2 Overview

2.1 Feature Introduction

A radio channel can be shared by multiple TBFs during PS traffic transfer. These TBFs
may be busy or idle depending on the actual services being transferred. The system
determines the status of a TBF (idle or active) by checking whether any data traffic exists
within the TBF. The system combines active TBFs during TBF multiplexing. By ignoring
idle TBFs without data traffic, the system supports the multiplexing of more TBFs. If IM
services (such as QQ) are transferred and small amounts of traffic are generated, the
corresponding TBFs can be combined to improve the utilization of network resources.

3 Technical Description
The system reads the status of an uplink or downlink TBF periodically and uses a filtering
method to determine whether the TBF is active or idle. If the TBF status changes, the
system updates the number of active uplink and downlink users of the slot. A TBF is
regarded as an active TBF if data transfer is detected within the TBF. Otherwise, the TBF
is regarded as an idle TBF. The following formula is used to calculate the dynamic TBF
value (Mtbf) of a user:

Mtbf(t) = (1-e)Mtbf(t-1) + eItbf

The letter e is a forgetting factor. The value range is 0–1.

Itbf (0 or 1) indicates the TBF status. If the TBF is active, the value is 1. If the
TBF is idle, the value is 0. The initial value of Mtbf is 1.

Because the system processing unit does not support decimals, the formula can be
converted into:

Mtbf(t) = (100-e)Mtbf(t-1)/100 + eItbf

The letter e is a forgetting factor. The value range is 0–100.

Itbf (0 or 1) indicates the TBF status. If the TBF is active, the value is 1. If the
TBF is idle, the value is 0. The initial value of Mtbf is 100.

If the calculated value of Mtbf is greater than the preset value, the TBF is regarded as an
active TBF. Otherwise, the TBF is regarded as an idle TBF.

5 Related Counters and Alarms

This feature has no related counter.

5.1 Related Alarms

This feature has no related alarm.

6 Engineering Guide

6.1 Application Scenario

This feature can be used in a network with a large number of IM services to improve
resource utilization.

6.2 Feature Activation Procedure

In the configuration resource tree, select Modify Area > Managed Element > GSM
Logical Configuration > Cell Information Configuration > GPRS Configuration and
set SuppActTBF to Yes, see the following figure.

6.3 Feature Validation Procedure

Test Item Flexible TBF multiplexing

Prerequisite 1. The communication between the BSC and the EMS is

normal.
2. The site is operating properly.
3. The iBSC is operating properly.
4. The CN is operating properly.
5. The mobile phones used for the test are available.

Steps 1. Use GPRS services on multiple mobile phones at the

same time. Use Web browsing services on some mobile
phones and IM services (such as QQ) on the other
mobile phones.
2. Use the QQ service on more mobile phones and check
whether the Web browsing services on the other mobile
phones are affected.
3. On the GPRS Configuration tab, set the SuppActTBF
parameter to Yes and use the default values of the
other parameters.

Test Item Flexible TBF multiplexing

4. Repeat Step 1 and Step 2.

Expected Result 1. In Step 1, the PS service on each mobile phone is

normal.
2. In Step 2, the Web browsing services are affected
because the QQ service is used on more mobile
phones.
3. In Step 4, the effect on Web browsing services is
reduced after the flexible TBF multiplexing feature is
enabled. The user experience with PS services is
improved.

6.4 Feature Deactivation Procedure

In the configuration resource tree, select Modify Area > Managed Element > GSM
Logical Configuration > Cell Information Configuration > GPRS Configuration and
set SuppActTBF to No, see the following figure.
