Would you like to have SIMATIC® STEP 7 available on all your engineering workstations to
simplify your work processes, even though you do not need to use STEP 7 simultaneously on
every device? If so, the new license concept will offer you significant opportunities to make
savings: In corporate networks it is no longer the number of installations that is the decisive
factor, but the number of users who are working with STEP 7 at any one time.
STEP 7 V5.3 enables you to save even more: for example, by integrating the configuration of
fault-tolerant SIMATIC systems and programming via the Ethernet without any additional
communications software. To reduce your engineering expenditure, new functions have also
been implemented in STEP 7 V5.3, such as the direct requesting of information from our
Product Support service on the Internet with a simple mouse click.

The new Floating License
The new license model offers con-
siderable potential savings to users
who have installed STEP 7 on a
number of devices: In corporate
networks it is no longer the num-
ber of installations that is the deci-
sive factor, but the number of users
who are working with STEP 7 at
any one time.
This means you can install STEP 7
on any number of programming
devices or PCs within a company
(license holder), without having to
obtain a separate license for each
of these devices. The number of
licenses required is based on the
number of users who will be work-
ing with STEP 7 simultaneously.
The licenses are managed from a
central location with the Automation
License Manager which is included
with the software. This new license
regulation, called a “Floating
License”, meets the wishes of
many users and is also being in-
troduced step by step for other
SIMATIC Engineering Tools.
Examples of Floating License
applications
One example: In your company
you have installed STEP 7 on 10
engineering workstations in the
office or laboratory. You know that
no more than seven employees will
be working with STEP 7 at any one
time. In this case, seven Floating
Licenses will be sufficient. The
license is assigned by the Automation
License Manager to the workstation/
programming device currently in use.
The new license model has addition-
al advantages for service use. As

signed temporarily to mobile pro-
gramming devices such as SIMATIC
Field PGs, you do not have to ac-
quire any additional STEP 7 licenses.
Trial License for evaluation
purposes
In addition to the Floating License,
there is now a Trial License for
STEP 7 which allows you to try out
the original software for a period
of two weeks.
Integrated configuration for
fault-tolerant systems
Users of fault-tolerant SIMATIC con-
trollers, known as H-systems, will
no longer require optional software
in future. Now with Version 5.3,
STEP 7 provides the appropriate
functionality, resulting in savings
when H-systems are used.
Programming possible via
Industrial Ethernet
You can now program and test
your SIMATIC controllers via the
Industrial Ethernet as well, without
having to install additional com-
munications software on your
programming devices/PCs. It does
not matter whether the CPU has
an integral Ethernet interface

have to purchase as many licenses as
will be in use at any one time.

STEP 7 provides the opportunity to
access the Internet direct from the
hardware configuration in order to
retrieve the latest information on
the relevant module. New hardware
components can even be entered in
the hardware catalog via the Internet
without having to install a service
pack. These functions are now
being extended.
You can now also access the fre-
quently asked questions (FAQs) of
the selected SIMATIC component
with a single click. In this way you
can access the relevant information
provided by our Internet Product
Support service without any time-
consuming searches or browsing.
