was handed out to Strathmore High School’s
(SHS) 2017-18 recipient Adina Tarcea during a
short ceremony on June 12.
The award is given to high school students
earning the highest overall average for the
combined academic subjects of English, math,
social studies and the students next highest
academic subject, calculated to include all di-
ploma exam results.
The award has recognized outstanding
scholastic achievements of students in Canada
for more than 140 years. SHS has been pre-
senting the award to students since their 1987-
88 school year.
“The award truly represents the highest ac-
ademic achievement for our students and the
extremely high standard that these student’s
set for themselves and what they are capable
of achieving,” said SHS principal Kyle Larson.
Tarcea, currently enrolled in the medical
sciences program at Western University in
London, Ont., hopes to pursue medicine fol-
lowing her bachelor’s degree.
Tarcea grew up in Romania where a strong
work ethic was instilled in her from a young
age, and she said strong academic perfor-
mance is an important part of her life.
“Most kids hold quite high standards for
themselves so I have always had high stand-
ards for my own academic performance,” said
Tarcea. “However, all this work isn’t some-
thing I do because I feel I have to as some
sort of duty; I enjoy it, I like learning.
Tarcea was not aware she had received the
award until she returned from university in
May. She said the news came with a renewed
wave of encouragement and she knows she is
following the right path.

Local softball moms honoured Strathmore

The U16 Strathmore Thunder girls team dedicated their last home game of the season on June 17 to two women and softball moms who are special to
the team, assistant coach Kim Stanlake-Cammer and assistant coach and umpire Tanya Molnar. The two courageous and inspiring women have bravely
battled breast cancer and the team is honoured to have them as part of the team. To celebrate the dedicated game, special t-shirts were made up and a

Wheatland County council received an update on Strath-
more Motor Products (SMP) Sports Centre use from Tracy
Simpson, Town of Strathmore director of community and
protective services, and Mark Pretzlaff, the centre’s recre-
ation manager.
“Our peak times were in February and March, obviously
when the weather was at its worst,” said Pretzlaff.
There were 137 patrons and 88 drop-ins that used the fa-
cility in March 2019. Facility rentals by community groups
comprised 206 hours since opening.
The centre continues to pay attention to user feedback.
“Some of the anecdotal information we had were that the
courts were extremely popular. The drop-in basketball, bad-
minton and pickle ball were some of the big usage in the
facility,” said Pretzlaff.
Other people asked for open hours before 8 a.m., so
people could work out before going to work, a request for
weight-lifting equipment, as well as some minor suggestions

bers learn of AHS initiatives and discuss information gath-
ered from communities about healthcare priorities that im-
pact them.

Rosebud School of the Arts welcomed 30 graduates and faculty for a Guild
Reception on the morning of June 8. Education director Paul F. Muir shared
how God led him to Rosebud where he’s shaped the mentorship pro-
gramme and is equipping artists to transform the world. Rosebud Theatre
artistic director Morris Ertman spoke of the impact the school’s graduates
are having in the broader theatre community, and faculty member David
Snider facilitated guests’ telling of stories from their years in Rosebud. The

Hello Strathmore! I hope you have been enjoy-
ing the beautiful weather this past week, and a
big shout out to all the dads. I hope your family
spoiled you, and that you were able to carve out
some family time.
In connection with our platform commitments, I
and some of my fellow MLAs met with many folks
from the film industry as we are hoping to attract
this incredible and viable industry to our province.
We met with some amazing people from Netflix,
Bell TV, Telus and APTN, all of whom are creating
content on various platforms, from broadcasting
to the internet. We in Alberta consume a ton of
content from platforms such as Crave, HBO, Netf-
lix and others. We also tend to enjoy documenta-
ries. The industry is taking notice of our province
and sees us as an amazing opportunity for their
companies to flourish here whether that is in ac-
tual movie making, production, lighting, technical
work and other jobs to post-production which is
where the long-term jobs are. Our amazing folks
from the oil and gas industry have skills that are
transferable into this industry, making it a real
possibility to see jobs created if we can attract the
companies here. I don’t know if you know this,
but Calgary has a beautiful sound stage (where
they create sets and do scenes inside buildings)
called the Calgary Film Centre that houses some
amazing productions such as Fargo, Jann (based
on Jann Arden’s life) and Heartland. In order to
attract more investment, we are looking at chang-
ing the funding model to a tax credit system that
will hopefully make the system more flexible and
bring in some more great productions that have
longevity and will help to build up the industry
and create jobs. We are very excited to sell Al-
berta, and we are even more excited to see what
the industry will do in helping us to continue to
build our province and our prosperity. B.C, Mani-
toba and Ontario have very viable and competi-
tive markets. In B.C, 90,000 jobs have been created
and moreover they are scooping up the fine talent
that is being created in Alberta at our institutions,
from production to management to logistics. With
low corporate taxes, repealing the carbon tax, our
work ethic, our beautiful vistas, the sheer talent
and the low Canadian dollar we have a lot to offer.
On to the federal government; I wish I had
good news to share. As you have probably read,
Bill C-69, aka the “no more pipelines bill,” was
rammed through by the federal Liberals. This is
an attack on our prosperity and our First Nations,
and it does nothing to help the environment. In
fact, not selling our natural resources that are re-
covered responsibly and with the best regulations
in the world is an attack on every nation that is
in energy poverty, and it is especially despicable
because many other suppliers have a horrible hu-
man rights record, and no environmental regula-

