PROBLEMS ON AGES, PROBLEMS ON AVERAGES

Date : 14.03.2019

1. Father is four times the age of his daughter. If after 5 years, he would be three times of
daughter’s age, then further after 5 years, how many times he would be of his daughter’s age?

A. 1.5 times B. 2 times

C. 2.5 times D. 3 times

Sol: Option C

Explain: Let the daughter's age be x and father's age be 4x.

So as per question, 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5). So x = 10.
Hence present age of daughter is 10 years and present age of father is 40 years.
So after 5 + 5 = 10 years, daughter age would be 20 years and father’s age would be 50 years.
Hence father would be 50/20 = 2.5 times of daughter’s age.

2. What is Aman's present age, if after 20 years his age will be 10 times his age 10 years back?
A. 6.2 years B. 7.7 years
C. 13.3 years D. 10 years

Sol : Option C

Explain : Let Aman's present age be x

Aman's age before 10 years = x - 10)

Aman's age after 20 years = (x + 20)

We are given that, Aman's age after 20 years (x + 20) is 10 times his age 10 years back (x – 10)

Therefore, (x + 20) = 10 (x – 10)

Solving the equation, we get x + 20 = 10x – 100

9x = 120, x = 13.3 years

3. Nisha is 15 years elder to Romi. If 5 years ago, Nisha was 3 times as old as Romi, then find
Nisha’s present age.

A. 32.5 years B. 27.5 years

C. 25 years D. 24.9 years

Sol : Option B
Explain : Let age of Romi be y
Nisha is 15 years elder than Romi = (y + 15). So Nisha's age 5 years ago = (y + 15 – 5).
Romi's age before 5 years = (y – 5)
5 years ago, Nisha is 3 times as old as Romi
(y + 15 – 5) = 3 (y – 5)
(y + 10) = (3y – 15)
2y = 25 ⇒ y = 12.5
Romi's age = 12.5 years
Nisha's age = (y + 15) = (12.5 + 15) = 27.5 years.

4. One year ago, the ratio of Honey and Piyush ages was 2: 3 respectively. After five years from
now, this ratio becomes 4: 5. How old is Piyush now?
A. 5 years B. 25 years
C. 10 years D. 15 years

Sol : Option C
Explain : We are given that age ratio of Honey: Piyush = 2: 3
Honey’s age = 2x and Piyush’s age = 3x
One year ago, their age was 2x and 3x.
Hence at present, Honey's age = 2x +1 and Piyush's age = 3x +1
After 5 years, Honey’s age = (2x +1) + 5 = (2x + 6)
Piyush's age = (3x +1) + 5 = (3x + 6)
After 5 years, this ratio becomes 4: 5. Therefore,
(2x+6) / (3x+6) = 4/5
10x + 30 = 12x + 24 ⇒ x = 3
Piyush's present age = (3x + 1) = (3x 3 + 1) = 10 years
Honey's present age = (2x + 1) = (2x 3 + 1) = 7 years

5. Ten years ago, the age of mother was three times the age of her son. After ten years, mother’s
age will be twice that of his son. Find the ratio of their present ages.

A. 11 : 7 B. 9 : 5

C. 7 : 4 D. 7 : 3

Sol : Option D
Explain : 10 years ago, age of mother was three times the age of her son. Say, the age of son
was x and mother's age was 3x.
At present: Mother's age is (3x + 10) and son’s age is (x + 10)
After ten years: Mother's age will be (3x + 10) +10 and son’s age will be (x + 10) + 10. Given
that, mother’s age is twice that of son after ten years.
(3x + 10) +10 = 2 [(x + 10) + 10]
(3x + 20) = 2[x + 20]
Solving the equation, we get x = 20
(3x + 10): (x + 10) = 70: 30 = 7: 3.

6. The average marks of 13 papers is 40. The average marks of the first 7 papers are 42 and that
of the last seven papers is 35. Find the marks obtained in the 7th paper.

A. 23 B. 38 C. 19 D. 57

Sol : Option C

Explain : The average of 13 papers is 40, so the sum = 13 × 40 = 520

The average of first 7 papers is 42, so the sum will be = 7 × 42 = 294

The average of last 7 papers is 35, so the sum will be = 7×35 = 245

So, the marks obtained in the 7th paper will be = 539 – 520 = 19

7. Mukul has earned as an average of 4,200 dollars for the first eleven months of the year. If he
justifies his staying in the US on the basis of his ability to earn at least 5000 dollars per month
for the entire year, then how much should he earn (in dollars) in the last month to achieve his
required average for the whole year?

A. 14600 B. 13800 C. 12,800 D. 11800

Sol : Option B

Explain :

The salary expectation for the whole year is 5000. So, the total earning will be 60000.

Earning for 11 months is 4200 so the total earnings are 46200.

Now for the last month he has to earn 60000 – 46200 = 13800.

8. The average of x, y and z is 45. x is as much more than the average as y is less than the
average. Find the value of z.

A. 45 years B. 35 years C. 60 years D. 15 years

Sol : Option A

Explain :

Sum of x, y and z will be 135. As the average is 45 and Also given that ,

X-45= 45-Y, X+Y= 90, therefore, 90+Z=135;Z=45

4
9. The average for some number of terms (say ‘n’ ) is zero. How many maximum numbers of
terms can be negative?

