Abstract

The following body of work will depict what I plan on achieving in my next five years when it

comes to professional growth in my chosen field. This paper will give examples of how I can

continue to grow in education. I will research some of the options there are for me both inside

my district and beyond that can help me achieve my desired goals.

In every profession it is important to grow and to continue to expand our ideas and

thought process. Education is constantly evolving and changing, new methods to reach learners

are rapidly being created and it is our responsibility to continue to grow with those ideas. The

way people are learning is changing and we as teachers need to keep up and continue to find

ways to reach every student who comes through our classroom. Learning never ends and you

shouldn’t want it to. I have created an outline for what my plan will be for the next five years of

my life in a professional manner.

Year One

Currently I have just finished my first year of teaching as an intern. I taught high school physical

education this year at a title one school. It was a year that brought on many learning experiences

that I am extremely grateful for. I was fortunate enough to have the internship count as my

student teaching. While I was going through this year I was also finishing my credential/masters

program and coaching college softball. I am currently finishing my last masters class and my

final TPA for my credential. My goal is to finish those two by the end of this month. I am also in

the process of interview for teaching jobs and am hoping to land myself at a school that I can

really grow at and have the opportunity to become an established teacher.

Year Two

During year 2 I will begin to clear my credential, I will be completely finished with my dual

credential in physical education and health and will also have a masters in education. At the

moment I am working in the San Juan Unified School District, they have a two year program in

which they help teachers set goals and give them skills and opportunities to meet them (SJUSD).

When going through this program you have a site supervisor who helps you as well as someone

who comes out from the district to observe and to make sure you are completing the goals in

your individual learning plan. In this first year of clearing my credential I will also begin creating

my own professional portfolio. This is similar to the PDQP, it will be designed towards specific

tasks they ask you to write about along with producing evidence that goes with them. At the end

of year two of the program you will present your portfolio to a panel and they will review all that

you have accomplished to show that you are ready to move beyond a probationary status as a

teacher.

Year 3

During year three I will have moved to the second year of my two year teacher support

training. During this year I will be continuing building my professional portfolio also while

working on my contentious education hours. These hours can be completed by going to trainings,

seminars, taking classes, or doing individual studies and projects (SJUSD). By completing these

hours you are furthering your growth within education while also allowing yourself to move on

the pay scale. Our district does a wonderful job of notifying teacher when they have

opportunities to complete some of these hours within the district. My hope is that I am also still

coaching and growing myself in that field as well.

Year 4

At this point in my career I am hoping that I have now been at the same school site for a

few years and will have the opportunity to take on a stronger leadership role There are various

was that I can take a role of leadership, there is a department chair position, different site

committees, and various other committees that can be joined. I also hope that I can take on a

leadership role with coaching and will possibly taking on a head coaching role.

Year 5

Making it to year 5 will be a big milestone, at this point in my career my hope is to be

moved all the way over on the pay scale and then just continue to move down it as I continue to

teach. I decide to get my masters so that I had the opportunity to teach and coach in college. My

hope is that as I’ve reached year 5 that I may have an opportunity to start teaching night classes

at a community college or possibly have the opportunity to move completely over to the college

level. I will continue to participate in professional development and find ways to give back to my

school’s community and continue to grow as a leader in the community.
