How to select a fan?

How to select a fan?

The products brochure presents high-pressure, medium-pressure and special versions of centrifugal fans produced by Nyborg –
Mawent. The brochure was so prepared to enable every user to promptly and correctly select the equipment according to required
technical parameters. For precise selection of a fan, please define your needs using the selection path, which, at the same time, is
the description of each piece of equipment presented in the brochure.

Selection path of a fan

1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Type of fan Size Version Drive Layout Motor Accessories

1 Type of fan
To choose a type of fan you shall define:
- the purpose of a fan (see Application)
- properties of a medium pressed: allowable dust content (g/m3), maximum temperature of a medium
K (°C) (see Application)
- key work parameters: output Qv [m3/s] and pressure increase ΔPc [Pa], which determine the point of fan’s operation
at the collective performance chart for all types of centrifugal fans (see pages A to E)

2 Sizes
You can determine the size of a given fan using the flow characteristics charts of fans (see Characteristics).
The characteristics present total pressure increase within a volume output function for a given size and rotary speed of
a fan and medium’s density of 1.2 kg/m3. The point of maximum output as well as fan’s maximum power consumption
is indicated at the flow characteristic charts. One chart, on which performance characteristics for available fans of
given parameters are indicated, presents one fan’s size.
- The type of impeller
- Rotary speed of fan’s impeller (rpm)
- Maximum power consumption of a fan (kW)
- Level of acoustic pressure dB (A)
- Type of motor
- Power rating of motor (kW)

A fan of such size shall be selected, for which a preset work point contains in the optimal area of a given characteristics
– (it overlays or approximates).

3 Version
Depending on functional needs, properties and a temperature of pressed medium as well as on a type of work
environment, you can choose a ST standard version fan (where the key assemblies as: impeller, casing, foundation of
drive unit are made of mild carbon steel) or in SP special versions available:
C – heat-resistant, K – corrosion-resistant, CK – heat/corrosion-resistant, WAL – with aluminium impeller, WALK - with
aluminium impeller and corrosion-resistant casing made of increased corrosion resistance steel, Ex – explosion-proof
of special construction, applicable for use in areas of explosion hazard confirmed with ATEX certificate: EX II2G c IIBT4
– detailed description at the page 103.

How to select a fan?

4 Drive
Similar as in STEP 3, taking the version, particular functional needs, properties of a pressed medium and the work
environment into account, you shall select a drive type available: NAP 1: direct drive, NAP 2: indirect drive through
a belt gear, NAP 4: indirect drive through coupling.

5 Layout
You shall select a position of a fan’s outlet connection. Most of fans of particular series of types are available for eight
positions of outlet connection: RDO, RD90, RD180, RD270, LGO, LG90, LG180 and LG270.

6 Motor
Each fan is equipped in a given, standard ST motor of preset parameters (see Characteristics) For non-standard
versions, special construction SP motors are selected – e.g. for explosion-proof version of a fan, an explosion-proof
motor is applied. Select available type of motor.

7 Accessories
Depending on needs, the fan can be supplemented with accessories available: W – Inspection manhole, O – Draining
stub, IA - Acoustic insulation, S - Protective net.

Code of fan
Following the selection path allows you to select a particular fan from our offer.
It is as easy as filling in the empty fields in the code diagram (points 1 to 7 – “seven steps”) entering selected options for a selected
fan’s type in the appropriate places. The fan’s standard code received this way enables prompt and precise order of the selected
equipment. For submitting an inquiry, you can use an INQUIRY form, printed in the final section of the brochure, at the page 107.
Please, fill it in and send it:
by fax to: +48 55 646 63 09
by e-mail to: office@nyborg-mawent.com

on-line at www.nyborg-mawent.com

Non-standard fans
In case of non-standard fans or any problems with selecting a fan, please contact our Technical and Commercial Consultant, who
will help you with the selection of right equipment. Please, read the INQUIRY form and, if possible, fill in the data required for the
preparation of offer and selection of appropriate equipment.