A. 0 B. n C. n+1 D. n-1

Sol : Option D
Explain :
Here, as sum of n terms will 0, so we can have at the most n-1 terms negative and the last term
whose magnitude will be equal to the sum of all the negative terms.

10. The average salary of 30 officers in a firm is Rs.120 and the average salary of laborers is Rs.
40. Find the total number of laborers if the average salary of the firm is Rs. 50.

A. Rs. 180 B. Rs. 420 C. Rs. 240 D. Rs. 210

Sol : Option D

Explain :

The sum of salary of officers will be = 30×120 = 3600

Let the number of labourers = X.

ATQ, 3600 + 40X = 50(30+X)

2100 = 10X

X= 210

Exercise No: 2
CHAIN RULE
Date : 20.03.2019

1. 12 examiners (men) work 16 hours a day to check 24000 answer sheets in 18 days. Now, 24
examiners would work how many hours per day to check 36000 answer sheets in 36 days?

Solution and Explain :

Examiners hours answer sheets days

12 16 24000 18

24 ? 36000 36

As we have to calculate the hours in this case, the base would be hours.
Comparisons:

Element = Examiners: If there are 24 examiners now and there were 12 earlier, they need to
work lesser hours per day.

Element = Answer sheets: If there are more answer sheets to be checked now, they need to work
more hours per day.

Element = Days: If there are more days available, then they need to work lesser hours per day.

Applying chain rule: 16 × (12/24) × (36000/24000) × (18/36) = 6 hours.

In the same illustration if hours were given and answer sheets were missing, then also the
method would have been same. Let us solve the same illustration in that manner as well.

6
2. 12 examiners work 16 hours a day to check 24000 answer sheets in 18 days. Now, 24
examiners would check how many answer sheets working 6 hours a day in 36 days?
[

Solution and Explain:

Examiners Hours Answer Sheets Days

12 16 24000 18

24 6 ? 36

Following the same steps :

As we have to calculate the answer sheets in this case, the base would be answer sheets.

If there are 24 examiners now and there were 12 earlier, they will check more answer sheets.

If they work for lesser hours per day, they will check lesser answer sheets.

If there are more days available, then they will check more answer sheets.

24000 × (24/12) × (6/16) × (36/18) = 36000.

7
3. A certain number of men can complete a piece of work in 180 days. If there are 30 men less, it
will take 20 days more for the work to be completed. How many men were there originally?

1. 135 2. 165 3. 150

4. 180 5. 300
[

Solution and Explain:

Let there be x men originally.

They were to complete the work in 180 days but as the number of persons is reduced to x – 30.

∴ Work takes 20 more days. So the equation is 180x = (x – 30)200 ⇒ 20x = 6000 ⇒ x = 300.

4. A garrison is provided with ration for 90 soldiers to last for 70 days. For how much more time
would the whole ration last if 10 additional soldiers join them after 20 days?

1. 40 days 2. 36 days 3. 30 days

4. 56¼ days 5. 45 days

Solution and Explain:

Let the whole ration now lasts for x days. Equating the consumption on both sides, we get
(90 × 70) = (90 × 20) + (100 × x) ⇒ x = 45 days.

5: A man can walk a certain distance at a uniform speed in 100 days. How long will it take him to
cover twice the distance at half the normal speed?

1. 50 days 2. 25 days 3. 12½ days

4. 200 days 5. 400 days

Sol: Option 5

Explain:
Earlier time = 100 days.
Distance is doubled and speed is reduced to half. ∴ time will become 2 × 2 i.e. 4 times.
Hence now it will take 100 × 4 = 400 days.

8
6. A 100 m long 3 m high and 30 cm wide wall is built by 30 men, 20 women and 50 children
working 9 hours a day in 20 days. How long a wall 1.5 m high 30 cm wide can be built by 15
men, 25 women and 35 children working 2 hour a day in 15 days (given men, women and
children are equally efficient)?

1. 75 m 2. 25 m 3. 50 m
4. 100 m 5. 125 m

Solution and Explain:

Earlier dimensions of the wall = 100 × 3 × 0.30.

New dimensions = L × 1.5 × 0.3.
∴ As men, women and children are given to be equally efficient, so in the first case, the total
number of persons is 100 (i.e. 30 + 20 + 50) and the same in the second case is 75 (15+25+35).
Length of wall = L = (75x100) x (2x9) x (15x20) x (100 x 3 x 3 x 0.3)/(1.5 x 0.3) ⇒ L = 25 m.

7. A group of people can do a work in 30 days. With 10 of them being absent, the work is done in
40 days. How many people are there in the original group?

Solution and Explain:

Let there be x number of people who do the work in 30 days. When there are x – 10
people, they do the work in 40 days. (x / (x-10)) = (40/30) (Note that it is not (40/30) , as the
number of people working and the number of days it takes to finish the work are inversely
proportional).So, 30x = 40x – 400 ⇒x = 40. Hence, answer is 40 days.

8. If 10 men or 12 women take 40 days to complete a piece of work, how long will 15 men and 6
women take to do the same work?

Solution and Explain:

Productivity of 10 men = Productivity of 12 women

⇒ Productivity of 1 man = Productivity of (12/10) women.
∴Productivity of (15 men + 6 women)
= Productivity of (15 + 6 × (10/12) ) men = Productivity of 20 men
If 10 men take 40 days, then 20 men will take (10/20) × 40 days = 20 days.
(Again note the inverse variance relationship used in computing the number of days). Hence,
answer is 20 days.

