ELECTROPLATING (FOR CORROSION PREVENTION, RUST
D 2003- 05
PREVENTION AND DECORATION)
B REV6

1. SCOPE
This standard specifies the electroplating (*1) (hereinafter referred to as "plating") to be performed on
parts for purposes of corrosion prevention, rust prevention, and decoration.
Note (*1) Functional plating, to be performed for wear prevention, is excluded.
Remarks: Inclusion of hexavalent chromium in the coating shall be prohibited beginning on December
31, 2005.
However, the above deadline may be changed in accordance with the action plan of each region and
business, if required by the characteristics of the region and business, provided that the measures will
have been completed six months prior to the implementation date of the regulations.
The specific deadline shall be confirmed among the parties concerned.

2. TYPES
Plating shall be categorized as defined in Attached Table 1 according to the types of base, final plating,
and plating thickness (grade). Refer to HES A 3010 (INDICATION METHODS OF PLATING) for the
symbols of plating.
Remarks: Specific procedures for each plating shall be selected by agreement among the parties
concerned.

3. QUALITY
Plating quality shall be tested as specified in Section 5 (TESTS) and shall conform to the following
requirements. Plating of resin parts shall be separately inspected for cracks which may be caused by
deformation from use.
3.1 Appearance
a) Appearance of plating shall be tested in accordance with Section 5.1 (Appearance test) and shall
conform to the requirements in Attached Table 1. However, the portions that cannot be visually checked
after the product is completed shall be left to agreement among the parties concerned.
b) Those portions which are difficult to finish, such as corners, elevations and threads, and surfaces
which do not contact with a 12-mm diameter sphere need not to conform to the requirements in
Attached Table 1. However, these portions can be determined by agreement among the parties
concerned as required, by comparing them with a master sample.
c) The criteria for visual inspection shall conform to Attached Table 2 and the appearance grades shall
conform to HES D 0041 (APPEARANCE GRADES).
3.2 Corrosion Resistance
a) The corrosion resistance of plating shall be tested according to Section 5.3 (Corrosion Resistance
Test) and all portions to be plated shall conform to the requirements in Attached Table 1. Any portion
which is too difficult to be plated and does not satisfy the specified corrosion resistance requirements
(*2) shall be subjected to design engineering review or alternative means of corrosion prevention and
rust prevention treatments, such as coating, in order to satisfy the requirements. The portions shall be
agreed upon among the parties concerned when it is not too difficult to be plated and corrosion and rust
prevention surface treatments are applied additionally after plating and where better quality than this
standard is required.

Note (*2) Corners, deep indentations, elevation, threads, satin surfaces, blinds, joints, etc.
b) The corrosion resistance criteria for the chrome-plating involving copper-acetate salt spray test
(hereinafter referred to as "CASS") and falling under appearance grade "d" shall have a rating number
one rank lower than the criteria for grades "sa" to "c."
c) The judgment criteria for the corrosion resistance test shall conform to Section 4.3.2 of HES D 6001.
3.3 Plating Thickness
a) The plating thickness shall be determined in accordance with 5.2 (Thickness Test), and the minimum
thickness of the plated portion shall conform to the requirements in Attached Table 1.
b) For checking the plating thickness, the parties concerned shall discuss and select the typical locations
on plated areas where plating quality can be controlled in order to satisfy the requirements of "a" in
Sections 3.2 and 3.3.
3.4 Adhesion
Plating shall be tested for adhesion in accordance with Section 5.4 (Adhesion Test), and shall conform
to the requirements in Attached Table 1.
3.5 Color Fastness
Plating shall be tested for discoloration in accordance with Section 5.5 (Color Fastness Test), and shall
conform to the requirements in Attached Table 1. However, the inspection shall be made only on
specific parts.
3.6 Others
For the surface of resin material part not required for the appearance test, electroplating may be omitted
by masking or other methods, if agreed upon among the parties concerned.

4. HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT PREVENTION

The treatment to prevent hydrogen embrittlement shall be carried out after plating as specified on the
relevant drawings in accordance with HES A 3032 (SPECIFICATION STANDARD OF HYDROGEN
EMBRITTLEMENT REMOVAL TREATMENT). Chromate treatment shall be carried out after
hydrogen embrittlement prevention treatment.

5. TESTS
5.1 Appearance Test
This test shall be performed in accordance with Section 4.1 of Visual Test in HES D 6001 (GENERAL
TEST METHODS FOR PLATING).
5.2 Thickness Test
This test shall be performed in accordance with Section 4.2 of Thickness Test in HES D 6001.

This test shall be performed in accordance with Section 4.3 of Corrosion Resistance Test in HES D
6001. However, test method shall conform to Attached Table 1 according to the types of plating.
5.4 Adhesion Test
This test shall be performed in accordance with Section 4.4 of Adhesion Test in HES D 6001. However,
the test method shall be as indicated specifically for each part according to the type of plating and the
shape of the part.
5.5 Color Fastness Test
This test shall be performed in accordance with Section 4.5 of Color Fastness Test in HES D 6001.
However, the test shall be performed only on specified parts.
For additional plating processes, test methods other than the above may be added.
Example: Sulfur dioxide test method, Corrodkote test method, Exposure test method, etc.
