COMPARATIVE and SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

We use these forms when we talk about people or things.

1. We add (-ER) (-EST) to these adjectives:


calm full long poor short tall
clean great new proud small warm
cold hard old quiet smart young
cool

2. We add a letter and (-ER) (-EST)to these adjectives:


big fat hot sad thin wet

3. We change y to i to these adjectives and then (-ER) (-EST):


angry dry foggy heavy pretty windy
busy early friendly hungry sunny
cloudy easy funny lucky thirsty
dirty empty happy noisy ugly

4. We add (-R) (-ST) to these adjectives:


handsome large late little nice

5.We use (MORE) (THE MOST) with these adjectives:

afraid careful excited important terrible unlucky


awful clever exciting intelligent tired unpopular
beautiful delicious expensive interesting unfriendly wonderful
boring difficult helpful popular unhappy worried

6. Good and bad have irregular comparative forms

Laura 's pictures are good.


Gail pictures’ are better than Laura 's pictures.
Gail pictures are the best

Ken 's grades are bad


Dave 's grades are worse than Ken's grades.
Dave’s grades are the worst
