CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter focused on review of the literature to this study. It also covered the factors

that influence the increased in number of students enrolled in Senior High School ICT course at

Semirara National High School. These are the factors that influence increase number of students;

ICT facilities, ICT Teachers, Location of School, Job availability and opportunity of ICT and

Students’ aspiration. It ended with conceptual framework, Theoretical Framework, hypothesis and

operational terms.

2.2Influence of ICT facilities on the increased in number of students enrolled in Senior High

School ICT course.

ICT FACILITIES

Perkins (2012) proposed five generic categories to describe the variety of ways in

which educational technology can be used in classroom learning: Information Banks,

Symbol Pads, Construction Kits, Phenomenaria, and Task Managers.

Schanks and Cleary (2015) focus on what they call, goal-directed learning. They

discuss the need to develop active learning environments in which students are

encouraged to pursue intrinsically motivating goals which are related to intend learning

outcomes. They suggest that computer software can be used to support this scenario.

ICT TEACHER
SEMIRARA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

SEMIRARA, CALUYA, ANTIQUE

(Cradler & Bridgforth, 2012) Teachers are a key component in the learning

environment and therefore the impact of ICT on teachers and the strategies they employ

to facilitate the environment are critical. There sometimes appears to be an assumption

that using ICT to support learning requires change for all teachers whereas clearly some

teachers (the authors included) have been creating appropriate learning environments for

years without using ICT.

Grace Kao & Marta Tienda (2013) ‘Educational Aspirations of Minority Youth’

Through the National Education Longitudinal Study of 2013 (NELS:88), The researchers

analyzed how educational aspirations were formed and were maintained from eighth to

twelfth grades among a single cohort of youth Guided by research in the status attainment

literature, which focused on how aspirations were shaped and the blocked opportunities

framework, which considered the structural obstacles that bound or level aspirations. A

sample of 510 whites and Asians, black and Hispanic youth were taken. The results

revealed that the relative shares of minority youth who have high educational aspirations

were high from eight to twelfth grades. However, ethnic groups differed to the 48 extent

to which high educational aspirations were maintained such that black and Hispanic youth

had less stable aspirations. Results suggested that family socioeconomic status (SES)

not only contributed to ambitious aspirations in eighth grade but, more important, to the

maintenance of high aspirations throughout the high school years. Because black and

Hispanic students were less likely to maintain their high aspirations throughout high

school owing to their lower family SES background, they argued that their early

aspirations were less concrete than those of white and especially Asian students. Focus-

group discussions with adolescents support quantitative findings that, compared to whites

and Asians, black and Hispanic youth were relatively uninformed about college, thus

dampening their odds of reaching their educational goals.

2.8 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Social Influence Theory

The central theme of social influence theory, as proposed by Kelman (1958), is that an
individual’s attitude, beliefs and subsequent actions or behaviors are influenced by referent others
through three processes: compliance, identification, and internalization. Kelman (1958) posited
that social influence brings about changes in attitude and actions, and that changes may occur at
different “levels”. This difference in the level of changes can be attributed by the differences in
the processes through which individuals accept influence. Kelman (1958) delineated three primary
processes of influence as described below:

Compliance is assumed to occur when individuals accept influence and adopt the induced
behavior to gain rewards (or, approval) and avoid punishments (or, disapproval). Hence, “the
satisfaction derived from compliance is due to the social effect of accepting influence.” (p.53)
identification is said to happen when individuals adopt the induced behavior in order to create or
maintain a desired and beneficial relationship to another person or a group. Hence, the satisfaction
occurs due to “the act of conforming.” (p.53)

Internalization is assumed to occur when individuals accept influence after perceiving the
content of the induced behavior is rewarding in which the content indicates the opinions and
actions of others. It is also stated that individuals adopt the induced behavior realizing that it is
congruent with their value system. In this case, therefore, the satisfaction occurs due to “the content
of the new behavior”. (p.53) each of the three processes can be represented by a function of the
following three determinants of influence: (a) the relative importance of the anticipated effect, (b)
the relative power of the influencing agent, and (c) the prepotency of the induced response (Kelman
1958). However, for each process, these determinants are qualitatively different. So each process
has a distinctive set of antecedent conditions; similarly each process leads to a distinctive set of
consequent conditions.

Since social influence can shape an individual’s attitudes, beliefs and actions, the impact
of social influence on information system (IS) acceptance and usage has been studied extensively.
However, the initial theorizing on IS adoption and use (Lewis et al. 2003; Venkatesh and David
2000; Ventakesh et al. 2003) is contended to consider the perspective of social normative
compliance, thereby overlooking the identification and internalization processes of social
influence (Malhotra and Galleta 2005). It is argued that the subjective norm is the dominant
conceptualize of social influence and the way it is operationalized that typically emphasizes
compliance (Wang et.al. 2013).
SEMIRARA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

SEMIRARA, CALUYA, ANTIQUE

Subjective norm is theorized in several behavioral models such as the theory of planned behavior
(TPB) and the theory of reasoned action (TRA) (Ajzen 1991; Fishbein and Ajzen 1975).
Technology-related subjective norm appears in different IS-specific models, including TAM2
AND UTAUT (Venkatesh and Davis 2000; Venkatesh et al. 2003).

Realizing that only one aspect of social influence i.e., compliance may not predict the true
relationship between the system users’ belief and behavior, and IS use, other researcher attempt to
bring the perspectives of all three processes of social influence to provide the integrated impact of
them (Mahotra and Galletta 2005; Wang et al. 2013). They believe that the effect of compliance-
based social influence may reduce over time, whereas the effects of identification and
internalization would persist over longer periods. Therefore, studies that theorize all three
processes of social influence indicate that social influence may differ significantly across groups
in organizations (Wang et al. 2013). Such conceptualization helps us to understand how the system
users’ own beliefs and judgments also influence their commitment to adopt and use technology,
complementing the understanding of previous studied that focus on how the system users comply
and conform to the beliefs of salient others.

5.3 RECOMMENDATION

Based on the findings, the following recommendation are hereby made:

For students

Think wisely before choosing course you want in Senior High School

Know your capability or skills in order to apply in choosing course

For Parents and Teacher

The ICT teachers should show that they are willing to assist or teach those students who

are not fully knowledgeable, for them to master what others can do.

Since students aspiration is the highest factors that influence the increased in number of

students enrolled in Senior High school ICT course the parents should let their children

choose what they really want. Support should start from the parents or family and not

rejection.

For Administration

There is need of well-equipped schools with adequate computer facilities to have more

students choose Information and communication technology and to ensure that they can

apply their knowledge or skills in the near future.
