Answer in brief the following

2. A boy pulls a sled in which his sister is sitting with a constant velocity for 13m. The
combined mass of the sled and the girl is 25 kg. The rope makes an angle of 31 degrees with
the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the sled and the ground is 0.23.
Find the
a) Constant force F applied by the boy
b) Work done by the boy.

3. A 60- kg diver with an initial speed of 0.75 m/s dives 3.00 m before hitting the surface of the
water in a swimming pool. (a) Calculate the velocity with which the diver would hit the
water surface. (b) If the diver touches the bottom of the 1.5 m deep pool with a speed of 0.5
m/s, calculate the energy lost due to the drag force of the water. [3M]
4. Two vibrations at right angles to one another are described by the equations
x = A1Cos (2 π t), y = A2Cos (2 π t + π/6) where A1=2 cm and A2=4 cm. Construct the
Lissajous figure of the combined motion using the rotating vector notation. The points have
to be neatly labelled and give the direction in which the object moves in the x-y plane. [4M]
5. Find the frequency of the resultant motion when a sinusoidal vibration of x1=sin (10πt) is
combined with x2=cos (12πt-π/4). [2M]

6. A mass-spring system of m=3 kg and a spring constant of k=11 N/m initially oscillates with
an amplitude of 20 cm. The amplitude falls to three-fourths of this initial value after four
complete cycles. (i) Find the value of b. (ii) what is the energy “lost” during these four

distance between nodes. (c) What is the transverse displacement of a particle of the string at
the position x= 1.6 cm at time t=1.5 s? [3M]
10. The angular position of the first minimum in a double slit arrangement, is found to be 0.13°.
The setup is illuminated with a light of wavelength 546 nm. The screen is at a distance of 55
cm from the slits. (a) Find the distance between the two slits and (b) Find the distance of the
second maxima from the center of the screen. [3M]
11. White light at normal incidence illuminates a thin film. If the thickness of the film is 400 nm
and the refractive index is 1.45, what wavelengths of light (400-700 nm) will be seen on
reflection? [3M]
