Abstract

The study entitled “Effects of the growth in Pechay Plant in different kinds of water” was
conceived to help vegetable growers maximize their production in different kinds of water to use
in the growth of pechay plant. Specifically, this aimed to determine what kind of water can make
the Pechay Plant grow healthy and big by comparing the measurement development of each set-
up. The procedure includes the following: preparation for pechay seedling, seeding,
transplanting, application of mulches and data collection through observation.
There were 3 set-ups made. These include set-ups for tap water, mineral water and the last set-up
is the water from the faucet which is commonly used in our home.In each set-up, there were
three replicates. The following variables were controlled during the experiment: the type of pots,
type of soil, the amount of sunlight, the time of watering and the amount of water applied.
Observations were done every day. Visual/ocular observation on the growth of the plant was
done to determine the differences and effects of the water to the plant.
Based on the actual results of the study, the following conclusion is drawn:
The applications of different kinds of water, the effects of the water to the growth and
nourishmentof the plants. But the effect of the different kind of water to the growth of pechay
plants in this study did not arrive with a valid conclusion because of some intervening factors
like unpredictable weather changes and the presence of pechay diseases due to pest infestation.
The researchers acknowledge the weaknesses of the study made thus the following suggestions
are highly noted:

i
Introduction

A. Background of the Study

For almost three decades, farmers in the Philippines have been using chemical fertilizers,
pesticides and growth regulators in their crop production strategies. Despite the high cost of
these inputs, and the farmers’ awareness that they can adversely affect soil fertility, food quality,
human and animal health, and environmental quality; they are used extensively because there are
few alternatives that would be considered practical and feasible. One reason for this is that
university-based research has strongly promoted the use of agricultural chemicals as the best
means of achieving the highest possible crop yields. The predominant question then is how can
the farmers shift from a chemical-intensive agriculture to one that is based on the utilization of
natural systems, and still maintain their economic Viability. It is encouraging that there are some
efforts now underway by university researchers, the Philippine government, and the private
sector to develop nature farming as an alternative to chemical-based agriculture.

Philippines is the very tropical country. We can find here in the philippines many different
vegetables. One of them is pechay because pechay is just very easy to plant and we can harvest
this in just 45 days. There are many ways on how to plant this pechay. Either we plant this in the
farm or just in our house. So as a related concern of the faculty and staff of the school, they
decided to have a major research about pechay and it includes some questionable statement that
includes the aspect and probability of the pechay on how, what, why, when questions which
highly needs a study and a specific amount of time for the result. So the researchers gathered all
the materials and resources for the study and hoping for a successful outcome of the project. The
study is concern with the effects on the growth of the certain plant to the different kind of water
uses in the process.

2
B. Statement of the Problem
This study aims to investigate the effects of different variable will be used, compare the
effectiveness of each variable to the growth of the plant and its result that may vary to the results
of the study. The outcome of the study may conclude the effects of the variable to the plant,
measurement of its development and what variable that is useful in terms of nourishing a pechay
plant especially in farming that is the most common labor here in the Philippines because of its
tropical climate. The study will determine if the pechay is capable of using the different variable
in each set-up. In the road of the study they may be some conflicts that may affects the process
and cycle of the investigation. But as for the dedication of the team to successfully done the
project, we will hope for the good outcome and achieve the goal of the study to apply the best
and valid result of the experiment.

1. Is there a difference of growth in each set-up in which uses a different variable?

2. What is the rate of plant growth in terms of (a) height and (b) number of leaves of pechay
treated with the different kind of water?
3. Is there a significant difference between the different variable used in each set-up to the
growth rate of the plant?

Methodology

Materials
•30 pechay plant seedling
•Tap water
•Mineral water
•Water came from the faucet

Procedure
There are 3 set ups in this experiment. 1 set up is equal to 10 pechay plant. The set up 1, the
water we used is tap water. Set up 2 is mineral water. And set up 3 is the water came from the
faucet. We watered these 3 set ups during school days and observed it in 4 weeks. All the
extraneous variables like amount of water, sunlight, location and time of the experiment were
controlled. All the samples are mostly homogenous. The plants were grown until harvest time
after 4 weeks. The growth of pechay in three set ups are different.

4
Results

The table shows the results of growth of pechay plant in different kinds of water used in
the three set ups.

Discussions

In set up 1, 4 pechay plant alive by the used of tap water and 6 are dead after 4 weeks of
observation.
In set up 2 watered by mineral water, 5 pechay plants are alive and 5 are dead after 4
weeks of observation.
In set up 3 watered by the water came from the faucet, 7 pechay plants are alive and three
are dead after 4 weeks of observation
In the rate of plant growth in terms of height and number of pechay leaves, the tap water
has the lowest in terms of height and water from the faucet has the highest. In the number of
leaves, tap water has the 30% number of leaves of pechay plant while water came from the
faucet has the 50% number of leaves.

6
Conclusions

Based on the results, the researchers therefore conclude that there is a difference of
growth in each set-up which uses a different variable like set-up 1 is tap water, set-up 2 is
mineral water, and set-up 3 is water came from the faucet. In the rate of plant growth in terms of
height and number of pechay leaves, the tap water has the lowest in terms of height and water
from the faucet has the highest. In the number of leaves, tap water has the 30% number of leaves
of pechay plant while water came from the faucet has the 50% number of leaves. There is a
significant difference between the different variable we used in each set-up to the growth rate of
the plant.

7
Recommendations

The researchers recommend the next researcher to experiment/investigate more with the
effect of the growth of pechay plant in these different kinds of water, the tap water, the mineral
water and the water came from the faucet. And the location of your set-up should be away from
the plant-eating insects like the caterpillar and etc.