9
9. If 10 programmers, working 16 hours a day, can finish the coding of a project in 25 days, then
how many days will be taken by 12 software engineers, working 5 hours a day to finish the
coding of the project? It is known that 3 software engineers code as much as 2 programmers in
the same time.

1. 25 days 2. 50 days 3. 75 days

4. 100 days 5. 125 days

Solution and Explain:

Numbers Hrs Days

Programmer 10 16 25

Engineers 12 5 x

Also, 3E = 2P i.e. 12 E = 8P ⇒ 10 P × 16 × 25 = 12 E × 5 × x.

⇒10 P × 16 × 25 = 8P × 5 × x. Number of days = x = 100 days. Hence, answer is 100 days.

10. A certain group of men were assigned to do a piece of work in 50 days. But 6 of them
became absent and it took 56 days to complete the work. Find the original number of men in the
group.

1. 40 men 2. 56 men 3. 48 men

4. 60 men 5. 24 men

Solution and Explain:

Let the original number of men = x.

They were to complete the job in 50 days but as 6 of them became absent from the 1st day. ∴
Men left = x – 6.
They will complete the work in 56 days. ∴ M1D1 = M2 D2
x × 50 = (x – 6) × 56 ⇒ x = 56. Hence, answer is 56 men

1. A, B and C started a business each investing Rs.10000. After 4 month A withdraws Rs.3000, B
withdraws Rs.4000, C invest Rs.3000 more At the end of the years, a total profit was Rs.32800.
Find the share of C.

A. Rs. 10000 B. Rs. 14400 C. Rs. 17600

D. Rs. 19200 E. None of These
[

Solution : Option B
Explain :
Ratio of capital of A, B and C.
= ( 10,000 × 4 + 7000 × 8 ) : ( 10,000 × 4 + 6000 × 8 ) : ( 10,000 × 4 + 13000 x 8 )
= 96000 : 88000 : 144000
So, Ratio becomes 12 : 11:18
Distributing the final profit of Rs. 32800 in the given ratio, the share of C becomes 14400.

2. Joey started a business and he invested in 38000, After some month, amar came to join with
him and invest 28500.The end of the year the total profit was divided among them into ratio form
16: 8.Find after how many months did amar join.

A. 4 B. 6 C. 8
D. 3 E. None of These
Solution: Option A
Explain:
Step 1: we can assume that amar join into business after x months. So amar money was invested
for (12 – x) months.

Step 2: 38000 x 12 / 28500 x ( 12 – x ) = 2 / 1 (The given ratio of 16 :8 is equivalent to 2 :1)

456000 = 28500 ( 12 – x ) = 57 ( 12 – x ) = 456 = x = 4

After 4 months amar join the business.

11
3. Shakeel started a software business by investing Rs. 20,000. After six months, Neel joined him

Shakeel’s share in the profit?

A. Rs. 6200 B. Rs. 6400 C. Rs. 4200

D .Rs. 7750 E. None of These

Solution: Option A

Explain:

Ratio of capitals of Shakeel and Neel

= (20,000 × 36): (30,000 × 30) = 720000: 900000 = 4: 5.

Shakeel’s share is = Rs. 13950 × 4 / 9 = Rs. 6200.

4. A, B and C started a business by investing Rs. 250000 Rs. 300000 and Rs.350000
respectively.Find the share of B, out of an annual profit of Rs.187200.

A. Rs. 65400 B. Rs. 62400 C. Rs. 63400

D. Rs. 66200 E. None of These

Solution: Option B

Explain:

Ratio of shares of A, B and C = Ratio of their investment

A : B : C = 250000 : 300000 : 350000 = 5 : 6 : 7

Share of B = Rs. [187200 x 6 / 18] = 62400.

12
5. Abu and Salim started a partnership business investing some amount of money in the ratio of 4
: 6 . Shakeel joined them after six months with an amount equal to that of Salim . In what
proportion should the profit at the end of one year be distributed among Abu, Salim and
Shakeel ?

A. 5:3:4 B. 4:6:2 C. 5:3:2

D. 4:6:3 E. None of These

Solution: Option D

Explain:

As (4:6 is equivalent to 2:3) So let the initial investment of money ratio of Abu and Salim is 2x
and 3x. So Abu , Salim and Shakeel ratio of investment will be ( Abu : Salim : Shakeel ) = (2x ×
12 ) : ( 3x × 12 ) : ( 3x × 6 ) = 24 : 36 : 18 = 4 : 6 : 3

6. Munna received Rs. 3000 as his share out of the total profit of Rs. 4500 which he and Raju
earned at the end of one year. If Munna invested Rs.60000 for 6 months, whereas Raju invested
his amount for the whole year, what was the amount invested by Raju?

A. Rs. 12000 B. Rs. 15000 C. Rs. 18000

Solution: Option B

Explain:

Suppose Raju invested Rs. x. Then, Ratio of their investments will be:

Munna : Raju = 60000 * 6 : x *12.

360000/12x= 3000/1500

x = 15000

13
7. Vimla started a business investing Rs. 90000. After 3 months, Pulkit joined him with a capital
of Rs. 120000. After another 6 months, Alia joined them with a capital of Rs. 180000. At the end
of the year, they made a profit of Rs. 40000. What would be Alia’s share in it?

