CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Language is an important thing to all people in the world because it is a very

useful tool for the people to communicate with each other and to express

themselves. Beside of that, language has functions to give information and to

convey the feelings and emotions. According to Chomsky, “Language is one

characteristic that is unique to humans among all other living beings”. There is

more than one language in this world such as the Chinese language, Japanese

language, and English used by different people. However, people only understand

a language only in their region. When the people communicate with someone

from another region and they cannot understand what they say, people need to

transfer the meanings of their own language into another language. It is called

Translation.
Translation becomes one of the most important tools for people to translate

something. Translation is the meaning of one language that transfers into another

language. The translation must keep the meaning of the Source Language (SL)

text into the form of Target Language (TL). Translation is difficult in translating

English text into Indonesia because of the differences between linguistic system

and culture form of each language. The closest natural equivalent between the

source language and the target language need to be found since there is no
language need to be found since there are no languages in the world which

identical each other. Translation usually needs certain theories and process. One of

them is Translation Procedures Theory proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet.

Translation procedures are formulating an equivalence purpose by transferring

elements of meaning from the Source Language (SL) to the Target Language

(TL). Vinay and Darbelnet Theory (2000) on a methodology for translation is

adopted. They propose seven procedures or strategies of translation such as

borrowing, calque, literal, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation.

Many of certain fields have already been touched by the phenomena of

translation such as IT field, educational field, the field of accommodation, tourism

and so on. Entertainment is one of the most important thing for all people in the

world because they would be able to relieve their stress through entertainment.

Story translation is one of the most popular translation phenomena in the world.
Story book is the most favorable thing to have for people to spend their free

time to relieve their stress. Story book considered as a breakthrough to an

imaginary world for people to escape their real lives. People can feel entertained

when they are reading a story book, as story books mostly contain very

compelling stories which people might find those interesting, especially in

Indonesia where there are many compelling stories to be found. There is book

store in Indonesia that all people know called Gramedia which have many types

of story book. One of the most complete story books in Gramedia is “I Love You,

Dad..” by Arleen A, which is translated by Bhuana Ilmu Populer Kelompok

Gramedia. This book would be the data due to its translation has a high amount of

translation procedures phenomenon.

1.2 Problem of Study

According to background above, there are problems that have to be solve:

1. What kinds of translation procedures found in English-Indonesian

translation on the story book of ‘I Love You, Dad…’ by Arleen.A?

2. What is the most dominant type of translation procedures used in English

– Indonesia Translation story book of ‘I Love You, Dad…’ by Arleen.A?

1.3 Aims of Study

Based on the problems above, the study aims to:

1. To find out the type of translation procedure found in story book of ‘I

Love You, Dad…’

2. To describe the factors that determine the translation procedures occurred

in English-Indonesian translation the story book of ‘I Love You, Dad…’

1.4 Scope of Discussion

This study was focusing on analyzing translation procedures in translating the

story book of ‘I Love You, Dad…’. Based on translation procedures theory

proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (in Venuti 2000: 84-93) This study is focusing

on analyzing all kind of translation procedures.

1.5 Research Method

The method in this study would be divided into several parts; those are (1)

data source, (2) method and technique of collecting data, (3) method and

techniques of analyzing data, and (4) method and technique of presenting analysis.

1.5.1 Data Source

The data source is a source where the data is obtained. The data source

would be taken from the translation of the story book ‘I Love You, Dad…’ by

Arleen.A and its translation in Indonesian by Bhuana Ilmu Populer Kelompok

Gramedia. This story book is telling about the love of a father to his children. The

reason why the researcher chose this movie rather than other movie because it

contains many data which is relevant to the problem above.

1.5.2 Method and Technique of Collecting Data

This research is using library research because this study collects the data not

from the field. Since the object of this study was text the method of collecting data

were the documentation and observation method. There are four steps for data

collection technique as mentioned below:

1. Reading and scanning the book to find out the translation procedure

phenomenon
2. Collecting all the sentences and phrases that containing the type of

translation procedure on the story book from SL and the TL.

3. Listing SL and TL sentence and phrases in which the translation

procedures occurred in the English and Indonesia translation of the story

book.

1.5.3 Method and Technique of Analyzing Data

The data are analyzed by using qualitative method (Library research

method). The data analyzed by these following steps:

1. Defining the word classes by using an online tool named LinguaKit

2. Classifying the kind of Translation Procedures as stated by Vinay and

Darbelnet.
3. Describing the factors that determine the translation procedure occurrence.

1.5.4 Method and Technique of Presenting the Analysis

The data is analyzing by using formal and non-formal method. For the

formal method, the data will be presented by words and the non-formal method

will be presented in table. The Table is separated into two parts, in the left side is

SLT and the right side is TLT. The step of technique of presenting the data as

mentiond below:
1. To make it easier to understand, the researcher would make the Table

containing SLT, TLT, and also the analysis.

2. The researcher will classify the data into the type of Translation

Procedure. The utterances are formatted into bold and italic font. So

that the reader could be able to understand which utterance are the

Translation Procedure.
3. For the descriptions of the analysis would be presented below the

tables.
