Product Descriptions
Geolog – Paradigm 18 is a component of Paradigm’s Reservoir Characterization and
Petrophysics suite.
Geolog is the world's leading well data processing and analysis software package. Geolog gives
you the freedom to store and process well bore data easily and efficiently within a flexible and
connectible software environment. Geolog incorporates state of the art graphical displays and
utilizes the most advanced analysis techniques for geological modeling through to complex
petrophysical interpretation. Geolog is a totally integrated package which consists of various
specialized modules.
The Paradigm Name Service (PNS) is a key part of Paradigm 18 Services software. It is the
launcher and controller of the Epos Data Servers and Utility Servers. PNS provides Epos with
security control and data access across heterogeneous multi-user networks.
The Well Database Service (a Paradigm 18 Service) provides access to well data stored in
Geolog and some third-party repository formats.
The Third-Party Data Server package allows for connection to third-party databases, for
example OpenWorks, GeoFrame and Recall which contain well data.
This chapter describes the prerequisites, supported platforms, required disk space, and
hardware and software requirements for running your Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 package.
Overview
Before beginning the installation, ensure that your system meets the software and hardware
requirements for running your Geolog – Paradigm 18 package, including the required memory
and minimum swap file size and disk space. Required and available disk space for the
installation and configuration you’ve selected is automatically checked again during the
installation procedure.
Supported Platforms
Your Geolog – Paradigm 18 package can be run on the platforms listed in the table below.
Note
• To develop and compile programs using Loglan, the Microsoft
Visual Studio 2015 or 2017 (Profession, Enterprise or Community)
compilers, with the “Desktop development with C++” option
enabled must be installed.
• The default GCC compilers under RHEL 6.8 upwards and RHEL 7.1
upwards can be used to compile Loglans.
• Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 creates a dependency on the
Universal CRT when applications are built by using the Windows 10
Software Development Kit. You may need to install the Visual
Studio 2017 64-bit redistributable or the “Update for Universal C
Runtime in Windows” on Windows 7 or Windows 8 platforms to
enable Geolog to run correctly.
This chapter describes the procedure for installing Geolog. The installation procedure is
intended for system administrators or other personnel familiar with Linux or Windows systems
and local site requirements. The procedures for installing Python are also detailed.
Overview
Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 can be used either stand-alone or sharing the Epos infrastructure and
third-party services with other Paradigm applications.
Once Geolog – Paradigm 18 has been installed on a Windows platform, the Geolog to Petrel
Connector, Geolog-Link plug-in can be installed. The MSI installer together with the

Overview
Paradigm products are licensed and managed by means of the FlexNet Publisher License
Server Manager (formerly known as FLEXlm) version 11.14.1. The installation and
administration of the license server is described in the FlexNet Publisher License
Administration Guide from Flexera Software.
At runtime, a Paradigm License Service must be running and accessible. The environment
variable PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE must be set to either the location of the license file if the
service is installed locally, or the <port>@<server> setting for the computer running the
service.
The service setup should be done after Geolog is installed.
License Preferences
A common preference file is expected to exist in your home area ({HOME}/.PG_GEOLOG directory
on Linux and {APPDATA}/Roaming/Paradigm directory on Windows}) entitled geolog.spec. This
file contains information about the current project, the Epos user and the license preference. If
this file does not exist or a license preference entry is not contained in this file, the following
screen will be displayed when Geolog is launched.
License Borrowing

This chapter provides an overview of the help provided with your Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 help
package. It also describes navigating the help and printing hard copies.
Overview
It is expected that Geolog documentation will have been installed as part of the Paradigm
Documentation package or via the Geolog Documentation package (for stand-alone Geolog
installations).
If the former, then no configuration is required before accessing the documentation. If the
latter, no further configuration is required if the package was installed into the Geolog
installation directory. If however, the Geolog Documentation has been installed elsewhere on
the network, then the environment variable PG_ONLINE_HELP should be configured to point
to this location and the environment variable PG_GEOLOG_HELP_SUFFIX should be modified
from its default value of “/geolog/doc/helpset”.
Example
• set env(PG_ONLINE_HELP) http://<documentation installation URL> OR
• set env(PG_ONLINE_HELP) file://<UNC path to documentation installation>
• set env(PG_GEOLOG_HELP_SUFFIX) /doc/helpset
• Clicking Help on the menu bar displays the list of relevant help options:
Click on To
Help Display the help for the currently selected view (e.g. clicking Help
with a Well Catalog view open will display the help for Well
Catalog).
On Applicationname Display the help for that application (e.g. On Project will display
the Project help).
On Geolog Display the entire Geolog help.
Version Display information about the software.
• Pressing F1 during command execution displays the relevant help topic. When a command
is being executed (for example, when inserting picks in a layout) the cursor changes to a
pencil.

This appendix provides helpful information regarding problems you may encounter when
installing your Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 package.
Windows Issues
• It is possible that license files may not include the port number. The port number is the last
number at the end of the first line of the license file and should be "7507". If it is missing, the
port number will default to 27000. This is indicated in the FlexNet debug log stored in the
license.log file. If 7507 is missing in the file, it should be added to the end of the first line,
and the License Service should be restarted.
• Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 creates a dependency in the Universal CRT when applications
are built by using the Windows 10 Software Development Kit. You may need to install the
Visual Studio 2017 64-bit redistributable or the “Update for Universal C Runtime in
Windows” on Windows 7 or Windows 8 platforms to enable Geolog to run correctly.
Linux Issues
• Under RHEL 6 there is a new naming convention for the devices. The Ethernet device is now
em1 instead of eth0. This particularly affects the current versions of FlexNet. Refer to the
Knowledge Base at http://www.pdgm.com/support (id 7410) if you need information on
how to circumvent the problem.
• A PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader is required for viewing PDF format
documentation files as well as PDF format report files created by the Geolog application. If
a default viewer has not been installed the following error message will be displayed:
Error: Unable to find program to view PDF file
See “Viewing PDF format documentation files” on page 55 for further information.
• For RHEL 7, systems that are going to be running the FlexNet license daemon require the
symbolic link /lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3 to be present. This link is created when the
redhat-lsb RPMs are installed - the "Linux Standard Base". However, it is not necessary to
install the entire LSB and its dependencies; instead you can create the link using the
following command (as root):
ln -s /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 /lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3
If the link is missing, daemons do not run and the following error message is displayed:
Bad ELF Interpreter: No such file or directory
