SECTION I - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Kumasi Catholic Press is a Printing Press which also have attached to the press a book selling shop
which sells various books ranging from academic books, religious books and materials such as catholic
ropes and artefacts (rosary, wafer/host etc.). The printing press started as a charity organisation raising
income for charity. The press is into printing of Business cards; exercise books, funeral posters, funeral
and wedding invitations etc.

Kumasi Catholic Press seeks to offer its customers a set of services that effectively manages their
image, focusing on quality and customization. Kumasi Catholic Press strives to gain a competitive
advantage by further enforcing its brand image and association with top quality products.
Kumasi Catholic Press plans to extend the product offering to include commercial services such as
printing of schools examination and educational documents and other stationary, hospitals cards and
folders, lamination of cards, Institutional ID cards design and printing, printing of churches tithe cards
and various stationary items, commercial sales and distribution of Communion wines and wafe/host.
These additions will differentiate Kumasi Catholic Press from its competitors and other print shops
which will become competitors as it strives to become a "one stop shop" for all image management
needs.

We hope to offer the best prices within the printing industry in the region. KCP also aspire to be the
employer of choice in the Printing industry within the region and beyond.

SECTION II - BUSINESS HISTORY, BACKGROUND, AND OBJECTIVES

 The press was initially formed as an evangelical department of the church where evangelical
materials was printed for evangelism and later commercialise to raise funds for charity.

 In the short term we would like to refurbish the press and book shop with new printing
machines to improve the quality of printouts offered to our clients and is able to venture into
modern areas within the printing industry. We would also want to introduce an internet café
which will offer competitive internet services to clients and potential future clients. In the long
term we hope to be the Press of choice in the region for various printing in the region.

 The Press has over the years been able to take up some printing jobs for some catholic churches
in the region as well as offering printing services to other organisations within the region.
However the Press has had various challenges ranging from funding and high cost of
maintaining obsolete machines used for printing. The press has also had challenges with power
in the absence of power from the national grid.

 The Press was initially funded from offerings from the diocese and since then has been funded
from miga income generated from the Press and Book shop.

 Over the years the press has improved in structure with the addition of a book shop which buys
and sells various books and stationary. The Leadership of the diocese has since seen the
AUTHOR: DANIEL AFEDZI 02439224920 4
potential of the Press as a huge income generating venture which can enhance the churches
evangelism and other future projects as well.

SECTION III - BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Overtime lack of funding has rendered a lot of the printing machines old and making maintenance cost
very high and resulting in the press not able to break even and re-invest. The National power challenge
has also had an influence on the press as it is unable to function without power from the National
greed. Inability to offer competitive pricing for prospective clients has also affected our ability to
attract more customers to do business with us. The press has not been able to attract experts in the
printing market as we have not been able to offer competitive remuneration to motivate them to choose
us over other printing press

SECTION V - PRESENT MARKET

We are currently serving catholic churches in the region and its environs. We are located around the
centre of the Kumasi municipality and with very good advertisement of the press as well as good
sustainable funding must be able to capture the market in the environ and beyond. Our target
customers include churches, schools, financial institutions, hospitals etc.

The press has the potential to be in charge of the prints and stationary of all Catholic churches and
schools and catholic organisations within the region and its environs. We also have the potential of
being the printing press of choice for the various churches and organisations in the regions and
beyond.

AUTHOR: DANIEL AFEDZI 02439224920 5

We hope to market the Press through announcements during church services in the various churches
within the region and its environs. We also hope to advertise in the short term with small fliers
describing our services and possibly other juicy offers we would have for potential clients

Some of our major customers include churches, schools, and financial institutions regular customers
from the region and beyond.

 Our proposed marketing approach will be to print and distribute small fliers to be distributed in
the churches in the region and its environs.
 We also hope to distribute the fliers in the entrance and exits of shops in Kumasi and its
environs.
 We also hope to market the press through announcements in all catholic churches in Kumasi

SECTION VI – COMPETITION

The Kumasi Catholic have identified a number of micro printing press around Asafo, Adum and its
environs and seem to offer competitive pricing and also seem to be more in touch with the populace
and competes very well for the market. However we see the Catholic Press to be having more potential
than them to lead in the market. We have the Catholic churches and schools to our disposal and a good
advert will capture that market and once we are able to do a good job we can get the church members
to advertise us to the populace and that will enable us grow our capital in real time and expand.

Advantages and disadvantages our company have as compared with our primary competitors

We have a lot of advantages as compared to our competitors as we already have the seed market in the
church members. We have the churches and Catholic schools in Kumasi and its environs to capitalise
on. The disadvantage we have seemed to be that our competitors are closely in touch with the market
of the populace than us which can be worked on with a good approach to marketing.

SECTION VII - MARKETING PLAN

The customers and geographic territory to be targeted for marketing efforts to generate
Revenue.

The geographical territory to be targeted for the market efforts include churches and schools in
communities like Adum and its environ, Tafo, Ejisu, Probon, Asienimpong, Kotwi, Ahenema
Kokobin, Atwima Boko Owabi, Ntri Boahung, Kodee, Nerebehi, Toase etc.

SECTION VIII - MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION

Represented in the organogram shown below is the management structure of the Press.

