ASSIGNMENT 2-JUSTIFICATION OF ARTIFACTS 1

Abstract

This assignment serves to justify the three artifacts chosen for Domain F:Developing as a

Professional Educator. Rationale is provided for the selection of each artifact; Artifact #1: Scope

and Sequence for 2019-2020, Artifact #2:Five Year Professional Development Plan, and Artifact

#3 Flyer for ELA/Literacy Leaders Network.

ASSIGNMENT 2-JUSTIFICATION OF ARTIFACTS 2

Artifact #1: Scope and Sequence for 2019-2020

The first artifact that I have chosen is evidence from my last professional development

workshop that I attended with the 7th grade English Language Arts team at Olive Peirce Middle

School. During this professional development opportunity, I was able to join and work with

secondary level teachers to review the English Language Arts standards, to analyze the ELA

anchor standards, and to write learning intentions and success criteria for each of the anchor

standards. Then, we were asked to work with our grade level teams to create a Scope and

Sequence for the 2019-2020 school year, in which we mapped out our school year indicating

which standards we would address and how we would address them using our new curriculum.

This was a professional development opportunity that was done through active learning, and one

in which I gained a lot of insight and understanding. Bates and Morgan (2018) state that “This

active learning element focuses on teachers’ learning within professional development sessions.

When learning is meaningful, teachers are more likely to engage with the content” (p. 622) This

artifact, shows the level of collaboration that occurred during this professional development

opportunity and my continued work with understanding and applying the English Language Arts

standards, which in turn help me become a more effective English Language Arts teacher.

Artifact #2: Five Year Professional Development Plan

My second artifact is my Five Year Professional Development Plan. I chose this artifact

because it shows my commitment to growing professionally over the next five years. This plan is

a guide that I will use to enhance my skills, so that I can increase my students’ learning in

English Language Arts. I am a visual learner so having my plan presented visually, helps me

keep track of where I am, and shows me where I am heading, as it relates to my professional

development. In addition, my professional development plan was created after a careful process

of creating professional development goals that serve to address my areas of need in Domain A:

Making Subject Matter Comprehensible. This professional development plan will help me

address my area of need, with professional development opportunities over the span of five

years. In addition, this plan will assist me in achieving both my short term goals and my long

term goals, as they pertain to attaining competency in Domain A of the Teacher Performance

Expectations.

Artifact #3 Flyer for ELA/Literacy Leaders Network

My last artifact is a flyer for the ELA/Literacy Leaders Network. Although this flyer is

from this current school year, I know that it will be offered in the 2019-2020 school year after

reaching out to the San Diego County Office of Education and inquiring. I plan to join the

ELA/Literacy Leaders Network to increase my effectiveness as a teacher by providing me with

expertise on literacy instruction. I also plan to work with a team of grade level content area

teachers at my site on this Leaders Network, in an effort to work collaboratively for the

enhancement of literacy instruction. Bates and Morgan (2018), state that, “Collaboration

ultimately allows a group to arrive at solutions through professional, evidence-based

conversations” (623). This is what I anticipate will happen with this team of educators as we

work together to help our struggling readers access complex grade level text. Literacy instruction

is one of my professional development goals, so forming part of this leadership network in San

Diego, brings me one step closer to promoting quality literacy development at the secondary

level.