A. Rs 7000 B. Rs 6000 C. Rs 5000

D. Rs 8000 E. None of These

Solution: Option D

Explain:

Ratio of investments of Vimla, Pulkit and Alia

Vimla:Pulkit:Alia = 90000*12:120000*9:180000*3 = 2:2:1

Alia share = Rs. 40000 * (1/5) = Rs. 8000

8. In business, Anuj and Chirag invested amounts in the ratio 4:2, whereas the ratio between
amounts invested by Anuj and Bimal was 6:4, If Rs 314600 was their profit, how much amount
did Bimal receive?

A. Rs 88000 B. Rs 98000 C. Rs 94400

D. Rs 96800 E. None of These

Solution: Option D

Explain:

Anuj:Bimal = 6:4 = 3:2

Anuj:Chirag = 4:2 = 2:1

Anuj:Bimal:Chirag = 6:4:3

Bimal’s share = (4/13)*314600 = 96800

14
9. Clark got Rs.3000 as his share out of a total profit of Rs.4500 which he and Chintu earned at
the end of one year. If Clark invested Rs.10000 for 6 months, where as Chintu invested his
amount for the whole year, what was the amount invested by Chintu ?

A. Rs. 1000 B. Rs. 5000 C. Rs. 2200

D. Rs. 2500 E. None of These

Solution: Option D

Explain:

Clark got 3000 so Chintu got 1500 .(The ratio becomes 2:1)

Now as Clark invested 10000 for 6 months and chintu invested x for the whole year so the ratio
becomes: (10000*6)/(x*12) = 2:1

Solving for x we get ⇒ 2500

10. Rs.1400 is divided among Amla,Bimla and Simla so that Amla receives half as much as
Bimla and Bimla half as much as Simla. Then Simla's share is:

A. Rs. 200 B. Rs. 300 C. Rs. 800

D. Rs. 600 E. None of These

Solution: Option C

Explain:

Let Amla's share = Rs.x. Then

Bimla's share = Rs.2x

Simla's share = Rs.4x

Amla:Bimla:Simla = x:2x:4x=1:2:4

Hence, Simla's share = 1400*4/7 = Rs.800

Exercise No: 4
TIME AND DISTANCE
Date : 26.03.2019

1. What is the distance covered by a car travelling at a speed of 40 kmph in 15 minutes?

Solution:

We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes

Therefore, 15 minutes = 1/4 hours (because 15/60 = 1/4)

Distance = Speed * Time

Distance = 40 * (1/4) = 10 kms

[

2. A car is travelling at a speed of 50 kmph. How long will it take to travel 60 kms?

Solution:

Distance = Speed * Time

60 = 50 * T

T = 1.2 hrs or 1 hr and 12 minutes

16
3. Walking at 5/6th of his usual seed, Raman reached his destination 10 minutes late. Find his
usual time and he times taken on this occasion.

Solution:

Let his usual speed be x km/hr and his usual time be t hours

His time on this occasion is

The time taken is 10/6 hrs

Since the distance travelled on both occasions is the same,

xt = * 10/6 ( because, Distance = Speed * Time)

Solving for t, we get t = 5/6hrs

= 50 minutes and the time taken on this occasion = 50 + 10 = 60 minutes

4. While going to office, Rajat travels at a speed of 30 kmph and on his way back, he travels at a
speed of 45 kmph. What is his average speed of the whole journey?

Solution:

When distance travelled is same, then average speed = 2ab/(a+b)(where a and b are two different
speeds)

Therefore, Average Speed = 2*45*30 2*45*30

45+30 45

Average Speed = 36 kmph

17
5. A CTU bus and an ordinary bus leave Chandigarh for Ambala- a distance of 32 km
simultaneously. The ratio between the average speed of the CTU bus and that of the ordinary bus
is 3:2. The CTU bus reaches Ambala and immediately leaves back for Chandigarh and meets the
ordinary bust Lalru. What is the distance between Ambala and Lalru?

Solution: Speed of CTU bus : Speed of ordinary bus :: 3:2

As Distance ∞ Speed

Distance travelled by CTU bus : Distance travelled by ordinary bus :: 3:2

Let the distance travelled between Ambala and Lalru be x km

Then the distance travelled by CTU bus = 32 + x

While the distance travelled by ordinary bus = 32 – x

Therefore, 32 + x : 32 – x :: 3:2

Solving for x, we get x = 6.4 km (i.e. the distance between Ambala and Lalru)

6. Travelling at 6 kmph, Niharika reaches her office 20 minutes late. Travelling at 8 kmph, she
reaches her office 30 minutes early. What is her usual speed and time taken to reach her office?
[

Solution: Let her usual speed be S kmph and her usual time be t hours

Therefore, 6*(t+20) = 8 * ( t- 30( t- 30)

60 60

Solving for t, we get t = 3 hrs

Since the usual time taken = 3 hrs, usual distance travelled = 3S kms

Equating distance travelled usually, with distance travelled at any of the other two speeds, we get
6 * (3+20/60) = 3S

Therefore, S = 6, 2/3 kmph

18
7. How much time will a 360 meters long train running at 108 kmph will take to cross a standing
electricity pole?

Solution: We know that, 1 km/hr = 5/18 m/sec

Hence, 108 kmph = 108 * 5/18 m/sec = 30 m/sec

Distance = Speed * Time

360 = 30 * Time

Time = 12 secs

8. What will be the average of the following set of terms: 23, 25, 27, 29 and 31?

Solution: We know that the average is the middle term when the number of terms is odd, but
before that, let's see if it is A.P. or not.

