Surgery is Repairing and reshaping of the body with knives and stitches.
It is an art in itself one can learn and adopt it according to their needs &
provision.
Archaeological and historical evidence suggests that people have been having
surgery for thousands of years.

A VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF SURGERY

The first surgical procedures were performed in the Neolithic Age (about 10,000
to 6000 BC). Trepanning, a procedure in which a hole is drilled in the skull to
relieve pressure on the brain, may have been performed as early as 8000 BC.
In ancient India, They are also credited with having developed plastic surgery as
early as 2000 BC in response to the punishment of cutting off a person's nose or
ears for certain criminal offenses.
In the 4th century BC, the Greek physician Hippocrates published descriptions
of various surgical procedures, such as the treatment of fractures and skull
injuries.
French surgeon Ambrose Pare, successfully employed the method of ligating,
or tying off, arteries to control bleeding, thus eliminating the old method of
cauterizing, the bleeding part with a red-hot iron or boiling oil.
American surgeon Crawford W. Long used anesthesia in 1842 during the
removal of tumors but did not publish his results until 1849.
In 1865 the British surgeon Joseph Lister applied Pasteur's work to surgery,
developing antiseptic techniques including the use of a carbolic acid spray to kill
germs in the operating room before surgery
At the turn of the 20th century, When the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad
Roentgen invented X rays in 1895 to "photograph" the inside of the body he
changed the way surgery was performed.
The first kidney transplants were performed in the 1950s, and the first heart
transplant, in 1967, was performed by South African physician Christian
Barnard.

UTILIZATION OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINE TO AVOID SURGERY

• Appendicitis Renal calculi

• Stricture Urethra Tumors
• BPH & Cancer Prostate Hemorrhoids
• Fissure Hydrocephalus
• Fistula Tetanus
• Osteomyelitits Gangrene

UTILIZATION OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINE WHERE SURGERY WAS

DONE

• Surgical flatulence
• post operative pains
• bad effects of anaesthesis
• septic fever
• Recurrence of tumors, renal or ureteric calculi
• Mennorhagia or metrorrhagia after Dilatations & Curettage
• Bed sores
• Hemorrhages
• Surgical shock
• Jaundice
• After organ transplantation
MENTAL STATE OF PATIENT BEFORE SURGERY

Many a times Patient is encountered with anxiety, fear, nervousness,

insomnia, high blood pressure before and after surgery

Aconite Nap, Ars Alb, Argentum Nitricum, Crategus Oxycantha, Gelsemium,

Kali phos , Passiflora incarnata, plays a vital role before surgery by toning up
the central nervous system when operation becomes a must.

Harmonious effort of homoeopathic physician and surgeon can cut short a large
number of surgeries, if they work with mutual understanding.

LIMITATION OF HOMOEOPATHY

No medical science is perfect in itself and all medical sciences are

interdependent.
Large tumors,
Big renal calculi,
Intestinal obstruction
Congenital deformities
Compound fractures
Appendicitis threatening suppuration
If we go beyond limitation, serious complication may arise, and this may warrant
a bad name to both the physician and the profession.

DR STUART CLOSE REMARKS

“I cannot be charged with having undue learning towards surgery, but there are
times and place where good, skillful surgery is an absolute necessity.…
We must acknowledge that we have limitation.”

MISUSE OF SURGERY

The very ease and safety of operation has caused surgery to be abused to a
great extent
Long list of small to medium size tumors, gangrene, hydrocephalus, Sinusitis,
tonsillitis, Vocal cord nodule, Benign mammary tumor, Benign hypertrophic
prostate, Renal calculi etc, if cannot be cured cent percent, can be curtailed to a
great extent.

HOMOEOPATHIC APPROACH TO SURGICAL CASES

The basis of homoeopathic prescription is the totality of symptoms and applying

the principle of similia, for this
1 The therapeutic principle must be very clear
2- A large number of remedies must be thoroughly prepared
3- Develop the Art of good case taking
4- Focusing attention upon the individual
5 polishing the technique of prescribing
6 Skillful bedside prescribing

CASE- 1
A six month old, only child of the parents suffering from hydrocephalus and
otorrhoea. He was under the treatment of a Neurophysician and ENT specialist.
Discharge through ear stopped completely. In spite of the best efforts by the
neurophysician, size of the head was increasing, and downward deviation of
eyes, a slight appearance of seizure was there.

PAST HISTORY- Recurrent cold and cough immediately after birth

FAMILY HISTORY-Sister died of Hydrocephalus at the age of five

INVESTIGATION BEFORE TREATMENT- CAT SCAN

Both lateral, third and fourth ventricles are dilated. Rest of the cerebral
parenchyma shows normal attenuation pattern. Basal ganglia and thalami are
normal No midline shift is seen .Cerebellum is normal. Brain stem is normal.
Basal cisterns and sylvian fissures are normal. Cortical sulci are normal
.Calvarium is intact.

IMPRESSION-CAT Scan feature suggestive of –HYDROCEPHALUS

ADV: CSF STUDY

Parents wanted to take the expert opinion of a neurosurgeon

SURGICAL PLACEMENT OF VENTRICULAR SHUNT WAS ADVISED

Childs mother was aware of the possible complications as she discovered from
the attendants of the children who have undergone shunting. She discovered that
even after shunting, there was risk of over or under draining and to both cognitive
and physical development.
In the mean time, child had high fever was given allopathic drugs, fever gone but
child became unconscious. Homoeopathy was given a chance!

