Due date for project - 9/6/19​ - The drawings will be turned in to me in class. You may do all of
your drawings on LINED paper. Cornell Notes will be sent over GoogleDocs by 5:00PM on the
9/6/19.

The purpose of the summer reading assignment is to help students further develop the
reading skills they have practiced during the school year. if you have questions about

● Send me TWO GoogleDocs with your Cornell Notes through your gmail account,
one for EACH novel, with ALL chapters in the novel. Please send to my new
school email address:

● For EACH GoogleDoc, type your first and last name, and the name of the
NOVEL. (Example: Herbie Student 8,​ The Adventures of Robin Hood​)

For EACH​ SET​ of chapters, you must create a SET of CORNELL NOTES. These are the
NOTES we did for the Outside Novel Project during the third trimester, For EACH set of
chapters, you will answer the FOUR QUESTIONS below. The chapter sets are on page 3.

1. DECISIONS WITH PURPOSE: What major decisions do the characters make, and
why? Would you consider their choices responsible? Why or why not?
2.CONFLICTS/OBSTACLES/CHALLENGES:What conflicts, obstacles, or challenges
do the characters face, and how do they deal with them?
3. LESSONS/INSIGHTS/MESSAGES: What lessons do any of the characters learn
about themselves, about EACH other, or about life?What do WE learn?
4. CAUSES AND EFFECTS: What events/actions have major effects on characters?
How do the characters react?

Option #2 - DRAWINGS
For EACH​ SET​ of chapters, you must DRAW two pictures and write a two or three sentence
SUMMARY Please avoid using stick figures if you can, as I will be putting up some of your
drawings in my classroom in August.

SET #1

“A Scandal in Bohemia”

Choose TWO important characters and do a drawing for EACH one. Describe EACH character
in THREE to SEVEN sentences.

SET #2

“The Redheaded League”

Draw a comic strip of two of the scenes in this chapter in which the characters have a
conversation. I have included two videos on drawing comic strips on my webpage:

SET #3

“The Adventures of the Blue Carbuncle”

Choose two scenes that talk about important ACTIONS the characters perform and draw them.
Write a short summary of EACH scene at the bottom.

SET #4

“The Adventure of the Speckled Band”

Follow the same instructions as for Set #2

SET #5

“The Greek Interpreter” and “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons”

Choose any two scenes in the chapter to DRAW. You must give me a six to seven sentence
summary of EACH scene.

(You may choose OPTION #1 or OPTION #2)
SET #1

Chapters 1 - 3

Draw the SETTING of the story and write four or five sentences describing the SETTING.
Draw who you think the MAIN CHARACTER might be. Describe that character in a paragraph.

SET #2

Chapters 4- 7

Choose two scenes in which the MAIN CHARACTER makes important DECISIONS and draw
them. I will need a four to five sentence summary for EACH drawing at the bottom.

SET #3

Chapters 8-11

Choose two scenes in which the MAIN CHARACTER faces important CHALLENGES or
OBSTACLES to solving their PROBLEM or ACCOMPLISHING their goal and draw them.
Write a FOUR to FIVE sentence summary for EACH drawing at the bottom of the drawing.

SET #4

Chapters 12 - 15

Follow the same instructions as SET #3

SET #5

Chapters 16 -19

Choose the scene that is the most exciting scene in this section and DRAW the scene.
At the BOTTOM of the picture, write FOUR or SEVEN sentences telling me the SETTING of the
scene.