Since, there difference between two consecutive terms, so the average will be taken as the middle
term i.e. 27.

9. Find the average of the following terms: 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27.

Solution: We have discussed above that if the number of terms is even, then the average will be
the average of the middle two terms.

So, the average here will be (24 + 25)/2 = 49/2 = 24.5

10. The average weight of a class of 24 students is 36 years. When the weight of the teacher is
also included, the average weight increases by 1kg. What is the weight of the teacher?

Solution: We know that, in case of increase in average,

Age of new member= Previous average+ (Increase in average X Number of members including
new member)

Therefore,

Age of new member = 36 + (1 × 25)

Age of new member = 36 + 25 = 61

TIME AND WORK
Date : 27.03.2019

1. In the beginning, Ram works at a rate such that he can finish a piece of work in 24 hrs, but he
only works at this rate for 16 hrs. After that, he works at a rate such that he can do the whole
work in 18 hrs. If Ram is to finish this work at a stretch, how many hours will he take to finish
this work?

a) 12 hrs b) 18 hrs c) 11½ hrs

d) 15 hrs e) 22 hrs

Solution : Option E

Explanation:
Ram’s 16 hr work = 16/24 = 2/3. Remaining work = 1 – 2/3 = 1/3.
Using work and time formula: This will be completed in 1/3 × 18 i.e. 6 hrs.
So, total time taken to complete work = 16 + 6= 22 hrs.

2. A can do a piece of work in 10 days, and B can do the same work in 20 days. With the help of
C, they finished the work in 4 days. C can do the work in how many days, working alone?

1. 5 days 2. 10 days 3. 15 days

4. 20 days 5. 25 days

Solution : Option 1

Explanation:
Their combined 4 day work = 4(1/10 + 1/15) = 12/20 = 3/5.
Remaining work = 1 – 3/5 = ⅖.
This means C did 2/5 work in 4 days, hence he can finish the complete work in 5/2 × 4 = 10
days.

21
3. A can do a piece of work in 12 days. B can do this work in 16 days. A started the work alone.
After how many days should B join him, so that the work is finished in 9 days?

1. 2 days 2. 3 days 3. 4 days

4. 5 days 5. 1 days

Solution : Option 4
Explanation:
A's work in 9 days = 9/12 = 3/4. Remaining work = 1/4.
This work was done by B in 1/4 × 16 = 4 days.
∴ B would have joined A after 9 – 4 = 5 days.

4. A and B can do a piece of work in 4 days, while C and D can do the same work in 12 days. In
how many days will A, B, C and D do it together?
1. 12 days 2. 4 days 3. 3 days
4. 2 days 5. None of these

Solution : Option 3

Explanation: A, B, C and D will together take ¼ + 1/12 = 4/12 = 1/3 ⇒ 3 days to complete the
work.

5. A and B can do a piece of work in 40 days, B and C can do it in 120 days. If B alone can do it
in 180 days, in how many days will A and C do it together?

1. 45 days 2. 22.5 days 3. 25 days

4. 18 days 5. 12 days

Solution : Option 1
Explanation: A + B take 40 days. B alone takes 180 days.
∴ A will take 1/40 – 1/180 = 7/360 ⇒ 360/7 days.
B + C take 120 days. ∴ C alone will take 1/120 – 1/180 = 1/360
i.e. 360 days. ∴ A & C together will take 7/360 + 1/360

22
= 8/360 ⇒ 360/8 = 45 days to complete the work.
6. A, B, C, and D can do a piece of work in 20 days. If A and B can do it together in 50 days, and
C alone in 60 days, find the time in which D alone can do it.
1. 120 days 2. 200 days 3. 150 days
4. 90 days 5. 75 days

Solution : Option 5
Explanation:
D alone will take 1/20 – 1/50 – 1/60 = 4/300 = 1/75
⇒ 75 days to complete the work.

7. A, B, and C can do a piece of work in 8 days. B and C together do it in 24 days. B alone can
do it in 40 days. In what time will it be done by C working alone?
1. 25 days 2. 24 days 3. 60 days
4. 20 days 5. 30 days

Solution : Option 3
Explanation:
B & C do this work in 24 days. B alone does this work in 40 days. C alone will take 1/24 – 1/40
= 2/120=1/60 ⇒ 60 days to finish the work.

8. A and B undertake to do a piece of work for Rs. 450. A can do it in 20 days and B can do it in
40 days. With the help of C, they finish it in 8 days. How much should C be paid for his
contribution?
1. Rs. 180 2. Rs. 40 3. Rs. 120
4. Rs. 60 5. Rs. 50

Sol : Option 1
Explanation:

23
A & B would have done 8/20 & 8/40 of the work respectively in 8 days. Together they have done
3/5th of the work. This implies that C has done 2/5th of the work. Thus, C should be paid 2/5th
of the amount i.e. 450 × 2/5 = Rs. 180.
9. Daku and Tamatar can do a piece of work in 70 and 60 days respectively. They began the work
together, but Daku leaves after some days and Tamatar finished the remaining work in 47 days.
After how many days did Daku leave?

1. 14 days 2. 16 days 3. 18 days

4. 10 days 5. 7 days

Solution : Option 5

Explanation :

Tamatar would have done 47/60 work in 47 days. The remaining work i.e. 13/60 must have been
done by Daku and Tamatar together. They can do the whole work in 60 × 70 / (60 + 70) = 60 ×
70/130 = 420/13 days.