The Prime Minister is doing his level best to lose
his election coming up on Oct. 21, 2019. Many
Liberals are getting nervous as seen in the June
13 Financial Post article by Diane Francis (https://

mps-are-jumping-ship-in-droves-as-trudeau-con-
tinues-to-hobble-the-economy). Fleeing capital,
the lack of pipeline infrastructure, the lack of com-
petitiveness, and the real lack of a plan short of
virtue signaling and my favourite, the water bottle,
I mean the water boxes, you know, those dispos-
able things that we carry water in – you get the
picture.

years in celebration this year. We are honoured
to know and work with the incredible Philip-
pine families in Alberta, over 75,000 strong. Also,
we celebrated world refugee day this past week.
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to the
refugees in our community. World Refugee Day of-
fers an opportunity for everyone to show support
for people forced to flee.
I would like to give a special shout out to the
Go Girls team in Strathmore and especially to the
Wheatland Crisis Shelter which held its Under The
Big Top Gala and Fundraiser this past Saturday. Go
Girls teaches girls the sky is limit to what they can
accomplish, and the Wheatland Crisis Society with
their Strathmore Shelter offers refuge to victims of
abuse.

Rosebud Theatre tells true story of Lilia

Lilia, a play written by a granddaugh-
ter about her own larger-than-life grand-
mother, will be performed on Rosebud
Theatre’s BMO Studio Stage from July 5
to Aug. 31.
Libby Skala wrote the story of her
grandmother Lilia Skala, who fled the
Nazi regime in her homeland of Austria.
When Lilia and her young family landed
in New York, her first American job was
at a zipper factory. Yet Lilia was soon
performing on Broadway and in mov-
ies, and she later received a nomination
for Best Supporting Actress for her role
in Lilies of the Field.
Libby Skala, also an actress, wrote her
grandmother’s story, and in the original
productions, it was a one-woman show
with Libby performing the roles of both
grandmother and granddaughter. In
Rosebud Theatre’s production, Cassia
Sunflowers in Strathmore
The Western District Historical Society (WDHS)
planted sunflower seeds near the historical
Klaiber barn on May 27. As the second sunflower
field WDHS has planted in as many years, the
seeds will start blooming in late July or early Au-
gust to grow into a beautiful sunflower field that
will last throughout September and possibly into
October, for people to enjoy.

Schmidt of Rosebud plays the role of

Lilia. Sarah Rodgers of Vancouver is di-

“The opportunity there is really going
to be about the relationship between
grandmother and granddaughter,” not-
ed Schmidt.
In the play, the audience hears Lilia’s
story as Libby and her grandmother
get to know each other. Starting in the
1970s and ending in 1994, the year Lilia
Skala passed away, Libby grows from a
preschooler to a young woman.
“(Lilia) talks about this journey when
she was trying to get the papers and try-
ing to get to New York,” said Schmidt.
“It seemed like it was impossible, and
she talks about her praying. Lilia does
talk a lot about her faith and that she
prayed, and God saw her through. She
talks about turning down roles because
of her principles, because of her integ-
rity or even her life experience. She’s
formidable; she’s a force of a human.”
Lilia isn’t always kind to her grand-
daughter, which opens opportunities
for restoring the relationship.
“We’re not just looking at a museum,
a relic of a person,” Schmidt said. “And

for our elders. And I think that’s a big

they did… before they were quiet and
frail and wise.

