The guidelines described in this document have been established so that thesis can be
prepared in a form suitable for library cataloging. The document takes its place in the library
as a product of original thinking and research, and it is, therefore, designed to appear in a
form comparable to published works.
This document covers the general rules of quality, format and appearance. Students
should consult their Project Supervisor for specific content requirements.
It is the student’s responsibility to read and follow the requirements presented here.
The final copies will not be accepted if they do not fulfil the criteria described below.
1 ORIGINALITY
The dissertation shall report, in an organized and scholarly fashion, an account of
original research work of the research scholar leading to the discovery of new facts or
techniques or correlation of facts already known (analytical, experimental, hardware oriented
etc.) and demonstrating a quality as to make a definite contribution to the advancement of
knowledge.
3 LANGUAGE
The dissertation or thesis must be written in English (either UK or USA).
4 SIZE OF DISSETATION
The written text of dissertation shall be not less than 50 pages and shall not exceed
150 pages excluding references, tables, questionnaires and other annexure.
6 FONT
Any legible font, except script, italic, or ornamental fonts, is acceptable for the body
of the text. The chosen font should be used throughout. Standard font size for text is 12 (no
font smaller than 10 will be accepted). Smaller font size may be appropriate for footnotes or
other material outside of the main text. Italics may be used for quotations and words in a

foreign language. Arial, Times New Roman, Helvetica and Century Gothic are
recommended.
7 SPACING
Document must be double-spaced with the exception of quotations as paragraphs,
captions, lists, graphs, charts, footnotes/endnotes, bibliographic entries, items within tables,
and lists in appendices.
10 PREPARATION OF DISSERTATION
In the preparation of the manuscript, care should be taken to ensure that all textual
matter is typewritten to the extent possible in the same format as may be required for the final
dissertation.
10.1 Cover page or Title page: A specimen copy of the cover page & title page for thesis
are given in Annexure I.
10.2 Bonafide certificate: The Bonafide Certificate shall be in double line spacing using
Page 3 of 12
Font Style Times New Roman font Size 14, as per the format shown in Annexure II.
10.3 Declaration certificate: The declaration Certificate shall be in double line spacing
using Font Style Times New Roman font Size 14, as per the format shown in Annexure
III.
10.5 Dedication: The dedication page is not required and can contain whatever text that you
would like to include. Text on this page needs to be in English.
10.6 Abstract: An abstract (summary) of the thesis of no more than 300 words shall be
bound in immediately after the “Acknowledgements page”. The abstract should state
the problem, describe the methods and procedures used, and give the main results and
conclusions.
10.7 Table of contents: As a page heading, use “TABLE OF CONTENTS” in all capital
letters and centered on the page. The table of contents shall immediately follow the
abstract. It shall list in sequence, with page numbers, all relevant subdivisions of the
thesis, including the titles of chapters, sections and subsections (up to 3 level), as
appropriate; the list of references (if any); the bibliography; the list of abbreviations and
other functional parts of the whole thesis; any appendices; the index (if provided). A
specimen copy of the Table of Contents for thesis is given in Annexure IV.
10.8 List of tables / figures / equations: As a page heading, use “LIST OF FIGURES,”
“LIST OF TABLES” or “LIST OF EQUATIONS” in all capital letters, centered on the
page. There should be separate pages for each list as above even if there is only one
example of each. The list should use exactly the same captions as they appear above the
tables and equations, below the figure, in the text. The typing matters under this
heading given in Annexure V, VI and VII.
10.9 List of symbols, abbreviation and nomenclature: The typing matters under this
heading given in Annexure VIII.
10.10 Chapters: The chapters should be divided as shown in section 7 of number 10. Each
chapter may be further divided into several divisions and sub-divisions. Each chapter
should be given an appropriate title.
• Tables and figures in a chapter should be placed in the immediate vicinity of
the reference from where they are citied.
• Footnotes should be used sparingly. They should be typed single space and
placed directly underneath in the very same page, which refers to the material
they annotate.
The format for typing Chapter headings, Divisions headings and sub-division headings
are explained through the following illustrative example.
Chapter heading: CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Division heading: 1.1 ABCD
Sub-division heading: 1.1.1 XYZ
Sub-sub-division heading: 1.1.1.1 PQRST
The word CHAPTER without punctuation should be centered top of the page. Two
spaces below, the title of the chapter should be typed centrally in capital letters. The
division and sub-division captions along with their numbering should be left-justified.
For more detail refer Annexure IX.
10.11 List of references: Any works of other researchers, if used either directly or indirectly,
the origin of the material thus referred to an appropriate places in the thesis should be
indicated. All references must be cited in the text by the reference number using
superscripts in square bracket e.g. if it single [1], if it is two [2,4], if it is more than two
continuous [3-5].
The reference material should be listed in the numeric order as appeared in the text. A
typical illustrative list given below relates to the citation example quoted above.

10.12 Appendices: As a page heading, use “APPENDIX” in all capital letters, centered on
the page. Appendices are provided to give supplementary information, which if
included in the main text may serve as a distraction and could be the central theme
under discussion. Appendices should be numbered using Arabic numerals, e.g.
Appendix I, Appendix II, etc.
11 NUMBERING INSTRUCTION
11.1 Page numbering: All page numbers (whether it is in Roman or Arabic numbers)
should be typed without punctuation on the bottom right hand corner with the last digit
in line with the right hand margin. The preliminary pages of the thesis (such as Title
page, Acknowledgement, Table of Contents etc.) should be numbered in lower case
Roman numerals (e.g. i, ii, iii, etc.). The title page will be numbered as (i) but this
should not be typed. The page immediately following the title page shall be numbered
(ii) and it should appear at the bottom right hand corner as already specified. Pages of
main text, starting with Chapter1 should be consecutively numbered using Arabic
numerals (e.g. 1,2,3, etc.).
11.3 Numbering of tables, figures and equation: Tables, figures and equations appearing
anywhere in the dissertation should bear appropriate numbers. The rule for assigning
such numbers is illustrated through an example. Thus, if a figure / table / equation in
Chapter 2 happen to be the fourth then assign 2.4 to that figure / table / equation. If
figures (or tables or equation) appear in appendices then figure 2 in Annexure II will be
designated as Figure II.2. The top line of the table continued into the next page should,
for example read Table 2.1 (continued) placed centrally and underlined.
