Symbolic Logic Mr. Antonio M. Pangilinan
Dicto Simpliciter - An argument based on an unqualified generalization.

Example: “Running is good for the heart. Therefore, running will be good for Pedro who is
suffering from a heart disease.”

Hasty Generalization - A conclusion based on the insufficient number of proofs.

Example: “While running, Mark had a heart attack. Therefore, running is bad for the heart.”

Post Hoc or Fallacy of False Cause - This fallacy is committed when one attributes a
wrong cause to something, which is often due to a mere temporal succession of two
events.

Example: “Edgar Allan Poe’s literary genius must have been caused by drinking liquor, for
it is said that before he would write he would first drink some liquor.”

Contradictory Premises - An argument is deduced from incompatible affirmations.

Example: If there is an irresistible force, there can be no immovable object. If there is an

immovable object, there can be no irresistible force.”

Ad Misericordiam or Fallacy of Appeal to Pity- A logical fallacy in which one tries to

win the support by their arguments by exploiting their opponents feeling of pity.

Example: “This employee certainly deserves a promotion, for he can hardly feed his starving
family.”

False Analogy - It is the process of making a connection between two things where there
is no known connection between them.

Example: “People who buy stocks are no different from people who bet on horse racing.
They both risk their money with little chance of making a big profit.”

Hypothesis Contrary to Fact - A conclusion that is drawn from an untrustworthy fact

or statement.

Example: “If I will study for my exam in Logic, I will get an A.”

Poisoning the Well or Ad Hominem- A fallacious argument which attacks the person
with negative remarks about him/her.

Example: “She cannot be a good president, for she comes from a broken family.”