High–pressure WPO fans

Application
WPO fans find their application in industry and construction. They are meant for
pressing inert media in ventilation systems, process lines, air supply systems and
compressed-air transportation, if a transport of materials does not go through the
impeller. They are used for achieving high pressure increases with low output of
pressed media.
The properties of pressed medium for standard versions of fans:
it cannot contain aggressive and explosive substances
allowable dust content - 0.3 g/m3
medium’s temperature may not exceed:
- 313 K (40°C) - for fans with direct drive (NAP1)
- 373 K (100°C) - for fans with indirect drive (NAP4)
For pressed media of different properties, special versions WPO fans shall be used:
heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant and heat/corrosion-resistant.

SPECIAL FANS
Roof-mounted WD fans

Application
WD fans are meant for exhaust of air or other inert gas and steam from residential and
industrial facilities. Usually, they are installed vertically on the buildings’ roofs. Roof-
mounted fans feature high technical and operational parameters and high durability
and reliability during the operation.
The properties of pressed medium for standard versions of fans:
it cannot contain aggressive and explosive substances
allowable dust content - 0.1 g/m3
medium’s temperature may not exceed 313 K (40°C)
A fan’s casing is made of thin mild carbon steel in a cylindrical shape with system
connecting flange. Inlet funnel is installed in the casing to improve the air supply to
the impeller wheel. Within a range of special versions for exhaust of media containing
corrosion accelerating agents, it is possible to produce fans made of aluminium
alloys.

Silencers

T-20÷50 and TR-20÷50 Silencers

for general-purpose axial-flow and centrifugal fans

Application
Silencers without core of T-20÷50 type and with core of TR-20÷50 type are meant for the reduction of noise produced by axial-
flow and centrifugal fans and transmitted through ventilation installation. They can be mounted directly to axial-flow and suction
stubs of centrifugal fans and through profile adaptors to pressing stubs of centrifugal fans. They can be also mounted in the outlet
ventilation ducts from ventilation rooms or sound absorbing fan casings. The silencers’ series of types compose of:
silencers without core of T-20÷50 type with drills for light flange
silencers without core of T-20÷50 type with drills for heavy flange
silencers with core of TR-20÷50 type with drills for light flange
silencers with core of TR-20÷50 type with drills for heavy flange
Standard version silencers shall be applied if the temperature of pressed inert media does not exceed 353K (80°C), and dust content
is lower than 0.5 g/m3. We offer special versions as listed below:
kcorrosion–resistant for pressing media containing corrosion accelerating agents. Medium’s temperature may not exceed:

Silencers may operate in vertical and horizontal position and they do not require orientation towards the flow direction during the
assembly.

Silencer sizes
Inlet and outlet openings of silencers with and without core correspond to the nominal diameters of fans: 200, 250, 315, 400 and 500
mm. Flange connection drilling, diameters and weights are given in the drg. 1 and 2, and a table 1.

Construction description
Noise silences comprise of appropriately shaped elements, made of steel, plain and perforated plates, covered with glass textile. The
elements are filled with mineral wool. Anti-corrosion protection – depending on needs, they can be painted with general-purpose
paints, thermal-resistant enamel, hot zinc-galvanised or painted with other types of paints, as per the customer’s demand.

Marking example
Silencers are marked with symbols denominating their types and characteristic values.
Markings:
T - silencer
R - silencer with core;
liczba - number – inlet/outlet opening diameter in cm (size)
A marking example of core silencer of size 40 with drilling for a light flange: TR-40 with light drilling

In your order you shall specify

the type,
size of silencer,
drilling for light/heavy flange,
and, additionally, for special versions you shall specify:
- corrosion-resistant version,
- heat-resistant or heat/corrosion-resistant version.

Flow resistance coefficient, which is the relation of pressure loss Δp to dynamic pressure Pd for silencers without core of 25, 40, 50
and 31.5 mm size is 0.3; for silencers with core – 1.1. The silencer of size 20 has a higher flow resistance coefficient and for a silencer
without core it is 0.7; with core – 1.4.

