Open access to public domain data

With an objective of promoting exploration
activities in Pakistan in mind, the
Government has taken an initiative to
provide online data access to the interested
E&P companies through implementation of
state of the art data management solution of
Landmark Graphics Corp. Under applicable
laws, the ownership of all geological,
geophysical and other data acquired by E&P
companies operating in Pakistan, rests with
the Government. DGPC being the regulatory
agency is custodian of all such data and is
responsible to make available public domain
data to other interested E&P companies as
and when required. Therefore, keeping in
line with international trends and realizing the
value as well as importance of proper data
management solutions in bolstering
exploration activities, a central data
repository has been established to house all
data; both confidential as well public domain.
One of the major achievements has been
retrieval of sticky tapes in which valuable
seismic and well data was stored that
otherwise would have been lost forever,
causing severe damage to the Government
efforts to promote investment in E&P sector.
The Government also started scanning &
digitisation of all hard data so that online
access can be made a real possibility.

expected that about 20 terabytes of existing
data will be uploaded onto PetroBank making
the dream of online access come true. The
new process for reviewing, purchasing and
data transfer includes simple subscriptions to
the online access system through a high
bandwidth connection from which clients will
be able to view, select, and after necessary
approvals, download data to their desktops.
The launching pad for easy, swift and cost
effective access to public data is now set and
E&P companies can make full use of this
cutting-edge facility. Pakistan is one of the four
places in the world i.e. Calgary, Aberdeen and
Perth, where technologically advanced data
management centres have been set up.
