "Playing is a turning point in human life and

eliminating bad culture in society is crucial to the role of play as well. 1. 2. It creates culture and

enhances them, for the people that follow them as a model of their rule. It also provides

entertainment and entertainment and entertainment for its viewers. For example, sometimes a

person finds himself in a state of depression when he looks at a play that makes him feel

uncomfortable and sees that he is lost because of the impact that the play has on him.

3. Theater, preventing people from doing bad things for example, betrayal, slander, robbery,

corruption, and others. 4. 5. 6. 7. Exercise makes his imagination realistic. The art plays a role in

promoting the language of a community by using its language, which teaches players how to

speak in the public. Exhibitions teach moral and ethical values to awaken them as self-reliance,

12
honesty, perseverance and perseverance. Exhibitions warn against your hands, practice good, and

forbid bad people. Yar-Aduwa, (2007: 22) gave the artwork of a movie that says "playback of

every kind is very useful to the audience (editors and viewers and read or listen to) their

everyday life. Here are some of the benefits of theater: Theater shows community technology

and enhances it. Exhibitions provide entertainment and entertainment for people. Exhibitions are

a source of reflection in people's minds and in teaching them well. Exercise plays a role in

rehabilitating people's attitudes by reflecting on the good things people want to do, and making

connections with them so that people can take the initiative. And they show people some bad

behavioral behaviors to the community and warn the people to avoid these bad things

Exhibitions are a way to train children to develop positive attitudes toward society's needs.

Exhibitions teach people what they do not know, and they know it. "Yar Abbas, (2007: 22) We

see the dramatic role of the artists and researchers as well. give access to the activities of this

outstanding player and the contribution he gives to his publicity. At this Grandfather's site will

be a key role in the field of Education, Religion, and Politics. 3.1 Knowledge Meaning. At the

University of Bayero University of Kano (2006: 205) Education is: "(i) Knowledge, especially of

law and religion. (ii) scientific and literary studies (iii) understanding or understanding. "So one

knows what he does not know about the subject of education and that knowledge helps him in

his life. Also in Encarta Dictionaries (2009). Education is transmitted through learning and

teaching at school or at an appropriate place to search for Sani. 3.2 The Importance of Education

and Its Impact for the Future. Knowledge of life that is based on the importance of education and

its influence on the Hinduism is that everyone who is educated differs from one who does not

have the knowledge of social science. Religious or modern-day academics are faced with ideas

13
that can be used in the knowledge that it possesses. Ibrahim, (1982: 88) highlighted the

importance of education, saying: "If a person gathers a lot of education, he goes home and

establishes the school himself and becomes a teacher and goes to him to study. Occasionally

when a teacher finds a student to gain education, he recommends staying at home and paying for

others. It is also among these scholars that you meet with the judges and the mentors. " 3.3 plays

That Include Education in the World Wrong Girl News. There's a topic of education that the

player has in his 'Everybody Leaving Home' of the World Widespread Buddhist in Exit "as he

emphasized the importance of work and education as one reads: Mr. Jibo: Eh, kasan Education if

you do it and work it is something else.

Religion has a profound impact on the Hausa tradition before Islam and the Christian religion of

Hausawa have a traditional religion that has a tendency in their lives since the birth of the

ancestors. In addition, MSIbrahim, (1982), commented on traditional Hausa tradition, says: "It is

idolatry, that is, traditional religion has existed by pursuing some of the ways that people have

committed themselves to slavery to others. things to meet their needs. Such worship has great

potential in the world. " He added that 'Tsafi is one of Hausa tradition, but such worship is not a

cultured form of worship. But since most Hausawa people are in Islam, the decline of those who

do not join is called apostate and is still practicing religion. 3.6 The plays That Include Religion

in the World's Degree Buddhist Religion has a profound impact on all the Hausa-speaking

interactions in everyday life, so it is often linked to its purpose in the plays of the writer. There

are many ways to illustrate this. In his "Everyone's home" play, he pointed out:

Shafi: God has joined us.

14
In the second episode of the play, there is a link between life and religious teachings as follows:

Risk: By all means I do not want to get rid of it.

Iroro: Yes! If I tell you the truth it will not hurt you, but what I want you to give me about three

months ago Allah is pleased with me if I find that I will bring it to you.

The fourth episode contains religious teachings of compassionate older ones and helps them to

manage their lives and their abilities and they are more important to their grandchildren. For

example:

Hosea: Thank you, now, this is not faith, let's go and let you get your stuff, what to do for you.

The seventh edition in the play was specially addressed for those who were leaving their home or

village to stay in bed and have children and to show their ancestors the following:

Father: Baba: Baba: Iroro : Father: What God has created you to be born in this world of God.

