Chapter II

Methodology

This chapter presents the design stages of the project, development process

construction procedure, tools and equipment, and supplies and materials. This also includes

the materials involved for the development of the project.

Design Stages of the Project

This section covers the different stages conducted and accomplished by the

researchers in designing the project. This includes the pre-design stage, the development of

the actual design and design modifications based from the results of the preliminary testing

of the device.

The pre design stage involved the actual gathering of the data and information

necessary as basis for carrying out an actual plan for the construction of the project.

Consultations from experts and opinions from the adviser and panel members were solicited

to complete this stage.

The actual design stage involved determining the components best suited for the

project. It involved drawing the circuitry and creating diagrams which will suffice the purpose

of the project. This stage also involved determining the best methods that should be

undertaken in order to properly construct and assemble the project.

The design stage may also involve design modification which may occur after

preliminary testing of how the device functions. Design modification may be done in order to

adjust and improve the functionality of the completed project.

Project Development Process

This part of the study provides a discussion of the major processes undertaken by

the researchers in undertaking this project development. This includes designing, estimating,

constructing and assembling, and testing and evaluating of the completed project.

Designing

In this stage the researchers started with problem identification. The purpose of this

project design is to modernize and upgrade the utilization and system of existing lockers.

This project is to provide the enough security for their belongings to satisfy the user’s needs.

The researchers aimed to create an E-Locker for Batangas State University JPLPC Campus

Malvar Batangas. The researchers thought of a design that can be help the student in their

things. The ideas and information that helped and guided the researchers were from their

interviews and observation. The specifications of the needed materials were also identified

and the arrangement of the product was designed.

Estimating

In this stage the researcher estimated the cost of supplies and materials used in

constructing the project. The researcher selected the proper materials which are of good

quality with low cost and which are available locally. Canvass from hardware supply stores

were conducted to decide on the best materials to be used and to determine the estimate of

the total project cost.

7

Constructing and Assembling

In this process, the researchers rendered the time in gathering all the parts and

components used in constructing and assembling the project. The researchers constructed

the project following the planned procedures. Step by step processes had been obtained to

guarantee the best output.

The construction and assembly of the project consists of two major stages. First was

the programming of the RFID system and the construction of the locker. Secondly was the

installation the RFID system in the locker.

Testing and Evaluating

All necessary tests had been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the project.

Testing and evaluation allowed the researcher to implement improvements in the design and

features of the completed project. The researchers made several trial and error testing to

achieve the projects fullest function. The researchers have noted important instructions to be

followed by the users for the full utilization of its function and performance.

Project Work Breakdown Schedule

The project development process lasted for almost for 10 weeks. The different stages

and the time spent in the completion of each stage were given in table 1. Table 1 presents

the work sequence of activities and the corresponding duration for the completion of the

project.

The table reveals that it took the researchers two weeks to come up with the design

of the project. Careful planning was carried to achieve the simplest yet the most effective
8

design for the project. Another week was spent for estimating the cost of the supplies,

materials, and components that were used in the project. The researchers went to suppliers

and retail outlets where the supplies and materials were sold. Cheap yet materials of good

quality were chosen by the researchers.

Testing and Evaluating

The construction and assembly phase of the development was the most difficult stage

for the researchers; it took five weeks before the project was completed. The researchers

constructed the frame and once completed the assembly of the parts and components

followed. A two weeks was spent for final testing and evaluation of the functionality of the

finished project.

Construction Procedures

This part of the study gives a visual presentation and a discussion of the systematic

steps that were carried out by the researchers in developing this project; the E-Locker. The

construction and assembly procedures that were undertaken to come up with the project

output was divided into three stages. The construction stage of the project consists of two

major stages. First was the programming of the RFID system and the construction of the

locker . Secondly was the installation the RFID system in the locker.

A. Programming the RFID system

1. Install the Arduino Ide for programing the software for the Arduino RFID project.
10

2.Assemble the electronics parts based on the diagram.(See in the picture below)

3.Installing RFID library in the Arduino Ide to start the programming.

11

4. Create code RFID including the relation of servo, buzzer and led.

5.Upload final codes to the arduino.

12

6. Test for the completion.

B. Construction of the locker.

1.Cut the Anchor Plywood. Carefully measured and cut the cabinet pieces form 49x44 ( 49

meter/160.761 Ft, of its Height and with the measure of its width is 144.357 Ft/44 cm).
13

2. Assemble the parts. Use of Wood Glue and Nails and carefully assemble the “box” part

of the cabinet.

3. Adding the Wood Sticker.

14

4. Cut and attaching the door with dimension of 49m/160.761 Ft and 44m/144.357 Ft.

5. Attaching the Arduino RFID in the Door.

Tools and Equipment

This part of the paper presents the tools and equipment used by the researchers in

the construction of the project. The respective functions of each tool and equipment are given

in table 2.
16

Table 2

project in terms of quantity, unit, description, and unit price and total price. From the table it

can be concluded the researchers have spent a total of Php. 1,653.00 in the purchase of all
18

the needed supplies and materials. All the materials are locally available and can easily be

found in the market or hardware.

Quality Control Process

Quality refers to the distinct characteristic of having a good the product. Quality is a

broad- based characteristic or property consists of several well-defined technical

considerations. It is the special identifying nature of the general standard of a product. To

maintain the product quality of this project, the researchers chose the best tools and materials

for the construction of the project, from the selection of the materials that were purchased to

the use of the appropriate tools and equipment to perform the necessary job.

To ensure the quality of the completed project, the researchers first checked the

functionality of all the materials and components for construction. The researchers made sure

that the chosen materials were in good condition and were able to perform their intended

purpose. During the construction of the project, the researchers consulted professionals and

technical persons to make sure that the procedures are carried out properly. Enough time

were taken so that each step in the construction procedure was done correctly.

After the completion of the project, testing and evaluation measures were undertaken

to ensure that the device is working properly. Adjustments were made to achieve the best

possible output that the project can perform. Safety and precautionary measures for the

operator of the device were also considered. The finished project was made through the use
19

of quality parts, properly constructed, and evaluated, and have shown to be good in

performing its function.

Financial Component

To obtain the financial viability of the completed project, the incurred cost of

expenditures in its development was tabulated and presented in Table 4.

Table 4

Table 4 shows the expenses on the different variables that are involved in the

construction of a E-locker in Batangas State University JPLPC Malvar Batangas. It can be

gleaned from the table the researchers have spent a Php 1,653.00 for the completion of the

project. The cost of supplies and materials composed the biggest part of the total sum.