So, they would have done 13/60 work in 420/13 × 13/60 = 7 days. Therefore, Daku left the work
after 7 days.

10. Ajay and Vijay undertake to do a piece of work for Rs. 480. Ajay alone can do it in 75 days
while Vijay alone can do it in 40 days. With the help of Pradeep, they finish the work in 25 days.
How much should Pradeep get for his work?

1. Rs. 40 2. Rs. 20 3. Rs. 360

4. Rs. 100 5. Rs. 60

Solution : Option 2

Explanation:

In 24 days, they would have done 1/3 and 5/8 of the work.

The remaining work is 1 – (1/3 + 5/8) = 1/24.

This means Pradeep has done 1/24th of the work, so he should be paid 1/24th of the amount i.e.

24
480 × 1/24 = Rs. 20 is the answer.

a) Rs. 10000 b) Rs. 6000 c) Rs. 5000

d) Rs. 2000 e) None of these

Solution: Option C
Explanation:
If Diff. between SI & CI for 2 years is Rs. x, then Principal = x (100/r)2 P = 50 x (100x100)/
(10x10) → P = 5000.

2. The difference in simple interest and compound interest on a certain sum of money in 2 years
at 18 % p.a. is Rs. 162. The sum is

a) Rs. 4000 b) Rs. 5200 c) Rs. 4250

d) Rs. 5000 e) None of these

Solution: Option D
Explanation:

3. The compound interest on a certain sum of money for 2 years is Rs. 208 and the simple
interest for the same time at the same rate is Rs. 200. Find the rate %.

a) 5 % b) 6 % c) 7 %

d) 4 % e) 8 %
[

Solution : Option E

Explanation:

SI = Rs. 200 = Rs. 100 + Rs. 100

CI = Rs. 208 = Rs. 100 + Rs. 108 (In first year SI & CI are equal.)

Therefore, Rs.8 Gap is because of the interest of 1st year interest.

Rs. 8 is interest on Rs. 100, R= (8x100)/(100x1) % ,R = 8%

4. The difference between compound interest and simple interest on a certain sum for 2 years at

Exercise No: 9
RATIO AND PROPORTION / PIPES & CISTERNS
Date : 08.04.2019

1. Pipe M and N running together can fill a cistern in 6 minutes. If M takes 5 minutes less than N
to fill the cistern, then the time in which N alone can fill the cistern will be

a) 15 min b) 10 min

c) 30 min d) 25 min

Solution : Option A
Explanation:
Let pipe M fills the cistern in x minutes.
Therefore, pipe N will fill the cistern in (x+5) minutes.
Now, 1/x + 1/(x+5) = 1/6 → x = 10
Thus, the pipe M can fill in 10 minutes, so N can fill in 10+5 =15 minutes.

2. A cistern normally takes 10 hours to be filled by a tap but because of one open outlet pipe, it
takes 5 hours more. In how many hours will the outlet pipe will empty a full cistern?

a) 20 hours b) 24 hours

c) 30 hours d) None of these

Solution : Option C
Explanation:

40
As cistern is filled in 10 hours, therefore in 1 hour, filled part → 1/10th
Now, due to outlet pipe, filled part in 1 hour = 1/15th
Part of the cistern emptied, due to leakage in 1 hour = 1/10 - 1/15 = 1/30th
Therefore the leak will empty the full cistern in 30 hrs.
3. Two pipes can fill a tank in 12 and 20 hours respectively. The pipes are opened simultaneously
and it is found that due to leakage in the bottom, 30 minutes extra are taken for the cistern to be
filled up. If the cistern is full, in what time would the leak empty it?

a) 120 hrs b) 100 hrs

c) 115 hrs d) 112 hrs

Solution : Option A

Explanation:

Cistern filled by both pipes in one hour = 1/12+1/20=2/15th

Therefore both pipes filled the cistern in 15/2hrs.

Now, due to leakage both pipes filled the cistern in 15/2+30/60=8hrs.

Therefore Due to leakage, filled part in one hour = 1/8 Therefore part of cistern emptied, due to
leakage in one hour = 2/15-1/8= 1/120th

∴ In 120 hrs, the leak would empty the cistern.

4. Two pipes P and Q can fill a cistern in 36 and 48 minutes respectively. Both pipes are opened
together, after how many minutes should Q be turned off,so that the cistern be fill in 24 minutes?

a) 6 min b) 16 min

c) 10 min d) 12 min

Solution : Option B

Explanation:

41
P can fill the cistern in 36 minutes,so in 1 min, P can fill the cistern = 1/36th part

In 24 min, P can fill the cistern = 24/36 = 2/3rd. Remaining part = 1- 2/3 = 1/3rd

As Q can fill full cistern in 48 minutes,so it will fill

1/3rd part in 16 minutes.

5. Two pipes A and B can fill a tank in 20 and 16 hours respectively. Pipe B alone is kept open
for 1/4 of time and both pipes are kept open for remaining time. In how many hours, the tank
will be full?

a) 18 1/3 hrs b) 20 hrs

c) 10 hrs d) 12 1/4 hrs

Solution : Option C

Explanation: Let the required time be x hours, then

⇒ x/16+3x/80 = 1⇒ x= 11=10 hours.

