180 Lit/min of air with dry bulb of 35oC, wet bulb of 10oC are
mixed with 400 L/min of air at 40oC and dew point of 15oC. The
resulting air is then passes through an adiabatic humidifier where
it is cooled to 20oC. Take UGa as 4500 Watts/m3-K. Determine:
a) Dry bulb temperature of air entering the humidifier
b) Make up water rate (kg/min) needed for the humidifier
c) Water temperature maintained in the humidifier
d) Volume of Humidifier needed
e) Mass Transfer Coefficient, k’a

2. The air in a theater 40 m by 25 m by 15 m is to be changed every
10 min and is to be supplied at 20oC and 50% Humidity. Outside air is
at 38oC and 85% Humidity. It is planned to cool and dehumidify the
outside air by the use of a packed tower. The air leaving the tower is to
be reheated to the desired temperature before being blown into the
theater. Cooling water is available 10oC. Take UGa = 4000 Watts/m3-K,
entering water mass velocity to dehumidifier = 4500 kg/m2-hr, dry air
mass velocity = 5000 kg/m2-hr. Find:
a) Diameter and Height of tower
b) Exit temperature of the air and water in the dehumidifier
c) Mass transfer coefficient, k’a

3. A packed cooling tower with a volume of 50 m3 gave the following test data:
WATER: Entering Temperature = 40oC Exit Temperature = 30oC
AIR: Entering: 22oC, 35% Relative Humidity
Exit: 32oC dry bulb, 31oC Wet bulb
Flow rate of Entering Air = 1500 m3/min
Flow Rate of Entering Water = 2500 L/min
a) Determine the Over-all heat and mass transfer coefficients for the tower
(UGa, and k’a)
b) Suppose the entering air is at 30oC but with the same absolute humidity, and the
same entering rates of dry air and water are used, to what temperature will the water
be cooled? Assume that the over-all heat and mass transfer coefficients are constant.
