Abstract

In St. Paul University Iloilo, some senior high school students are one of the

victims of bullying at school. For this, some senior high school student experience

loneliness, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety attack that affects their physical

and emotional behavior and academic performance. We decided to conduct this study

“Bullying as experienced by Paulinian students a phenomenological study” because we

want to help those self-deprecating students to break the stigma and seclusion of

bullying by letting our voice be heard. This study would like to determine the bullying

experiences of Paulinian students. Specifically this study will seek the following

questions, how do the informants cope after the experience and what is the effect of

bullying among the Paulinian students. This research will cater two (2) Paulinian

students who will serve as informants.

This study is Phenomenological in nature. This study will cater two (2) informants

who are senior high school student of St. Paul University Iloilo. This study will make use

of questionnaire with interview.

The purpose of this study is to find out the Bullying Experienced by Paulinian

students. The present study design was qualitative and a phenomenological approach

was utilized, conducted last April 6, 2019. It is concluded that Paulinian students, both

male and female informants also experience bullying in any forms of aspects. Moreover,

it is also concluded that in the physical aspect, both female and male informants usually

experience the form of bullying in verbal behavior. According to Placidius (2013) found

that physical bullying was perceived as a dominant bullying element. In the emotional
v

aspect, it is concluded that both male and female informants do not feel secured in

school. It is concluded that the social aspect is the most common reason of bullying.

The male and female informants often loose self-esteem, start having trouble in school,

and withdraw from friends and activities. Bullying occurs in any time and it has negative

impacts mainly on students’ academic, emotional and social development during school

period (Kartal & Asude, 2009). Alison (2016) stated that bullying is considered as global

problem that affect emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of student worldwide. As a

whole, it is concluded that both male and female informants had the same experiences

when classified according to physical, emotional, social, and mental aspect. On the

basis of the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are

manifested. The study found that physical bullying is dominant elements of bullying

therefore the researches of this study recommend the students to be alert and vigilant to

avoid bullying. Students are advised not to tolerate such demeaning acts and to report

immediately to school administration. School premises should implement a program that

would check the social and emotional stability of students who had been bullied.

Parents should be more open to their children and help them build their confidence to

open up their insecurities in their teen years and ask for professional advice. Educators

of other universities should conduct this study because it would help them to raise

awareness of the global problem bullying has brought to every universities.
