1 Introduction
The Corporate Demo Team have managed to ‘remove’ the Microsoft Key codes from
the standard corporate demo image and the notes below highlight the steps that are
required to re-apply the official keys from our partner community. Please note – The
Partner will need to obtain a copy of either the VMWare Player or VMWare
Workstation for this process to work – see http://www.vmware.com/ for more
information
VMWare Workstation 5.xx or higher if they are not familiar with this or don't have the
software partners will need to procure it through normal software sales channels. We
don't provide this software. For information on this the partners can go to
http://www.vmware.com/products/ws
Partners will also require VOLUME LICENSE KEYS of Windows 2003 Server, not
retail keys. Again they need to procure this through their normal software channels.
For information on this the partner can go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/purchasing/default.mspx
It is very important they use Volume keys as the retail keys will not work. A large PC,
recommended 2 GB of RAM or higher and a BIG hard drive, the VMWare image is
over 20 GB - the bigger the better for this. A high speed connection as the download
is very large 5 GB+ and as such it may take hours to download. The download is
available from ESD, so partners will also need an ESD account.
https://businessobjects.subscribenet.com
Once you have logged into the ESD site you should navigate to the ‘Partners’ section
and then to the ‘Business Intelligence Platform’ section where you will see an item
in the list called:
‘5.10 Corp DEMO: BOE SP2/PROD PACK-PAR – IDD, DI, BOMM – INTL’
You should now have access to the 5 files that make up the distribution set.
Select the ‘Download’ option for each file and save the 5 files into a common folder on
your PC. File #2 is a readme that might open in a new browser window – this file is not
needed for the installation. You should end up with the following files on your hard
disk:
14-00758-085.rar 2,097,152 KB
14-00759-085.rar 2,097,152 KB
14-00760-085.rar 1,848,208 KB
14-00758-085_PD.doc 68 KB
Start the Virtual Machine ignoring all messages during start-up. This version on the
Corporate Demo Image contains a fully working image however the keys for Windows
2003 Server Standard Edition, Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server have
been removed. During start-up you will be prompted to apply your organisations keys
for the products listed above.
The first OS screen can take several minutes to disappear so please be patient if you
see this screen.
Finally we get to the point that you need to start to configure the Operating System
etc. You start with the End User License Agreement Dialog.
Followed by the Regional and Language Options – You can alter these settings to be
specific for the region and language of your choice.
Next step is to enter your Name and the Organisation you represent.
Finally you will need to enter the Serial Number for your organisation for Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 – Standard Edition.
Fill in the License Type that your organisation has obtained from Microsoft.
Enter a name for the machine and select the administrator password – bobj
Set the Date, Time and Time Zone for the installation.
Finally select ‘Next >’ and this completes the installation options.
There are a few issues that occur when starting the 5.10 demo image the first time.
They are mostly due to moving the virtual machine to a new physical machine. All are
relatively easy to resolve, and need to be resolved one time only per physical machine.
The issues are: Xcelsius Designer needs to be activated and the Search Server
needs to be bound to a new IP address.
Although the Windows Pagefile has been created within the VMWare Image you may
need to alter the size of this file depending on the amount of memory your host PC
has installed. Searching the internet for the optimum size seems to recommend a
Pagefile of about 1.5x the memory allocated to the VMWare. To change the size of
your Pagefile select
and from the advanced tab edit the Performance Settings. Select the Advanced tab
and Change the Virtual Memory settings. Make the appropriate changes and make
sure to click the Set button to force the changes.
• If the Activation dialogue box appears and your VM image is in NAT mode,
choose "Automatic Activation" (the 1st/default radio button) and click "Next".
Your copy of Xcelsius will be automatically activated.
• If you can't run the VM in NAT mode or don't have an internet connection for
some other reason, choose "Manual Activation", and choose "activate from
another machine with an internet connection", then follow the activation
wizard's instructions.
There are known issues with Search that are caused by a change in the IP address /
environment of the machine.
This process only needs to be done once as the IP address will be fixed for the
VMWare after the first installation.
All core Business Objects services have been set to Manual start on the image, and a
Scheduled Task has been created to call a .bat file on system start which starts all the
services.
• There are delays built in to the service start process to ensure that everything
starts cleanly on VM images with smaller amounts of dedicated RAM. So,
when starting up the VM image, please be patient---give the image a few
minutes to start all the services. All the services will start by themselves.
The installation contains a full copy of Microsoft Office 2003 and this too has been
installed with no serial numbers. During the first use of Excel, Word or PowerPoint you
will be prompted to end your license details in the following dialog.
You will only have to enter the details for one of the Office applications as they all use
a common set off keys. The VMWare is now ready to use and contains a full
compliment of products and demonstration content.
In the case of Microsoft SQL Server, it is replaced by its "free" versions-MSDE for
MSSQL 2000, and SQL Server Express for MSSQL 2005. This document lists the
steps involved on an image running MSSQL 2000 SP 4. With care, there should be no
need for any further configuration in order for repositories, reports, and dashboards to
function.
For Microsoft Analysis Services, local offline cube files can be produced using Excel.
OLAP Intelligence and Voyager reports will need to be configured to hit the local
offline cube files. At this time there appears to be no workaround for reconfiguring
OLAP universes to run off local offline cube files. Additionally, any cube role security
that has been defined will be lost as this functionality is not supported by offline cube
files.
However, partners can re-install Microsoft Analysis Services using their own license to
get around this as long as backups of the original cubes are available on the image
(and they will be on upcoming Corporate Demo Images). Similarly, replacing MSDE
with the full version of Microsoft SQL Server would make client applications like
Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer available once again, in all their wonderful UI
glory!