Definitions and formulas relating to fans

Volume output of fan Qv – it is a volume of medium flowing in a time unit through an inlet plane of a fan, defining simultaneously
pressure, temperature and humidity values to which the medium’s volume refers
Qv = C1 ⋅ A1 = C2 ⋅ A2 [m3/s]
C1, C2 – average velocity in an inlet or outlet section of a fan [m/s; m/min;m/h],
A1, A2 – inlet or outlet section of a fan [m2].

Increase of total pressure Δpc – it is a total of static and dynamic pressure increase
Δpc = Δpc2 + Δpc1 [Pa]

Increase of static pressure Δps– it is a difference of average static pressure increase, absolute or relative, in an inlet or outlet
plane of a fan
Δps = Δps2 – Δps1 [Pa]

Increase of dynamic pressure Δpd – it is a difference of average dynamic pressure increase in an inlet or outlet plane of
a fan
Δpd = pd2 – pd1 =

C2 – C1 ( )
Power rating of fan N – it is a power transmitted to a fan’s shaft including the power used for driving the equipment related to
a drive shaft of a fan and overcoming friction losses in bearings
Q ⋅ Δp
N = v 3 c [kW]
10 ⋅ η

Capacity of fan – it is a relation of fan’s efficiency power to its power rating

Qv ⋅ Δpc N
η= = u
103 ⋅ N N
η – it shall be inserted into the formula as a decimal fraction , e.g. η=0,8.

Rotations of impeller n – it is a number of rotations made by a defined point of an impeller in a time unit [s-1]
ω = 2π ⋅ n [rad/s]
Angle velocity of impeller ω – it is an angle by which a defined point of an impeller will rotate in a time unit

Peripheral velocity of fan u - it is a linear velocity of fan’s impeller’s points moving along in-line circles with rotation axle

d

Aerodynamic characteristics of fans

Aerodynamic characteristics of a fan it is presented as a chart, a group of dependences of total pressure increase, power rating and
a capacity of a fan on its output at a defined rotational speed of impeller and a density of pressed medium.
Δpc = ρg(Qv) N = ρg(Qv) ηc= ρg(Qv) for n=const. ρ=const.

Knowing a flow characteristics of one fan from a series of types of geometrically similar fans, you are able to determine a

The characteristics presented in the brochure were determined for medium’s density of p=1,2 kg/m3 at the pressure of 1013 hPa,
at the temperature of 293K= 20oC and relative humidity of ϕ=50%. For other medium’s density ϕ≠1,2 kg/m3 or other temperature
at the inlet T’≠293 K, the value Δpc read from the characteristics and maximum required power Nmax given in the table shall be
adjusted acc. to the formula:
ρ’ ρ’ 293 p’
Δpc’ = Δpc ⋅ [Pa] N’max = Nmax ⋅ [kW] ρ = 1,2 ⋅ [kg/m3]
ρ ρ T’ 1013

T’ - absolute temperature
p’ – absolute pressure

Noise level of fans

Noise arising during the operation of fans is of mechanical and aerodynamical nature and depends on the flow parameters of
a fan. Noise is determined by an acoustic power defined as an amount of acoustic power produced by a sound source in a time
unit.

The allowable noise level, acc. to PN-72/M43120, is determined by a formula:

R
LA = LpA – 10 – 20 log
Ro
LpA – adjusted level of acoustic power
R – measurement radius [m]
Ro – reference measurement radius Ro = 1m

Allowable value of adjusted acoustic power level (acc. to characteristics A) is defined by PN-80/M-43122 standard and determined
by a formula:
Q Δpc
LpA = 10 ⋅ log v + 22,5 ⋅ log + Lw [dB/A]
Qvo Δpco
Qv – fan’s output
Δpc - reference pressure increase
Qvo – fan’s total pressure increase [l/m/s]
Δpco – reference output [l/Pa]
Lw [dB(A)]– the highest value of reduced and adjusted acoustic power level of a fan in a nominal or optimal point of operation.

