LEARNING COMPETENCIES 1. Describe the historical development of theories that explain the origin of the Universe
2. Compare the different hypotheses explaining the origin of the Solar System
3. Describe the characteristics of Earth that are necessary to support life
4. Explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems, across whose boundaries matter and energy flow
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOME At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:
1. describe the structure and composition of the Universe
2. state the different hypothesis that preceded the Big Bang Theory of the Origin of the Universe
3. explain the red-shift and how it used as proof of an expanding universe
4. identify the large scale and small scale properties of the solar system
5. recognize the difference in the physical and chemical properties between the Earth and its neighboring planes
6. identify the factors that allow a planet to support life.
TIME ALLOTMENT 240mins
LESSON OUTLINE:
During the lesson, the learners will:
1. Introduction: Introduction of the learning objectives
2. Motivation: Question and Answer
3. Instruction and Delivery: Interactive Lecture
4. Practice: Concept Mapping
5. Enrichment: Home Activity
6. Evaluation: Paper and Pencil Test
MATERIALS Chalk and Board, Marker
RESOURCES 1. Earth Science (Quinto and Florida) Mutya Publishing House, Inc.
2. Earth Science - Rex Book Store
3. Earth Science (Refran and Tolentino) Vibal Group, Inc.
PROCEDURE MEETING LEARNERS’ NEEDS
INTRODUCTION Learners will read – aloud the following
Introduction/Communicating of the learning objectives objectives

INSTRUCTION/DELIVERY
Interactive Lecture/Discussion/Simulation
- Origin of the Universe
- Composition, structure, and age
- The Stars and its life cycle
- The Galaxy
- The expanding Universe
- Origin of the system
- Planets and their characteristics
- Earth systems
- Comparison of the Features of the Planets
PRACTICE Learners will have a practice regarding
- Make a concept map about the similarities and differences of the planets the discussion
- How energy and mass is exchanged among the subsystems. Use different types of lines and boxes to differentiate between
matter or materials and energy.
ENRICHMENT
Assignment:
The impact of man to the environment has become so massive that scientists are proposing the addition of man or the
‘anthroposphere’ to the Earth system.
Write an essay not exceeding 200 words on how man has altered the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and
as a consequence, the Earth System as whole.
Is the Solar System unique or rare? What is the possibility of finding a similar system within the Milky
Way Galaxy? What about an Earth like planet?
EVALUATION
Paper and Pencil Test.
What is the fate of the universe? Will the universe continue to expand or will it eventually contract because of gravity?
