After playing the game, the teacher sets off with another game to
introduce the lesson. The game is called “charades”. In this game,
the teacher will ask for 3 pairs of students. The teacher says the
mechanics of the game. She wrote 3 words: dancing, singing, and
cooking on three pieces of paper. The teacher calls out the three
pairs of students and let them decide who will guess the word and
act it out. She asks the students, who will act out the word, to have a

seconds to guess the word given to them.

Alright! Now that we know a little bit about each other, we are going Ohhhh

Very good!

Our lesson for today involves a form of verb that ends in -ing

We are going to learn all about gerund and gerund phrases.

Are you all ready to learn? Yes, Ma’am!”

TEACHER STUDENT
C. Presentation and Practice Activities Task 3. What is a Gerund?
The teacher starts discussing the first subtopic which is gerund.

Gerunds are verb forms that always end in -ing and act like nouns.

Being a noun, a gerund can function, please take note, as a

subject, subject complement, direct object, direct object, or
object of the preposition.

Kindly read the example sentences. 1. Swimming is John’s passion.

2. John’s sport is swimming.
3. John enjoys swimming.
4. John gives swimming complete
dedication.
5. John earns medals by swimming.

What do you think is the gerund used in these sentences? Swimming.

The teacher underlines the word “swimming” in each sentence.

Very good!

Task 4. The Functions of a Gerund

The teacher continues to the functions of a gerund in the given
sentences but gives first the meaning of each function.

Now before identifying the functions of each gerund in the

sentences that I have given. Let us first have a brief overview on the
meanings of each function of a gerund.
A subject is the word or group of words that tells us what or whom
the speaker or the writer is talking about. A subject complement
completes the meaning of the linking verb and renames or explains
the subject. A direct object names the receiver of the action and
completes the meaning of the verb. It usually answers the question
what or whom. However, an indirect object tells to whom or to what
the action is directed and for whom or to what the action is
performed. And last is the object of the preposition which is a
noun that follows a preposition.

Task 5. Guess the Function of the Gerund

The teacher asks the students to guess the function of the gerund in
each sentence. The teacher has the functions written on a paper
and the student will have to match it on the sentences that they
have read earlier.

I’ve said earlier that a gerund can function as a subject, subject (The five students come in front and match
complement, direct object, indirect object, or object of the the functions of each gerund in the
preposition. Now that you now the meanings of these functions… sentences provided)
Who would like to guess the function of each gerund in each
sentence? I need five volunteers to come here in front and match
these functions to the sample sentences.

The teacher checks the answers. She asks questions to the

volunteers as to why they chose to match the function to these
sentences.

Let us check if the answers are correct.

In number 1, you said that the gerund here is used as a subject. Because the gerund swimming is what the

talking about.
Very good! A gerund is considered as a subject when it is what the
writer or the speaker is talking about in the sentence.

For number 2, you have matched the function subject complement. Because the gerund swimming explained

Great! Again, an object of the preposition is a noun that follows a
preposition.

Any questions? No Ma’am.

Let’s proceed.

Task 6. The Gerund Phrase and its Functions

The teacher moves on to the second part of the lesson. The teacher
discusses the meaning of gerund phrase.

In the previous lesson, we learned that a gerund is a verbal that

ends in –ing. It can either be a single word or a phrase.
Please read all together the meaning of a gerund phrase. A gerund phrase includes the gerund, plus
any modifiers and complements. Like
single-word gerunds, gerund phrases
always function as nouns. They can act as
subjects, direct objects, indirect
objects, subject complements, or objects
of the preposition in a
sentence.
The teacher gives examples to the student and will go over each
sentence to help the students identify the gerund phrase in each
sentence as well as its function.
Okay, now I have here examples of gerund phrases.

Let’s read each sentence carefully. Number 1… 1. Flying kites on a windy day is a fun
activity both for the young and old.
So, who can try to underline the gerund phrase in this sentence? (A student raises his hand and stands up
