LESSON PLAN
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON ORGANISATION
Year Level: 6 Time: 9:45-10:35 Date: 11 /6/19 Students’ Prior Knowledge:

Learning Area: Maths – Backtracking #2  They identify and explain strategies for
finding unknown quantities in number
sentences involving the four operations.
(Yr 5 standard)
 Students understand that an equation can
be inversed by substituting opposite
operations
 They are able to use inversion to find the
missing piece of an equation
Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum

Continue and create sequences involving whole

numbers, fractions and decimals. Describe the rule
used to create the sequence (ACMNA133)
Select and apply efficient mental and written strategies
and appropriate digital technologies to solve problems
involving all four operations with whole
numbers (ACMNA123)

General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

Literacy Numeracy ICT Critical and Ethical Personal and Intercultural
competence creative thinking behaviour Social understanding
competence
Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia Sustainability
histories and cultures

Proficiencies: Problem Solving, Fluency

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Find backtracking equations in literacy questions

 Further their understanding of inverting equations to find the missing link

1

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

Write some differentiating backtracking questions that are

literacy based. (money, age, sport)
Have the differentiation sheets on standby

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
I think the lesson went really well. They are engaging with the topic more than I have seen them
engage with an equation-based math topic. Everyone finished the first page and started the
second. 5 students finished the second sheet.

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

The effort that I put into the worksheets is really paying off. The students are almost actively
excited when they know they get to do one of my maths sheets because of the pop culture
references I add to them. They almost forget that it’s just regular math.
I did simple but useful revision at the beginning of the lesson.
[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
.
Welcome the students back form IT.

Sit them on the mat

Have a couple simple literacy questions already written up on the board.

If I spend half the money in my bank account, then I get given $6 so now I
have $30, how much did I have in the first place?

If you double my age then add 10, the answer is 32. How old am I?

Learning to see these backtracking questions in written answers will really

help us understand the theory behind it. A) because we are writing the
equations ourselves and B) because they are grounded in reality. These
questions are all about real life.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

There will be 2 different Literacy Backtracking sheets.

Each have a different theme.

2

If the students finish the first they get to do the second.

If they finish both they receive a tile and there is another bonus sheet ready.
About 25 minutes once the groups are set and ready to go.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

Bring the students back to the class.

Inform that a test will be tomorrow but we will do some revision beforehand.
It will be a test of my own design.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

Send the students recess

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

Over the shoulder marking during worksheets

Building to formal assessment next lesson

Great Scott! – Let’s Backtrack to the Future

1. If you double the money in your bank account, then you spend $50 on a DeLorean and
you are left with $75, how much money did you start with?

b) How much money do you have if you’re left with $200

c) How much money do you have if you’re left with $20

2. If you half my age, then add 20, then subtract 4 you get 28. How old am I?

b) How old am I if you get 54?

c) How old am I if you get 17?

3. If your soccer team’s score is multiplied by 3, then you subtract 4, you get your
opponent’s teams score of 2. Did your team win?

b) If your teams score is divided by 2, then you add 2, you get your opponent’s team score of 5.
Did your team win?

4. How many goals did the eagles kick in the first half if they scored 5 behinds and went
into the locker room with 41 points?

b) At the end of the game, Eagles finished with 71 points and kicked 11 behinds. How many
goals?

The Empire Strikes Backtrack

Equations… I am your Father!

1. If you triple the money in your bank account, then spend $37 on a replica
lightsaber, then spend $12 at KFC, then you get paid $150, your final
balance is $191. How much did you start with?

2. If you half the money in your account, then spend $1000 on a new prosthetic
hand, then get paid $350 for trying to save cloud city, your final balance is -
$100. How much did you start with? And who are you?

3. Your age is divided by 3, then subtract 10, then add 49 you get 52. What
year were you born?

b) Why did I pick this year as the answer?

4. How many goals did the West Coast Eagles kick if they got 16 behinds and
ended on 88?

b) The dockers kicked one more goal than the eagles but only kicked 9 behinds.
Who won? What was the score?
