Lesson Idea Name: A look on Matter

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd

Content Standard Addressed:

S2P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties of matter and
changes that occur in objects.

c. Provide evidence from observations to construct an explanation that some changes in matter
caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some changes are irreversible.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 knowledge constructor

Selected Technology Tool: Brainpop.com

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Lesson idea implementation:
Students will be introduced to the BrainPop video on matter and their states that change. The kids will
observe and write down notes on what they saw in the video. After the video, teacher will assign students to
small groups of 3 or 5. Teacher will then model the activity. In the groups, students will be asked to apply
what they learned and the changes of matter. Students will have cards that have heat and cooling symbols on
them and have different things such as liquids, solids, and a gas. Students will place the heating or cooling on
a liquid, solid, or gas they then will place the new state of matter underneath that will indicate the change.

Instructional Software
Students will be applying and analyze what they know from watching the video. To find the solutions to the
changes and to support their evidence, students would be able to use different websites and other available
resources such as online books. Students will place the objects in place and record their observations from
the project. The groups will then share with the class their findings and why they match the objects they did
with others.

Reflective Practice:
To enhance the Loti level, students could give real life examples of things that change in matter in everyday
life, while creating videos explaining what they found and posting them to the classroom website.
Teacher can send reminder for parents and other staff and students who can attend the school to watch the
posts.