Acc. to PN-80/M-43122:
Lw – 35 dB(A) – 1 class of noise level for axial-flow fans
Lw – 25 dB(A) – 2 class of noise level for centrifugal fans

Note: Measured (actual) noise level LApom is lower than given in the acoustic power tables LpA for:
- axial-flow fans LApom = LpA 4÷11 dB(A)
- centrifugal fans LApom = LpA – 23÷30 dB(A)

Examples of fans’ selection

Example 1
1
Selection of a two-speed axial-flow fan n2 = ⋅n , for which the parameters at the first speed (n1) are Q v1 = 1,6 m 3/s,
2 1
Δpc = 815 Pa

A fan is meant for pressing air within the temperature ranges from T=293K to T’=243K, i.e. from 20oC to –30oC. Determine parameters
for T’=243K for the operation at the first and second speed.
From the brochure you shall select a fan of WOMS-040/04 type, whose parameters at n1=2910 rpm correspond to required ones.
Maximum required power Nmax=2,13 kW.
Determine the fan’s parameters for n1=2910 rpm and =243K, using the formulas:
ρ’ ρ’ ρ’ T’ p’1 293
Δpc’ = Δpc ⋅ = 815 ⋅ 1,206 = 995 Pa N’max= Nmax ⋅ = 2,13 ⋅ 1,206 = 2,57 kW = ⋅ = = 1,206
ρ ρ ρ T'1 p1 243

Parameters of fans operating at the second speed (n2):

n2 = 0,5 n1 = 1455 rpm T2 = T1’ = 243K
can be determined from the following formulas:
n2 1455
Qv2 = Qv1 ⋅ = 1,6 ⋅ = 0,8 m3/s
n1 2910

n2 2 2
Nmax = N’max ( )
n1
= 2,57 ( )
1455
2910
= 0,321 kW

2 2
Δpc2 = Δpc1 ( nn ) = 995 (1455
2
1 2910)
= 249 Pa

Selection of a motor
Acc. to BN-71/1388-03, the motor shall have 8÷14% of excess rated power than required power:
Ns = (1,08 + 1,14) Nmax
Ns = 1,12 ⋅ Nmax1 = 1,12 ⋅ 2,57 = 2,89 kW

Select, e.g. Two-speed motor of mSSKf100L-2/4B type, produced by “Tamel” factory in Tarnow.

Example 2
Select centrifugal fan for given parameters:
Qv = 4 m3/s i Δpc= 1100 ± 20 Pa

Fans, which correspond to the above parameters:

1. WWOax-63 for impeller rotation nw=960 rpm, for which the maximum power requirement is Nmax=6,4 kW.
2. WPS-50 for impeller rotation nw=1450 rpm, for which the maximum power requirement is Nmax=5,7 kW.
For economical reasons, a WPS-50 fan shall be selected, which has a lower power consumption than WWOax-63 fan.

ATEX
Characteristics and application
of explosion-proof fans

Explosion-proof fans are meant for operation in potentially explosive areas, where explosive atmospheres may exist – mixtures of air
and hazardous gas, steam, mist and dust.
Most of the fans in the NYBORG – MAWENT offer have an explosion-proof version, maintaining at the same time all the parameters
of their standard versions. Their construction was modified to ensure safety in the event of excessive temperature, arcs and electric
sparks arise, both, inside of the fan’s casing and at the its exterior parts during normal operation. Non-sparking materials and electric
motors in explosion-proof versions were applied.

1. Directives/Ordinances.
In case of potentially explosive areas and equipment meant for operation in such zones two basic ATEX Directives are to be
observed:
94/9/WE – the Ordinance of the Minister of Economy dated 22 December, 2005 on key requirements for protective equipment and
systems destined for use in potentially explosive areas – applies to producers of explosion-proof device, related to safety.
1999/92/WE – the Ordinance of Minister of Labour and Social Policy dated 29 may, 2003, on minimal requirements related to work
safety and hygiene of personnel employed at positions where potentially explosive atmosphere may arise – applies to producers
of explosion-proof device, related to the classification of potentially explosive area.