HOMOEOPATHY IN THE NEURO SURGERYWARD

Patient became completely unconscious
Head enlarged, mild swelling on face
Eyes half closed and squinting
Lying on back and sliding on bed
Trembling and twitching all over the body required to be held
Pulse intermittent and uncountable
Urine scanty
Extremities cold to touch
Zincum met 200 single dose in drops sublingually was administered

Otorrhoea started; with in half an hour, the child turned down his eyes and cried
as if hungry
Child was given milk through a tube; he swallowed 150 ml of milk,
First nourishment after days of unconsciousness.
Patient was conscious, face expression better
Swelling on face and head remained the same
Urine –scanty
Trembling all over body was not at all there but fidgety of feet persisted.
Zincum met 200 at bed time repeated

But 7 days later

Restlessness started
Face bloated, head enlarged
Thirsty- withdraws mouth from breast and sips water
Urine scanty
Painless offensive stool <feeding
Patient was chilly in character
ARSENIC ALBUM 200 weekly at bed time was prescribed

Swelling over face disappeared and size of head reduced

Thirst -normal
Urine –better
Restlessness was very much reduced
ARS ALB 200 weekly at bed time repeated for 2 months

CHILD DID NOT RETURN TO CLINIC

In the mean time, patient developed severe cold, and coughs and was on
allopathic drugs to get quick relief
BACILLINUM 200 Single dose was prescribed on return
ARSENICUM ALBUM 200 after 15 days was started again

INVESTIGATION AFTER TREATMENT

POSTERIOR FOSSA:-
4Th ventricle is normal in size, shape and location. Region of brain stem and
cerebral hemispheres are normal. Peri mesencephalic cisterns are normal
SUPRATENTORIAL COMPARTMENT:-
Cerebral parenchyma reveals normal attenuation value. Lateral ventricles are
prominent with septum in midline. Basal cisterns, sylvian fissures and sulci are
normal.
OPINION:-C.T. SCAN OF THE BRAIN WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS

DISCUSSION
Homoeopath can easily control the emergency conditions, if and only if they have
a very good knowledge of practical application of homoeopathic material medica
and its principles
Zincum met can restore suppressed eruption; can cure the consequences of
suppression
Zincum met has profound action on cerebrospinal system
ARS ALB our most important diuretic is called a “liquid torchar”

CASE -2
An emotional old lady aged 68 years, known case of hypertension
She was suffering from hysterical fits and sleeplessness
Patients was on antihypertensive drugs and tranquilizers

Past history- history of grief as her daughter was divorced 7 years back after a
long torture by her in-laws

One day, while taking dinner, telephone bell rang up

Intense pain in the head on the root of nose
Uncontrollable laughter alternating with burst of tears
Choking of the swallowed food
Stertorous breathing
Patient became completely unconscious
Involuntary flow of urine
Paralysis right side of the body

MRI BEFORE TREATMENT

There is evidence of a large intracerebral hematoma measuring 4.3x 3.0 cm in
size in the left frontoparietal periventricular region and left anterior centrum
semiovale. Age related diffuse cerebral atrophy is seen

the attendant that patient may or may not be brought back to normal condition, if
operated she might get paralyzed permanently anywhere or would become
insane.
Homoeopathy was given a chance

PATIENT WAS ADMITTED IN ICU

Semi consciousness returned
PATIENT IN A SEMICONSCIOUS STATE
Tears rolling down the eyes on seeing her divorced daughter
Retinal hemorrhage
Face blue
Twitching of the muscles of face and eyes
Thumbs clenched
IGNATIA 1000 was prescribed
PATIENT WAS FULLY CONSCIOUS
Tears stopped
Stupefied face expression
Retinal hemorrhage persisted
Twitching of muscles stopped
Thumbs regained its normal state
DISABLED GENTLE LADY
Stupefied expression was still there
Retinal hemorrhage persisted
Patient could not open right eye
Swallowing and talking was difficult
Fluid used to pass by the side of mouth
Paralysis right side of the body
BOTHROPS LANCEOLATUS 200 weekly at bed time was prescribed

AFTER FOUR WEEKS OF TREATMENT

Food stopped passing from the side of mouth
Paralytic part started improving.
BOTHROPS LANCEOLATUS 200 Continued
INVESTIGATION AFTER TREATMENT (MRI REPORT)
Sub Acute infarct in left frontal lobe with generalized cerebral atrophy(age
related)
ON THE ROAD OF RECOVERY
Patient was pulled out from the very jaws of death, when neurophysician and
neurosurgeon surgeon surrendered.
Most of the patients attendents and other patients became the followers of
homoeo
CONCLUSION
One must never consider a case hopeless or incurable.
The vast majority of operations are unnecessary & harmful. They respond rapidly
and easily to homoeopathic treatment. A homoeopathic physician should be
consulted in all surgical cases, before an operation is decided.
There is unlimited power of repair with in us, which can be roused by right
Knowledge, right medicine, and constant encouragement and before all, by the
determination of doctor to cure his patient.