6. Two taps M and N can separately fill a cistern in 30 and 20 minutes respectively. They started
to fill a cistern together but tap A is turned off after few minutes and tap B fills the rest part of
cistern in 5 minutes. After how many minutes was tap M turned-off?

a) 9 min b) 10 min

c) 12 mi d) None of these

Solution : Option A

Explanation:

Let M was turned off after x min. Then, cistern filled by M in x min + cistern

filled by N in (x+5) min = 1 ⇒ x/30 + (x+5)/20 = 1 ⇒ 5x+15=60 ⇒ x = 9 min.

7. Three fill pipes A, B and C can fill separately a cistern in 12, 16 and 20 minutes respectively.
A was opened first. After 2 minute, B was opened and after 2 minutes from the start of B, C was
also opened. Find the time when the cistern will be full after opening of C?

a) 3 21/47 min b) 4 1/2 min

c) 3 9 15/16 min d) None of these

Solution : Option A
Explanation:
Let cistern will be full in x min. Then part filled by A in x min + part filled by
B in (x-2) min + part filled by C in (x-4) min = 1
⇒ x/12 + (x-2)/16 + (x-4)/20 = 1 ⇒ 47x - 78 = 240⇒ x = 162/47 = 321/47 min

8. A cistern filled in 20 hours by three pipes A, B and C. The pipe C is twice as fast as B and B is
thrice as fast as A. How much time will pipe A alone take to fill the tank?

a) 200 hrs b) 205 hrs

c) 352 hrs d) Cannot be determined

Solution : Option A

Explanation:

Suppose pipe A alone takes x hours to fill the tank.

Then pipes B and C will take x/3 and x/6 hours respectively to fill the tank.

Therefore 1/x + 3/x + 6/x= 1/20 ⇒ 10/x = 1/20 ⇒ x = 200hrs

43
9. Three taps P,Q and R can fill a tank in 10,20 and 30hours respectively. If P is open all the time
and Q and R are open for one hour each alternately, then the tank will be full in :

a) 6 hrs b) 6.5 hrs

c) 7 hrs d) 7.5 hrs

Solution : Option C
Explanation: (P+Q)’s 1 hour’s work = (1/10+1/20) = 3/20
(A+C)’s 1 hour’s work = (1/10+1/30) = 2/15
Part filled in 2 hrs = (3/20+2/15) = 17/60
Part filled in 6 hrs = (3×17/60) = 17/20
Remaining Part = (1-17/20) = 3/20
Now, it is the turn of P and Q and 3/20 part is filled by P and Q in 1 hour.
Therefore, Total time taken to fill the tank = (6+1) hrs = 7 hrs

10. A tank has a leak which would empty it in 10 hours,a tap is turned on which admits 4 litre a
minute into the tank and now it emptied in 12 hours. The capacity of the tank is:

a) 648 litres b) 1440 litres

c) 1200 litres d) 1800 litres

Solution : Option B
Explanation:
Let speed of the bike be x km/hr. Let speed of the electric car be y km/hr
∴ 200/x + 600/y = 10 ∴ 300/x + 500/y = 11
Part filled in 1 hour

44
= (1/10-1/12) = 1/60
Time taken to fill the tank = 60 hours
Water filled in 60 hours =4*60*60=1440 litres

AREA AND VOLUME / HEIGHTS & DISTANCES
Date : 11.04.2019

1. A tower standing on a horizontal plane makes an angle α at a point which is 160m apart from
the foot of the tower. On moving 100m towards the base of the tower, the angle of elevation
becomes 2α. Find the height of the tower.

a) 100m b) 80m

c) 120m d) 90m

Sol : Option B
Explanation:
Let AB be the tower of height x m.
Let ∠BCA = α and ∠BDA = 2α such that CD = 100m and AD = 60m
[

In ΔABD, tan 2α = AB/AD x/60 -------(1)

In Δ ACB, tanα = x/160 -------(2)
Now tan2α = (2tanα)/1-tan2α

(Using (1) & (2))

45
⇒ 1602 – x2 = 2 × 160 × 60
⇒ 25600 – x2 = 19200
⇒ x2 = 6400 ⇒ x = 80
So the height of the tower is 80m

2. A man is standing on a corner of a square field. He observes that the angle of elevation of the
top of a pole in the corner just diagonally opposite to this corner is 600. When he moves 100√2m
from the corner along the same straight line (along the diagonal joining the two corners in
question), he finds that the angle is 300. Find the area of the field.

a) 100m2 b) 2500m2

c) 1600m2 d) 1200m2

Sol : Option B
Explanation:
Let ABCD is the square field, the person is standing at A and the tower is CE.

Here ∠CAE = 600

Let the person moves to the point F such that AF = 100√2m and ∠CFE = 300
Now in ΔACE tan 600 = CE/AC ⇒ CE = √3AC ----(1)
In ΔECF, tan 300 = EC/CF

-----(2)

Equating (1) & (2) we get

46
⇒ 3AC = 100√2m + AC
⇒ 2AC = 100√2m
⇒ AC = 50√2m
Since AC is the diagonal of the square, so the side of the square is 50m. Hence the area of the
square field is (50)2 = 2500m2.

3. From the top of a hill 120m high, the angle of depression of top and bottom of a tower are
450and 600 respectively, find the height of the tower.

a) 40.83m b) 63.12m

c) 77.14m d) 50.72m

Solution : Option D

Explanation:

Let AB is the hill and CD is the tower.

