2. Teaching Model(s): Small Group (RTI)

3. Objective(s):

- Students will be able to determine the main idea and supporting details in

expository text

4. Materials and Technology Resources:

- Chromebooks (to watch main - Highlighters

idea video on Flocabulary) - Reading Notebooks

- Expository Text (variations) - Whoteboard/ Markers

5. Instructional Practices

A. Motivation/ Engagement (5 minutes)

- Teacher will show a brief main idea video on Flocabulary. When video is over students

will recap on what a main idea is.

B. Activities & Experiences (20 - 25 minutes)

- Teacher will begin the lesson by explicitly stating, “the main idea is the one idea that the

passage is mostly about. A supporting detail explains, or tells more about the main idea.”

- With a variation of expository texts there will be a guided passage and an independent

passage where students highlight the main idea in blue and the supporting details in

yellow.

- Students will discuss why these details support the main idea
C. Closure (5 - 10 minutes)

- Students will silently read a passage. When they are finished reading the teacher will

ask, “what is the main idea and one supporting detail?” The students will write their

responses on their white boards and have the teacher check for understanding.

D. Extension & Contingency

- In the following small group lesson the students will write an opening sentence with a

main idea and add supporting details about their favorite thing to do.

6. Accomodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners

Students can work with a partner. If needed teacher will provide one on one instruction as

needed

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning

A. Through guided questions, close monitoring and informal observation; teacher

will be able to assess student's ability and understanding.
