Instructional Plan (iPlan)

Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP)

DLP No.: 2 Learning Area: Grade Level: 11 Duration: 110 minutes

Practical Research 1 Date: November 12, 2018
Topic Types of Research

Learning objectives The students will be able to:

1. State what mindful observation is
2. Distinguish between different types of research
3. Provide example of Research in areas of professional interest
Materials/Resources Reference: Practical Research 1 by Esther L. Baraceros, Rex Book Store Inc.
Needed Materials: Visual Aids, Activity Sheets
Introduction 1. The teacher will review the previous discussions and will present the objectives
2. The students will share their KW about the topic
Activity (15 minutes) Mindfulness Exercise
The teacher will guide the students to a mindful breathing exercise. After the exercise the students with
their groups will go outside the classroom and will record anything that they observed about their assigned
subject. They will list 10 observations about that subject. They will be given 5 minutes to do this. After 5
minutes, they will return to the classroom and will classify their observations based on how they wanted to
classify them.
Analysis (5 minutes) 1. How did you feel about the activity?
2. How did you feel about the mindful breathing exercise? How did this affect your way of accomplishing
task?
3. In what ways did you classify your observation?
4. What are your major findings about your subject?

The purpose is for the students to value mindfulness in observation. By being mindful in doing observation,
we get the most important data. One way of bringing yourself to the present moment is by using the
mindfulness skill called observe (Linehan, 1993). Observe is about merely noticing what is happening right
now. The students are expected to use this technique as they go on with their inquiry!
Abstraction (65 minutes) (The teacher will present the research example and guide the students in analyzing the purpose and type
of research involved)

Research can be categorized into two types based on the manner of application, purpose and observation
1. Based on Application of Research Method
a. Pure research -If it deals with concepts, principles, or abstract things. This type of research
aims to increase your knowledge about something.
Example: “Sales practices of micro-scale enterprise in Tayud Market”
b. Applied research - to apply your chosen research to societal problems or issues, finding
ways to make positive changes in society, you call your research.
Example: “Effective marketing strategy to boost sales in Tayud Market”
2. Based on Purpose of the Research
a. Descriptive Research – This type of research aims at defining or giving a verbal portrayal or
picture of a person, thing, event, group, situation, etc. This is liable to repeated research
because its topic relates itself only to a certain period or a limited number of years. Based on
the results of your descriptive studies about a subject, you develop the inclination of
conducting further studies on such topic.
Example: Selection and purchasing trends of the customers in SM Consolacion
b. Correlational Research – A correlational research shows relationships or connectedness of
two factors, circumstances, or agents called variables that affect the research. It is only
concerned in indicating the existence of a relationship, not the causes and ways of the
development of such relationship.
Example: “A Correlation Study of Personal Entrepreneurial Competency and the Academic
Performance in Operations Management of ABM Graduates”
c. Explanatory Research – This type of research elaborates or explains not just the reasons
behind the relationship of two factors, but also the ways by which such relationship exists.
Example: Effects of packaging style to product sales
d. Exploratory Research – An exploratory research’s purpose is to find out how reasonable or
possible it is to conduct a research study on a certain topic. Here, you will discover ideas on
topics that could trigger your interest in conducting research studies.
Example: Assessment on the criteria retailers use in deciding whether or not to adopt new
product line
e. Action Research – This type of research studies an ongoing practice of a school,
organization, community, or institution for the purpose of obtaining results that will bring
improvements in the system.
Example: Action research on the effect of a new marketing strategy to monthly sales outcome
3. Based on the type of data gathered
a. Qualitative research requires non-numerical data, which means that the research uses
words rather than numbers to express the results, the inquiry, or investigation about people’s
thoughts, beliefs, feelings, views, and lifestyles regarding the object of the study. These
opinionated answers from people are not measurable; so, verbal language is the right way to
express your findings in a qualitative research.
Example:
1. The students’ images of Chemistry
2. Gender and cultural gaps in the classroom
3. Science practices of the Mangyan Tribe
b. Quantitative research involves measurement of data. Thus, it presents research findings
referring to the number or frequency of something in numerical forms (i.e., using
percentages, fractions, numbers)
Example:
1. Predictors of Science Performance
2. Growth performance of organic fertilizer
3. Population rate in Metro Manila in the next 20 years

Application (15 minutes) 1. In their research notebook, make a graphical presentation of the classifications and types of
research
2. The students will classify their 10 observation as either qualitative or quantitative
Assessment (10 minutes) Students: Grade yourself on how well you have learned each topic below. Rank it from 3.0 (lowest) to 1.0
(highest).
___The idea behind research
___Importance of research
___Characteristics of research
___Research processes
___ethics in research
___Classification of research type
___Qualitative vs Quantitative Research
___Determining the quality of research
