Journal Article:
• Name of Journal: Women in Industrial Engineering: Stereotypes, Persistence, and Perspectives
• Author: Catherine E. Brawner, Michelle M. Camacho, Susan M. Lord, Russell A. Long, and
Matthew W. Ohland
• Year: 2012
• Summary: Industrial engineering, out of all disciples of engineering, attracts and graduates the
most woman. This journal questions why undergraduate women are drawn to industrial
engineering over other disciplines. These researchers used many methods, including using
quantitative analyses to see how women performed academically. They also used the
university’s industrial engineering websites to better their understanding. They found that
women are attracted to industrial engineering for reasons including flexibility, career
opportunities, a feeling that it is more feminine, and warmth. They also found that industrial
engineering emphasizes leadership opportunities that are just as essential to mechanical
engineers.

Theses and Dissertations:

• Name of Dissertation: Statistical Learning Tools with Food Science
• Author: Jessica C. Hacker
• Year: 2016
• Brief Summary: The food science department has many issues that require research in order to
protect the food that gets put out. The team at the University of Arkansas’ Division of
Agriculture has been studying the gastrointestinal microbial community in broiler chicken in
order to control bacteria. The main focus of this thesis is to show that statistical learning tools in
machines could serve as effective tools within food science. Machine learning could give a lot of
information on the microbial data offered from the DNA of the chickens. The team performed
an analysis called QIIME to see if the treatment had a significant effect on the chickens. QIIME
allows the researches to see if there is a significant difference between the treatments, similarly
to how a machine would perform.
