LESSON ORGANISATION

Year Level: Pre Primary Students’ Prior Knowledge:

Time:9.30-10.20
Date: Term 2, Week 8, Wednesday  They have not yet done any work on making
educated estimations
Learning Area: Mathematics  They have done the activity roll, write it, and
count it before in class a few times.

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Make estimations about the number of objects in a container with appropriate reasoning
 count to and from 50.

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation:

 Containers filled with objects ready

 Roll it, write it, count it materials

LESSON DELIVERY Resources/References
(Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions): .
Time
Motivation and Lesson Introduction:
 Lesson Introduction conducted on the mat.
 Discuss with the children what is an estimation and what is an
educated estimation. Getting the students to say the word estimation,
asking them what they think is an estimation.
o An estimation is when you make a guess or predict
something before it happens.
o An educated estimation is using what you already know to
help you make the estimation/ guess
 Mat activity, show to the students a jar that is filled with random
objects getting them to list some of the items they see in the jar.
 Get the students to make an educated guess by saying we’ve already
counted X amount so does it have to be a bigger or a smaller number
then that? Once the class has decided on an educated guess pull all
the objects out and count to see how close they are to getting the
correct number.
 Discuss to the students each of the following activities for the pull and
play lesson.

Lesson Development:

Activity 1: Estimation Station- Pre Service Teacher directed

 Working with 3 students at a times.
 They will be given a container that is filled with random objects, they
are to make an educated guess as to how many objects they think is
in the container, providing reasoning.
 They will start off my getting a container each, they are to have a look
at it, encourage them to pick it up and move it around, then to take a
photo of the container and go outside and record their reasoning as to
why they think that amount
 Then come inside and count the amount of objects that is in the
container adding the number onto their photo.

Activity 2: Roll, write it, count it- parent help directed

 Working with 3 students at a time, each having a laminated mat that
has three section on it being the roll it square, write it square and the
count it square. They will also be given dice, counters and whiteboard
markers
 Students are to being by rolling a dice, dependant on ability level.
 Then they are to write the number in numerals with a marker or
writing the number for extending some students.
 Then they are to use natural wood chip counters to count out that
number
 Repeat 2 times.

Activity 3 – Mentor teacher Directed

This activity will be run by my mentor teacher and the activity is currently
undecided, but it might be number formation.

Students will have access to block corner, home corner, writing table and mat
work.

2
Lesson Closure:
 Lesson conclusion will be conducted on the mat.
 Discuss with the students what is an estimation and what is an
educated estimation.
 On the whiteboard a 100 numbers chart will be displayed with some
sticky notes covering some of the numbers, students will be asked to
make an educated estimation on what number they think is behind
the sticky note, and their reasoning as to why they think that.
 This will be finished when all sticky notes have been successfully
identified.

Assessment:
 Activity 1
o Checklist of are they able to give, good, satisfactory or limited
on their ability to make an educated estimation and reasoning
from see saw.
