administration of the license server is described in the FlexNet Publisher License
Administration Guide from Flexera Software.
At runtime, a Paradigm License Service must be running and accessible. The environment
variable PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE must be set to either the location of the license file if the
service is installed locally, or the <port>@<server> setting for the computer running the
service.
The service setup should be done after Geolog is installed.

License Preferences
A common preference file is expected to exist in your home area ({HOME}/.PG_GEOLOG directory
on Linux and {APPDATA}/Roaming/Paradigm directory on Windows}) entitled geolog.spec. This
file contains information about the current project, the Epos user and the license preference. If
this file does not exist or a license preference entry is not contained in this file, the following
screen will be displayed when Geolog is launched.

Essential Configuration

This chapter details the basic and essential configuration of a site to correctly use Geolog. See
“Configuration” in the Environment help documentation for more detailed information on
configuring your environment.

Linux Configuration

Creating a Startup Script / Setting up the Path

Commands are located on the disk by traversing a search path which is defined as the user’s
environment variable PATH. There is only one command that needs to be found on the path
and that is the Geolog launch command. This may be a startup script which you have created
or it may be the “geolog” command itself, found in <Paradigm root directory>/geolog18.0/
bin.
It is not essential to create a Geolog startup script, but it is convenient at sites with many users,
or where the “site” directory is not in the default location, or where other vendor startup
scripts are collected together in a single location that is already on the PATH for every user. A
minimal Geolog startup script need contain only one command: <Paradigm root directory>/
geolog18.0/bin/geolog. Optionally, the startup script may contain a setting for some
environment variables, such as PG_SITE. Other variables may include PG_UNIT_SYSTEM,
PG_PROJECTS, PNS_HOST and PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE (see below) but these are more
usually defined in $env(PG_SITE)/bin/geolog_env.tcl.

Creating a Site Directory

The site directory is a special Geolog project which contains customized files to suit a particular
site, supplying default parameters to all users at the site. This is normally managed by a specific
site user. The following setup should be performed by that site user.
Steps 1 If the following site directories and project files have not been created from a previous
release of Geolog, then:
% cd <Paradigm root directory>

Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 | 46 | Installation Guide

Essential Configuration

% mkdir -p site/data site/layouts site/plots site/specs site/reports site/

graphics
After creating the site path, Geolog needs to be informed of the location of this path. This is
done by setting the environment variable, PG_SITE. However, if the site directory is in the
default location, i.e. in the same directory as the geolog18.0 directory, then PG_SITE does
not need to be set. If a startup script is created for Geolog then it is convenient to set the
environment variable, PG_SITE within that startup script. Otherwise, set PG_SITE in the
user’s environment for each Geolog user as follows:
2 Edit the .login,.profile or .bash_profile file as follows:
• If the login shell is C-Shell, then edit the .login file; if the Bourne or Korn Shell is used,
edit the .profile file; if bash is used, edit the .bash_profile file.
• To set the correct site in the .login file, add this line:
setenv PG_SITE <Paradigm root directory>/site
• To set the correct site in the .profile or .bash_profile file, add these lines:
PG_SITE=<Paradigm root directory>/site
export PG_SITE
3 Log out and log in again to source the new environment.

Setting Units
Geolog has three unit categories: Imperial, Metric and Mixed.
The default unit system is Imperial. If a metric or mixed unit system is preferred, then some
customization of your environment is required.

Set the unit category for your site

Steps 1 Create or edit the file <Paradigm root directory>/site/bin/geolog_env.tcl.
2 Create a line that contains:
set env(PG_UNIT_SYSTEM) value where "value" is metric, imperial or mixed.
For example: set env(PG_UNIT_SYSTEM) mixed
3 When a unit system is defined in the geolog_env.tcl file located in the site/bin area, then
that unit system is used by all projects. Although NOT recommended, if it is necessary to
use a different unit system for a particular project, then:
• that project must contain a local bin/geolog_env.tcl file which contains the definition
of PG_UNIT_SYSTEM environment variable;
and
• Geolog must be started from that local project level.

Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 | 47 | Installation Guide

Essential Configuration

Alternative method for setting the unit category

The preferred units may also be set externally from Geolog using the environment variable
PG_UNIT_SYSTEM. For example, to set metric units:
• % setenv PG_UNIT_SYSTEM metric
When Geolog starts up, preferred units are determined by:
• PG_UNIT_SYSTEM, if it has been set;
• if no preferred units have been set, the default is imperial.

Licensing
Copy the license file provided by Paradigm into your <Paradigm root directory>/site
directory and name it pgeo.dat. See “Linux FlexNet License Server Setup” on page 40 for
information about configuring a license service. Alternatively set the environment variable
PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE as described below:

Set the license location for your site

Steps 1 Create or edit the file <Paradigm root directory>/site/bin/geolog_env.tcl.
2 Create a line that contains:
set env(PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE) <port>@<server>

Alternative method for setting the license location

The license location may also be set externally from Geolog using the environment variable
PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE. For example:
• % setenv PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE 7507@ice

Windows Configuration

Creating a Site Subdirectory

The site directory is a special Geolog project which contains customized files to suit a particular
site, supplying default parameters to all users at the site.
If the following site directories and project files have not been created from a previous release
of Geolog, then:
Steps 1 Open Windows Explorer.

Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 | 48 | Installation Guide

Essential Configuration

2 Under the <Paradigm root directory>\site (e.g. c:\paradigm\site) directory, create the
following directories:
data
graphics
layouts
plots
reports
specs

Setting Units
Geolog has three unit categories: Imperial, Metric and Mixed.
The default unit system is imperial. If a metric or mixed unit system is preferred, then some
customization of your environment is required.

Set the unit category for your site

Steps 1 Create or edit the file <Paradigm root directory>\site\bin\geolog_env.tcl.
2 Create a line that contains:
set env(PG_UNIT_SYSTEM) value where “value” is metric, imperial or mixed.
For example: set env(PG_UNIT_SYSTEM) mixed
3 When a unit system is defined in the geolog_env.tcl file located in the site\bin area, then
that unit system is used by all projects. Although NOT recommended, if it is necessary to
use a different unit system for a particular project, then:
• that project must contain a local bin\geolog_env.tcl file which contains the definition
of PG_UNIT_SYSTEM environment variable.
and
• Geolog must be started from that local project level.

Alternative method for setting the unit category

The preferred units may also be set externally from Geolog using the environment variable
PG_UNIT_SYSTEM. For example, to set metric units:
Steps 1 Select Control Panel > System.
2 Click the Advanced Tab, click the Environment Variables button and then click the New
button.
3 Enter PG_UNIT_SYSTEM into the Variable entry box.
4 Enter metric into the Value entry box.
5 Click Set (or OK).

Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 | 49 | Installation Guide

Essential Configuration

When Geolog starts up, preferred units are determined by:

• PG_UNIT_SYSTEM, if it has been set;
• if no preferred units have been set, the default is imperial.

Licensing
Copy the license file provided by Paradigm into your <Paradigm root directory>\site
directory and name it pgeo.dat. See “Windows FlexNet License Service Setup” on page 42 for
information about installing and starting a license service. Alternatively set the environment
variable PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE as described below:

Set the license location for your site

Steps 1 Create or edit the file <Paradigm root directory>\site\bin\geolog_env.tcl.
2 Create a line that contains:
set env(PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE) <port>@<server>

Alternative method for setting the license location

The license location may also be set externally from Geolog using the environment variable
PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE. For example:
Steps 1 Select Control Panel > System.
2 Click the Advanced Tab, click the Environment Variables button and then click the New
button.
3 Enter PRDM_GEO_LICENSE_FILE into the Variable entry box.
4 Enter <port>@<server> into the Value entry box (for example 7507@ice).
5 Click Set (or OK).

Online Help

This chapter provides an overview of the help provided with your Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 help
package. It also describes navigating the help and printing hard copies.

Overview
It is expected that Geolog documentation will have been installed as part of the Paradigm
Documentation package or via the Geolog Documentation package (for stand-alone Geolog
installations).
If the former, then no configuration is required before accessing the documentation. If the
latter, no further configuration is required if the package was installed into the Geolog
installation directory. If however, the Geolog Documentation has been installed elsewhere on
the network, then the environment variable PG_ONLINE_HELP should be configured to point
to this location and the environment variable PG_GEOLOG_HELP_SUFFIX should be modified
from its default value of “/geolog/doc/helpset”.