Make sure your spouse knows where their son is from your cousin. Allah says, "Sweet milk".

Allahu Akbar The people are the recipients of His religion.

He is committed to religious devotion in "Man except Allah". The first thing to do is study that

belief in everything is from God and is thankful as it was first mentioned in the following verse:

Left: Thankfully, we thank God So also in the third episode of the play after he was given the

job he came to seek and then thanked God as religious teachings show. For example: Horse:

Thank you! Thank you thank you. It is the teachings of religion that all human beings have

acquired from God or lost from Him. This is why in the sixth edition, it is: Echo: Amman, I want

to further tell you that God created his servant and provided for his servant. In a play written by

15
the author entitled "Life" in the first part of the play, you started to play with the teachings of

religion by patiently telling and giving up everything you could find from God as follows:

Usman: Be patient with the Father. Because in fact Dad, you lost God, if you got God. But I am

in reality Father in a manner,

In the play he wrote: "Deficiency Illness : Jahilci Ciwo," he attempted to show how religion has

a profound impact on the modern life of a Muslim in relation to the marriage law and its other

words in the same way. :

The second edition in the play continues to show the Islamic teachings about marriage, just as

the law ordered haram.

As many scholars have contributed to Hindu religion, most of them follow Islam, so their culture

and culture are all in the way of religion. Prayer, a person starts to make or encourage a teacher

to pray for something he is looking for. So in his play entitled "Mental Illness : Mutuwar

Zuciya," the second edition shows the attitude of politicians eg

Political Importance and Its Impact for Climate Change. The English language or the Hausa

language are the most influential people and people in all aspects of life for progress and

welcome and development when it comes to them. Because politics are important to the well-

being of the Hausa people, both through leadership and entrepreneurship and other important

16
things in everyday life, it is a source of public interest when it comes to working together, This is

happening just before the arrival of immigrants in Hausa. Politics that have a bearing on the

Hausa-based history of evolution and the evolution of the Hausa people have taken into account

such an ancient era as the eloquence says "it is already modern" so modern politics has

expanded. The Hausa people enjoy civilization and leadership through leadership and other

living conditions. 3.9 plays that include Politics in the Wicked World Championships.

In this field of political authors, athletes who are actively studying their role in developing art

plays a role in providing public awareness, especially for ordinary and small politicians, about

what is going on in the field of business. political and political elections in his play entitled

'Death of the Heart' : Mutuwar Zuciya, in the second episode :Continuing its involvement in

learning and promoting public participation in your plays gives you a great deal of confidence in

the politics of the politicians after the election is over, a sun entered their office as follows:

He is one of his best contributors to the public when they are in danger of getting out of the way

as if he were in the hands of such leaders in his play. The death of the heart in the seventh verse

is as follows:

Many scholars have contributed to language and literary developments and appreciation of such

Hausa arts. An example is Adam, MT, (1997: 16), who said: "Hausa are a people who are very

passionate about their traditional culture, especially in clothing, food and related things, marriage

or birth or death and business relations between relatives and friends and leaders, and business or

business or education and so forth ". He added that Adam, M.T (1997: 16), "Most Hausa people

are Muslims, so most of them, including their marriage, death and death all rely on religion. The

only thing that is never lost is from traditional culture, especially in the Maguzanwa. In dealing

with parents or relatives or friends or leaders or neighbors or any of these "is usually Islam.

Business, commerce, and education all over the Islamic world are based. "Based on what kind of

19
contributions people give about Hausawa culture, we can say that they are civilized people.

knowingly before they came to Europe but then after they are still one of the so-called non-

traditional communities they have taken into account the influence of contemporary culture that

has taken place in the culture. As a result of the change in modern times, the speakers say: "The

cheapest thing is to get what you get, so go back to it" or "the truck does not cover the glass". 4.3

plays Included in the World Wircliffe plays. In Hausawa, especially in marriage, it is important

to know the origin of their family and even if it does not know whether a marriage seeker is born

or whether or not their children are not able to do so in the play. 'Anyone leaving home ... in the

first place' is very important. When Aisha was looking for where the origin of the city and their

parents came out, they came to the city of Kaduna in the city where they were born, but they did

not know the origin of their homeland.

The sixth edition of this play shows the Hausa culture and how people from rural areas came into

cities to stay healthy and then lose their identity and to explain to their children who was one of

the He plays the play 'Everybody goes home ...': Kowar yar bagida".

In his play entitled "Man except God": Mutum Sai Allah", you have been asked how to seek

money or credit for people living outside or one-third or even one-on-one, in the fourth edition.