Our proposition for the Management team is to employ people with the right competence for the right
job to make us more competitive in the market. In that regard we either need to employ a person with
very high experience in Human Resource management or train the current Human Resources. We also
need to get a person who is highly qualified and experience in Designing and Printing. There is also a
possibility of retraining the Designers we have to be more qualified for the competition. By so doing
our design quality and printing will improve and we will be on our way to being the market leader. Our
preference is to employ a ready-made staff with the expertise as it is more expensive to train new staff
and we are also unsure if they will stay after spending money to retrain(educate). We also don’t have
the luxury of time to retrain/educate.

REMUNERATION

It is also our desire that we will have a very highly motivating remuneration scheme which will be
good enough to retain the staff we have and also help us in our quest to poaching very good staff. We
need to ensure we are able to have a good pension scheme for our workers. Having a good pension
scheme will go a long way to make our staff see a good future in working with us. Having a good
remuneration scheme will also go a long way to help prevent fraud and theft as well motivated staff is
not likely to find enough motivation and justification to steal or commit fraud.

Quality control procedures

Quality control is more and more, assuming a greater importance in the printing industry.

AUTHOR: DANIEL AFEDZI 02439224920 15

Controlling the quality of all sorts of digital prints using non standardized inks or media imposed the
invention of a new process. A digital printer is not always used to stimulate the colours of a traditional
printing press, but we need to control its print quality. Traditional print technologies such as
flexography, and more generally all traditional presses used with special inks or support also required
such a new process.

To solve the persistent problem of colour proofs control by their Producers and users:

Only a double control by the producer and user, as done for any other industrial process, makes it
possible to optimise production flows. The new process makes any user able to control if a digital
proof conforms to its specifications, even if he has no expertise.

The accurate and universal colour management methods proposed by I.C.C., the falling price of
measuring instruments and associated software, the proliferation of excellent Postscript Rips properly
using I.C.C. profiles, and the growing number of excellent print engines, are such that we should no
longer hear about any “colour proofing problems” since many years.

But the main pending problem was controlling all these colour proofs. Print houses are still obliged
today to carry out many in-house proofs, by not being made able to control by a bullet-proof process
most of the proofs they receive.

VISUAL VALUATION OF PRINTED MATTER is very important:

1 It takes into account great quantity of elements at the same time (register, colour, distortion elements,
etc.).
2 It is also extremely sensitive to minimum chromatic and tonal variation.
3 It values immediately the most important print characteristics: evident out register and frequent
“uncleans" give an unacceptable reproduction.
4 The consumer judges the print prevalently with visual standard.
If so, what is the densitometer used for?
The densitometer is very useful. If you can measure ink, densities,
Dot Gain, Trapping, Print Contrast, you can control them.

INSTRUMENTAL VALUATION using a densitometer

1. Our eyes even when "good" are different; everyone sees the colours in his own way, they
cannot be standardized or calibrated like the densitometer.
2. The eye is influenced by a bright source present in the observation place (more hot, more
cold): this is the phenomenon of metamerism.
The densitometer has a standard light built in and it is not effected by this problem.
3. We know if a print is "too much yellow", but we don't succeed in quantifying it numerically.
Densitometry gives us values to standardize our production, to uncover when there are some
problems or where they come from (if by print or photolithography), to dispose irrefutable
subjects when the customer is not totally satisfied of the final result.
4. The man has not its own memory of colour as the densitometer: it is possible, instead of
recording information, to file and use it again after a long time, if it is useful (let's think the
reprinting).

AUTHOR: DANIEL AFEDZI 02439224920 16

Conclusion

It is not enough to value a print in a visual way only or utilizing exclusively densitometric techniques.

A good judgment of the level of print quality can be only the result of matching these two experiences.

Availability of Skill Labour

The Press needs a lot of skilled labour to assist in the use of modern machines and recommend modern
Press machines and assist new labour in the use of the machines. The press also needs highly qualified
staff with modern ideas to printing and modern measurement of quality control etc.

The Following skills will be greatly required for management of the press

1) Operation Monitoring -- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure the machines are
working properly.

2) Quality Control Analysis -- Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to
evaluate quality or performance.

3) Operation and Control -- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.

4) Reading Comprehension -- Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related

documents.

5) Monitoring -- Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to

make improvements or take corrective action.

6) Active Listening -- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand
the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

7) Critical Thinking -- Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of
alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

8) Complex Problem Solving -- Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to
develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

9) Judgment and Decision Making -- Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions
to choose the most appropriate one.

10) Time Management -- Managing one's own time and the time of others.

SECTION X - FINANCIAL PLAN/DATA

Below is the Press’s sales and profit trends.

We hope to by this business plan raise additional capital to expand the press to meet current and future
needs of the market.

We hope to raise capital through

1. Funds from the Dioceses (investments/recapitalisation). With the ambition of the press to go
modern there is the need to upgrade and also introduce modern Press machines to improve both
the quality and quantity of work the Press can do. There is also the need to introduce new
machines which will help us enter new areas in the press business which will make us the press
of choice.
2. Funds from profits will be reinvested after we are able to revamp the press to modern standard
3. We are also considering taking up bank loans if the need be to help in the purchase of new
machines for the press. However our preference is that considering that bank loans will attract
interest not less than 32% per annum we will prefer the diocese to fund the purchase of new
machines and also repair old functional machines.