Example
• set env(PG_ONLINE_HELP) http://<documentation installation URL> OR
• set env(PG_ONLINE_HELP) file://<UNC path to documentation installation>
• set env(PG_GEOLOG_HELP_SUFFIX) /doc/helpset

Requirements for Viewing Online Help

To view the Geolog Help, you must have a Windows or Linux computer running a supported
browser with Java Script enabled. If Java Script is not enabled, then the Help system will not
display correctly. To find out if Java Script is enabled, consult the browser’s options.
On Linux computers, the help automatically opens in major web browsers such as Mozilla
Firefox. On a Windows computer, the help opens in a Geolog specific browser. On a Windows
computer if the help is launched from a local drive the Geolog browser will avoid potential
security restriction messages regarding active content or secure/unsecure items that may be
displayed if Internet Explorer is the default browser.
On a Windows computer you can choose to leave the Geolog browser as the default web
browser or change to another browser such as Internet Explorer.

Security Restrictions When Accessing Help from Internet Explorer

When you launch the help from your local drive, you may get warnings from Internet Explorer
regarding active content or secure/unsecure items. You can approve these messages without
concern by clicking on the message in the Information bar, selecting Allow Blocked Content,
and acknowledging to run active content.

Set IE as the default web browser for the Geolog help

Step 1 In the site or project bin/geolog_env.tcl file set the environment variable PG_BROWSER to
the installation location of the required browser.
For example:
set env(PG_BROWSER) C:/PROGRA~1/INTERN~1/iexplore.exe
Note The short Windows file name syntax is required.
You also need a PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader installed for viewing the hard copy
format or PDF of the help.

Viewing PDF format documentation files

Your Linux installation may not contain an Adobe Portable Document Reader by default.
Geolog attempts to connect to known defaults (evince and ocular), but if this is unsuccessful
the following error message will be output to the feedback window when an attempt is made
to open a PDF file:
Error: Unable to find program to view PDF file
In this event, consult your System Administrator with regard to installing a PDF viewer. For
example, on RHEL 6.0 update 4 the installation package for evince is evince-2.28.2-
14.el6_0.1.x86_64 and for okular is kdegraphics-4.3.4-6.el6.x86_64. On RHEL 7.0 the

A
Troubleshooting

This appendix provides helpful information regarding problems you may encounter when
installing your Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 package.

Windows Issues
• It is possible that license files may not include the port number. The port number is the last
number at the end of the first line of the license file and should be "7507". If it is missing, the
port number will default to 27000. This is indicated in the FlexNet debug log stored in the
license.log file. If 7507 is missing in the file, it should be added to the end of the first line,
and the License Service should be restarted.
• Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 creates a dependency in the Universal CRT when applications
are built by using the Windows 10 Software Development Kit. You may need to install the
Visual Studio 2017 64-bit redistributable or the “Update for Universal C Runtime in
Windows” on Windows 7 or Windows 8 platforms to enable Geolog to run correctly.

Linux Issues
• Under RHEL 6 there is a new naming convention for the devices. The Ethernet device is now
em1 instead of eth0. This particularly affects the current versions of FlexNet. Refer to the
Knowledge Base at http://www.pdgm.com/support (id 7410) if you need information on
how to circumvent the problem.
• A PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader is required for viewing PDF format
documentation files as well as PDF format report files created by the Geolog application. If
a default viewer has not been installed the following error message will be displayed:
Error: Unable to find program to view PDF file
See “Viewing PDF format documentation files” on page 55 for further information.

Geolog® – Paradigm® 18 | 60 | Installation Guide

Troubleshooting

• For RHEL 7, systems that are going to be running the FlexNet license daemon require the
symbolic link /lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3 to be present. This link is created when the
redhat-lsb RPMs are installed - the "Linux Standard Base". However, it is not necessary to
install the entire LSB and its dependencies; instead you can create the link using the
following command (as root):
ln -s /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 /lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3
If the link is missing, daemons do not run and the following error message is displayed:
Bad ELF Interpreter: No such file or directory