ers and granddaughters could come

mentors in their lives, people that they

There are thousands of theories about the
therapeutic effects of coffee. Some say coffee
prevents Parkinson’s or at least reduces some of the
symptoms while others say it has no effect on the
disease. Some say it may even help protect against
Alzheimer’s disease. It seems that whether the coffee
contains caffeine or not seems to have no effect on
the possible therapeutic effects. The jury is still out.
It’s not a good idea to take antibiotics left over
from another infection If you feel an old infection
has returned, see your doctor for an assessment. You
need the right number of doses to do the job. Too
few doses can contribute to the growing problem of
antibiotic resistance.
We hear a lot about pH. This is a scale that measures
the acidity or alkalinity of an environment or
substance. The scale ranges from 0 to 14 (from most
acidic to most alkaline with 7 being a neutral pH).
Below 7 is acidic and above is alkaline. A change of
one pH unit corresponds with a ten-fold change in
acidity or alkalinity.
So if a substance has a pH of 5, it is 10 times more
acidic than one with a pH of 6.
By the way, the pH inside human cells is 6.8 while
our blood is at 7.4.
The claim of “purifying the blood and eliminating
toxins” is often attributed to apple cider vinegar.
There is no truth to these claims. Your kidneys
and liver do an excellent job of doing this and you
can help these organs by reducing the toxins you
introduce to your body…alcohol, smoking, volatile
fumes and pesticides.

ASC focuses on empowering seniors

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) has
launched a month-long senior outreach cam-
paign across Alberta to recognize Seniors Month
( June) and World Elder Abuse Day ( June 15).
According to the ASC, nearly 40 per cent of
Albertans age 55+ believe they have been ap-
proached with a potentially fraudulent invest-
ment, as identified in an Investor Index Study
commissioned by the ASC.
The ASC’s campaign is focused on empower-
ing seniors to improve their financial literacy,
recognize the signs of investment fraud, em-
power them to make wise investment decisions,
and encourage all Albertans to be aware of the
signs and symptoms of elder financial abuse.
“Building relationships with seniors’ groups
is a critical part of our work to help Albertans
advance their financial literacy and protect
themselves from investment fraud,” said Alison
Trollope, ASC director, communications and in-
vestor education. “This year, we are continuing
to expand our reach, aiming to ensure all Alber-
tans are empowered and have the knowledge to
protect their retirement nest egg.”
In 2018, the ASC conducted an online quiz
targeted towards senior Albertans, the results
of which highlighted that over 50 per cent of
Albertans 55 years of age and older didn’t real-
ize that if they had been a victim of a financial
scam, they could be targeted again. This is an
example of a “recovery room scam” wherein
the original fraudster often sells the victim’s
information to another scam, who then offers
to recover their investment at a price. This may
include paying taxes or a service fee, which is
simply a fraudulent demand for more money
and the victim loses again. It was also found
that 61 per cent of respondents would consider
an investment opportunity that “guarantees” a
legacy for their family, despite the fact that the
promise of a “guaranteed” return is an indica-
tion of a potential fraudulent investment.
The ASC’s 2019 activities aim to connect di-
rectly with seniors and their caregivers through
a variety of community events, a financial lit-
eracy quiz and seniors’ resources on checkfirst.

their financial and investment knowledge and
check if they are on the right track to protecting
their financial future through the ASC’s fun and

being sold as fast as he could get his
hands on it.
Gerald’s father, Peter B. Geeraert,
born 1927 at the farm, was the first ir-
rigator, starting in the late 1950s with
a hand move system. Initially, he used
this system on the pasture for his cows
which was very labour intensive, ulti-
mately leading to it being parked along
the fence line.
Gerald was born in 1953 in Calgary
and attended school at St Rita’s through
Grade 10, with high school completed
elsewhere. This was followed by a di-
ploma in agriculture mechanics at Olds
College before returning to farm with
his Dad. In 1980, his brother Dale start-
ed farming with him, until Dale passed
in 2016. Initially, they used a volume
gun for two years, before replacing this
with wheel lines in the early 1980s, and
he still uses them today. As previously