In ΔABC, tan 600 = AB/AC ⇒√3 = 120/AC ⇒ AC = 120/√3 = 40√3

Now AC = DE = 40√3m

In ΔBED, tan 450 = BE/ED ⇒ 1 ⇒ BE = ED

∴ BE = 40√3m

47
∴ AE = 120 - 40√3 = 120 – 69.28 = 50.72m

The height of the tower = 50.72m

4. Two boats are sailing in the sea on the two opposite sides of a light house 50m high. The
angles of elevation of the top of the light house observed from the ships are 300 and
450 respectively. Find the distance between the two ships.

a) 136.6m b) 142.8m

c) 150.4m d) 122.8m

Solution : Option A

Explanation:

: Let AB is the light house of height 50m and the ships are at C & D making angles 300 and

450 respectively.

In ΔABC, tan 300 = AB/BC ⇒ 1/√3 = 50/BC ⇒ BC = 50√3m

In ΔABD, tan 450 = AB/BD ⇒ 1 = 50/BD = 50m

48
∴ The distance between the ships = CD = CB + BD = 50√3 + 50 = 50 ( √3+1)m

= 50 × 2.732 = 136.6m

5. A man 1.5m tall is 10√3m away from the pole. The angle of elevation from his eye to the top
of the tower is 600. Find the height of the tower.

a) 31.5m b) 36.7m

c) 24.8m d) 28.6m

Solution : Option A

Explanation:

Let AB is the man and CD is the tower.

49
Here ∠DBE = 600

In ΔBED, tan 600 = DE/BE

⇒ √3 = DE/10√3

⇒ DE = 10√3 × √3 = 30m

So the height of the tower is DC

= DE + EC = 30 + 1.5 = 31.5m

6. When the sun’s altitude changes from 300 to 600, the length of the shadow of a building
decreases by 40m. What is the height of the building?

a) 22√3 b) 15√3

c) 16√2 d) 20√3

Solution : Option D

Explanation:

Let AB is the building of height x and the shadow of the tree changed from AC to AD where CD

50
= 40m

In ΔABD, tan 600 = AB/AD

⇒ √3 = x/AD ⇒ AD = x/√3

In ΔACB, tan 300 = AB/AC

⇒ 1/√3 (x/√3 + 40) = x

⇒ x/3 + 40/√3 = x ⇒ 40/√3 = x -x/3

⇒ 40/√3 = 2x/3

⇒ x = (40×3)/2√3 = 20√3m

7. A man standing at a point A, observes that the angles of elevation of two planes one vertically
above the other are 600 and 300. If the higher plane is 1200m from the ground, find the vertical
distance between the two planes.

a) 650m b) 800m

c) 900√3m d) 1000√3m

Solution : Option B

Explanation:

51
Let the planes are at points C and D and ∠CAB = 300, ∠DAB = 600

In ΔABD, tan 600 = BD/AB ⇒ √3 = 1200/AB ⇒ AB = 1200/√3 = 400√3m

In ΔABC, tan 300 = BC/AB ⇒ 1/√3 = BC/400√3 ⇒ BC=400m

∴ The distance between the planes = CD = 1200 – 400 = 800m.

8. A tower is surmounted by a vertical flag post of height 20m. At a point on the ground, the
angle of elevation of the bottom and the top of the flag post are 300 and 600 respectively. Find
the height of the tower.

a) 10m b) 12m

c) 16m d) 18m

Solution : Option A

Explanation:

52
Let AB is the tower of height x m and BC is the flag post of height 20m.

In ΔABD, tan 300 = AB/AD ⇒ 1/√3 = x/AD ⇒ AD = √3x ---(1)

In ΔADC, tan 600 = AC/AD ⇒ √3 = (x + 20)/AD ⇒ AD = (x + 20)/√3 ---(2)

From (1) & (2) we have

(x + 20)/√3 = √3x

⇒ x + 20 = 3x

⇒ 2x = 20

⇒ x = 10m

∴ The height of the tower is 10m.

9. A balloon leaves from a point A vertically upward at uniform speed. A man standing 200m
away from point A observes the angle of elevation of the balloon to be 600 after 3 minutes. Find
the speed of the balloon.

a) 2.423m/s b) 1.924m/s

c) 1.863m/s d) 2.875m/s

Solution : Option B

Explanation:

53
Let the man is standing at point C, so ∠ACB = 600.

In ΔACB, tan 600 = AB/AC ⇒ √3 = AB/200

⇒ AB = 200√3 = 200 × 1.732 = 346.4m

∴ The balloon covered 346.4m in 180 sec.

∴ The speed of balloon = 346.4/180 = 1.924 m/s

10. The angles of depression and elevation of the top of a building 15m high from the top and
bottom of a tower are 600 and 300 respectively. Find the height of the tower

a) 40m b) 50m

c) 60m d) 80m

Solution : Option C

Explanation:

Let AB is the tower and CD is the building of height 15m

54
∴CD = AE = 15m

In ΔACD, tan 300 = CD/AC ⇒ 1/√3 = 15/AC

⇒ AC = 15√3m

∴ DE = 15√3m

Again in ΔBED, tan 600 = BE/ED

⇒ √3 = BE/15√3

⇒ BE = 45m

The height of the tower = AB = AE + EB = 15 + 45

= 60m