2. Area classification.
The potentially explosive area (zone) (explosive atmosphere) – is a mixture of flammable substances in a form of gasses, steams,
mists (G marking) or dusts (D marking) with air in the atmospheric conditions of the temperature within the scope of -20÷+60°C and
pressure within the scope of 0,8÷1,1bar.
Zone 0 - area, where potentially explosive area consisting of the mixture of flammable substances in a form of gas, steam or mist
(G) with air maintains permanently, for extended periods of time or occurs frequently
Zone 1 - area, where there is a probability that potentially explosive area consisting of the mixture of flammable substances in a
form of gas, steam or mists (G) with air will occur occasionally during normal operations.
Zone 2 – area, where there is a low probability that potentially explosive area consisting of the mixture of flammable substances
in a form of gas, steam or mist (g) with air will occur occasionally during regular operations. When it occurs, it will last for a short
period of time.

3. Equipment classification.
Explosion-proof centrifugal fans produced by Nyborg-Mawent S.A. are classified as explosion-proof equipment and marked with:

3.1. Marking

Conformity marking CE
Special marking of explosion-proof protection EX
Marking of equipment/fans group in a explosion-proof version II
Marking of equipment/fan category in an explosion-proof version 2
Marking of explosive atmosphere caused by the mixture of air and gas, steam and mist G
Marking – European standard E
Marking - explosion-proof protection EX
Marking of explosion-proof type – Protection through constructional safety c
Marking of explosiveness sub-group – ethylene group IIB
Marking of temperature class
− Rated surface temperature 135°C T4

3.3. Category
Group II, category 0 – provides a very high protection level, where explosive atmosphere, caused by a mixture of air and gasses,
steams and mists (G) is highly probable. Explosion-proof protection feature integrated protective means, which in case of a
failure of one protective means, at least the second independent means ensures respective protection level, or in case of two
independent failures, respective level of protection is ensured, e.g. damages – a gap between impeller and fixed parts of a fan
will decrease, sparking, temperature increase will occur as a result of vibrations, deformations - the construction provides the
explosion-proof safety. This group equipment may be applied in zones 0; 1; 2.
Group II, category 2 – provides a very high protection level, where explosive atmosphere, caused by a mixture of air and gasses,
steams and mists (G) is probable. This category of explosion-proof protections provides respective protection level even in case
of damages or hazardous work conditions, e.g. damages – a gap between impeller and fixed parts of a fan will decrease, sparking,
temperature increase will not occur as a result of vibrations, deformations - the construction provides the explosion-proof safety.
This group equipment may be applied in zones 1; 2 only.
Group II, category 3 – provides an ordinary protection level, in areas where explosive atmosphere, consisting of a mixture of air
and gasses, steams and mists (G) may occur with low probability and any occurrences will be occasional and will not last long.
This category explosion-proof protections provide respective protection level in normal work conditions, e.g. damages – a gap
between impeller and fixed parts of a fan will decrease, sparking, temperature increase will not occur as a result of vibrations,
deformations - the construction does not provide the explosion-proof safety. This group equipment may be applied in zone 2
only.

3.4. Mixture
Group II, category 2, mixture G – a mixture of air with flammable substances in a form of gasses, steams, mists. This group
equipment may be applied in zones 1; 2 only.
Mixture D – a mixture of air with flammable substances in a form of dusts. This group equipment may be applied in zones 20; 21;
22 only.

3.5. Type of protection

c – type of protection constructional safety “c” – the type of protection, where constructional means were applied in order to
provide ignition-proof protection through hot surfaces, sparks, and adiabatic compression created by moving parts.

3.6. Sub-group of explosiveness

The explosiveness sub-group is determined for group II, category 2, mixture G equipment only.
Group II, category 2, mixture G, sub-group IIa – propane group (e.g. acetone, methyl alcohol). This group equipment may be
applied in zone 1, where equipment the (II 2G E Ex IIa) are required and in zone 2 (II 3G E Ex).
Group II, category 2, mixture G, sub-group IIb – ethylene group (e.g. ethylene, hydrogen sulphide). This group equipment may
be applied in zone 1, where the equipment (II 2G E Ex IIb) and (II 2G E Ex IIa) are required and in zone 2 (II 3G E Ex).
Group II, category 2, mixture G, sub-group IIc – hydrogen group (e.g. acetylene, hydrogen). This group equipment may be
applied in zone 1, where the equipment (II 2G E Ex IIc) and (II 2G E Ex IIb), (II 2G E Ex IIa) are required and in zone 2 (II 3G E Ex).