Wheatland County council

There are many meetings and confer-
ences slated for representatives from
Wheatland County council members to
attend. One is the Federation of Cana-
dian Municipalities (FCM) conference,
which was held in Quebec this May.
Larger cities can host conferences, but
is awarded on a bid basis. Wheatland
County has a membership in the orga-
nization.
“We’re making the most of the tools
we’ve got to build better lives, and re-
cent gains are helping. But to unlock
the potential of our rural communities,
we’ll need to modernize how we work
with the federal government, and this
election campaign is a pivotal oppor-
tunity to make that happen,” said Ray
Orb, chair of FCM’s Rural Forum.
Speakers, panels and workshops
were slated over three days and the
goal was to allow attendees the ability
to network, learn new ideas, promote
their community and contribute to fed-
eral governance by talking with gov-
ernment representatives. The second
day of the conference covered rural
municipalities.
Wheatland County Councillor Tom
Ikert attended, but he said he wanted
council to reconsider membership and
future attendance. The membership
fees are charged on a per capita basis.
“It was interesting (but) I am not sure.
I would love to have everyone attend
an FCM (conference) and then have a
meeting as to whether it is worth our
time or not,” said Ikert.
He said Albertans make up the larg-
est contingent at the conferences, but
he said smaller municipalities and Al-
berta rural issues were not represented
well.
“We are not getting anything done.
The closest I came to rural was a mu-
nicipality of 30,000 people. So Wheat-
land County doesn’t even register. In
my opinion (with) the energy we put
in, we never get anything back,” said
Ikert.
Councillor Ben Armstrong agreed
with Ikert, but noted a lot of the fed-
eral funding programs are delivered
through FCM.
“Yes, it seems we are wasting our
time down there, but our voice is being
heard. A couple years ago it wasn’t like
that,” said Armstrong.
Councillor Glenn Koester listed a
few projects in Wheatland County that
received funding through FCM. They
included $100,000 legal fees in a Su-
preme Court challenge on a bylaw
matter, over $60,000 for the Carseland
floating island project, money for the
Rosebud symbiotic project and money
contributed to Southern Alberta Energy
from Waste Association (SAEWA).
Koester said the main reason Wheat-
land County belongs to FCM is the
funding, and attempting to have a voice
on a national level.

During their 36th recital, Dancing

Christian Academy on June 2, each
class got to perform one dance for their
peers, family and friends, to showcase
what they have learned and worked on
all year.
“We believe it is important to cel-
ebrate the dancers’ accomplishments
and show off all of the hard work they
put in during the season,” said Michelle
Murdoch, administration manager at
Expressions. “Parents and families love
being able to see the progress made
each year of their own dancers, and I
am sure they love to see the growth and
progress of other dancers as they have
watched them grow up in the studio,”
she said.
Every season, every dancer has the
opportunity to work and train hard for a

The approach of Father’s Day
started me musing. The Christian
church has, throughout its history,
addressed God as “Father.” We
know Jesus called God “Father”
and taught his disciples to pray,
saying “Our Father …” But what
does it mean?
The Greeks called Zeus the
“father of gods and men,” by
which they meant progenitor or
originator. Zeus certainly had a
highly conflicted relationship with
his “children,” was wary of any
of them getting too close to his

become heirs of everything he
has.
However distant we may
sometimes feel from God,
however dire our straits may
appear, and however badly our
human fathers may have treated
us, when the church prompts us
to address God as Father, it is
to remind us that God is for us –
more surely and more powerfully
than we can dare to imagine.

DAWE, Harold Vernon
February 20, 1929 – June 13, 2019
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a beloved
husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Harold Dawe, in
Strathmore. Harold was born in Long Pond, Newfoundland. He is sur-
vived by his wife of 68 years, Alma, and loving daughter Beverley Devetten (Frank).
He was a loving grandfather to Randy Simpson (Cherylyn) and Trevor Simpson (Car-
ley); and special Grampy to great-grandchildren Silas, Nixon, Quinn, and Veronica
Simpson. Harold was also survived by his older brother, Jim, in Sarnia, Ontario and

ley); her granddaughters Amanda, Breanna, Cassie, Shaelen and Kailee; her great
grandsons Noah and Jack; step granddaughters Jacki, Ché and Shayla; step grand-
sons Korsyn and Kevin; and her step great-grandchildren Savanna, Michael and
