Running Head: THE FOUR MAJOR CONCEPTUAL BLOCKS

Abstract

This paper will discuss four major conceptual blocks which delay creativity in the minds

process to problem solving when dealing with an organization. This paper will explain what are

the four major conceptual blocks are which is consistency, commitment, compression, and

complacency. This came from Whetten and Cameron’s in the year 2002 who wrote an article

about conceptual blocks. So I know you’re thinking what is a conceptual block? What that is

multiple thinking barriers that keep people jammed in a thinking pattern which. is unfertile. The

blocks stop creativity and free thinking which is extremely helpful. The blocks help leaders

promote communication-based creativity. They do this by embrace creativity as part of learning,

Use the most effective strategies, think of creativity as a skill, participate in or create a program

to develop creative skills, use emotional connections, and use a creativity model. So let’s get into

the four major conceptual blocks. Allows with my action plan in place to make major impacts on

conceptual blocks.
Running Head: THE FOUR MAJOR CONCEPTUAL BLOCKS

Constancy

The first block I will be talking to you about is constancy. What constancy is when

someone becomes devoted to one way of seeing a problem and retaining one approach to define

and solving that same problem. The issue here is steadiness in cratering a habit where someone is

likely to consistently use the same methodology to their approach in creative problem

solving. This reminds me of a time when I worked for this security company called Securitas.

One day my boss hired me on the spot because he doesn’t reminder giving me the week of

thanksgiving off and when I came into work that following Monday and said I pulled a “no call

no show” so I’m fired”. I said no you gave me the week off and he walked over to me and placed

his hand on my back and said leave. So a week and a half later he called me and apologized

because he didn’t reminder giving me the week off but the schedule book showed that I did have

that week off. So instead of him going back to the book to check but no he was so fixed minded

that he fired me for one week.

Commitment

The second block is Commitment. What the Commitment block means is a abstract block

because individuals become committed to an idea or solution they stay with it. We become so

fixed in our thinking that we do not consider other another possibility’s. This type of block have

shown that commitment has lead to some very silly decisions. I say this because working for

Times fitness my boss had a lot of bad times making poor decisions on keeping the same price

for every month then showing different ones or giving special pricing holidays to have more

members commit to the gym. By him not listen to his employee basically saying we should try

special deals. By him keeping the same prices for every month we lost members because of our

high prices and him committed to the money not the people.

Compression

The third block is Compression. Compression is when people look at a problem in a

narrow scale relevant information. As problem solvers must be able to determine what

information is factual and important so we can define the problem and develop the best solution.

As we work towards bigger things and position comes with bigger responsibility. I worked for

this company called L and W and I used to run this machine called the 2001. So one day my line

boss comes over and ask me why I haven’t been pushing out a lot of parts on the hour. I told him

that it’s been a lot of down time. Meaning the machines needed fixing at times and parts needed

to be bought to me. So he just felt that I wasn’t working hard. See he didn’t see the obvious but

started making assumptions.

Complacency

The finial block is Complacency. This block typically is just pure laziness and in most

cases can get people in lots of trouble. To solve problems, we must ask questions to get the

information we need to define the problem and generate the appropriate solution. However,

asking individuals questions can raise defense mechanisms which lead to interpersonal conflict

and resistance.

Why does blocks happen?

These blocks occur because people are creatures of behaviors, what I mean is when there

is a set way established, we are going to pick and choose to continue down that path that

individual picks and stay with it. We all make mistakes but we don’t live in a world where

everything is perfect so people that have blocks turn them into lessons of correction.

Promoting Communication Based Creativity?

 Leaders can have different people in their company lead their group

 Connecting to their employees build that banned where you just don’t do it for

yourself but for others

 Telling people, they are doing well or great job at whatever they are doing

because people like to be Enlighted by their actions

 Having that open door policy so you can make people feel comfortable working

and building that connection.

Action Plan

Purpose: To see what types of conceptual blocks an employee is having and evaluating it to fix

it.

Goal; Understand, develop, and fix any conceptual blocks I am having in a work setting

Evidence of Success: Understand what block your facing and I the land boy

Evaluation Process: Making sure everyone creates special and working well.

Conclusion:

Conclusion: We as people are very deep thinkers when it comes to making decisions and

solve problems. Thinkers don’t accept information off the back but basically try to find more

info on the problem at hand. Recognizing the four major conceptual blocks that hold back

creativity are constancy, commitment, compression and complacency. Classifying each of these

blocks can be great for leaders and employees. When you understand what block you have and

can deal with it meaning solving the problem that would be amazing.
