8 Group Project (20 Mark)

Topic:
(1) Compare the general design basis, including the design for
action effects (bending, axial load, shear and torsion), in
Eurocode 2 and ACI Building Code. Illustrate the difference
between the codes with an example on one of the action

effects.

(2) Explain the implications and evaluate the consequences of

using: (a) fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars in place of
conventional steel as reinforcement; or (b) high-performance
concrete (e.g. high-strength concrete, fibre-reinforced concrete)
in place
低 of conventional concrete; on the general design
philosophy, as well as flexural and shear design requirements of
structural concrete members.
13
8 Group Project (20 Mark)
(3) Discuss in general the techniques related to materials,
design and construction that may be used to control
deflections and cracking in structural concrete members.
Choose a particular method (e.g. crack control using discrete
fibers) and explain analytically how the method works.

(4) Consider any one structural concrete member, preferably

one that you have designed in practice (e.g., a transfer
girder, a stepped beam). Design the member using an
appropriate truss model (including strut-and-tie method)
and compare
低 the results with those that you had obtained
by other means such as empirical methods or computer
software. 14
8 Group Project (20 Mark)

Assessment
1) All the students are divided into five groups, and
return the name list of students in each group before
the end of this lesson.
2) Report

60% of 20 =12 Mark
Presentation on April 5th
40% of 20=8 Mark
3) Do not copy directly from available literature.
Grading will be based on:
(A) Originality
低 & Difficulty Level
(B) Approach to the Problem & Coverage
(C) Organization & Presentation 15
