ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analyze noun phrase as an object in novel “The Lost Hero”
by Rick Riordan. This research applies the theory of syntax from Noel-Burton. The authors use
the method of documentation in gathering data with the steps as follows.

(1) Read and understand the structure of noun phrase in novel. (2) Marking every sentences
that contain noun phrase as an object (3) Put the data together in a data sheet. After the data is
collected and analyzed, the authors make the tree diagram.

INTRODUCTION

The Background of the Study

Sentence is the smallest unit of language in the form of oral and written to express an
idea, feelings and thoughts. A collection of elements of phrases and clauses will form a
sentence. A phrase is a set of words that function as constituents in a sentence structure. Phrases
usually have one main word from a few words called a phrase head. The phrase itself consists
of 6 classes of words including: noun, verbal, adjective, adverb, pronoun, and preposition. A
combination of several phrases will form a clause whereby the clause itself can be called a
sentence because it consists of subject and predicate.
Phrase is a unity of language consisting of two or more words but the combination of
the word raises a new meaning from the previous word. In learning English, we will find phrase
divided into eight groups one of them is noun phrase. Noun phrase is a phrase that plays with
noun - person, place or object - and its explanation (modifier) that distinguishes. Noun phrase
is used when single noun is not specific enough to explain a noun.

1
Noun phrase is one of the requirements to form a sentence. So I decided to research
the use of a noun phrase as an object in novel “The Lost Hero” by Rick Riordan.

Problem of Research
The study focused how is the use of noun phrase as an object in Novel “The Lost
Hero” by Rick Riordan.

Question of Research
Based on the problem above, this study aimed to describe some question of noun
phrase as an object in novel ‘The Lost Hero” by Rick Riordan :
1. How is use of noun phrase as an object in novel “The Lost Hero”?
2. What is the function of noun phrase in novel “The Lost Hero”?

Theoretical Review

Delahunty and Garvey (2010:289) NP has more elements than the head, it may
contain one or more premodifiers (modifiers that precede the head) and/or one or more
postmodifiers (modifiers that follow the head).

Noel Burton – Roberts (2016:141) In the basic case, the two immediate constituents
of Noun Phrase are Determiner (DET) and Nominal (NOM). DET always has NOM as its
sister. NOM is always a level of NP-structure intermediate between the phrasal (NP) level and
the lexical (N) level.
Richards and schmidts (2002:366) stated that noun is a word which (a) can occur as
the subject and object of a verb or the object (complement) of a preposition (b0 can be modified
by and adjective (c) can be used with determiner.
Anne Lobeck and Kristin Denham (2014:23-24)You may know the old adage that a
noun is a person, place, or thing. And yes, this is somewhat accurate, but, as we’ll find
throughout this book, definitions that rely on meaning alone don’t always capture the kinds of
knowledge we actually use to identify the syntactic category of a word.
Delahunty and Garvey (2010:72-73) Phrases are grammatical units composed of one
or more words that function as unified parts of clauses. They are traditionally viewed as not
containing both a subject and a predicate, e.g., this old house, the Sopranos, crime scene
investigator, should do important work, in a balloon, very wicked, are all phrases. But this old
and should do important are not complete phrases. Phrases are constructed around a head word,

2
that is, the main word of the phrase. This may be the only word in the phrase, like Cats and
purr in Cats purr. Phrases may also include modifiers, objects/complements.

Methodology of Research
The method used for analyze the data in this research is descriptive qualitative
method. Method Qualitative descriptive is a research procedure that produces descriptive data
in the form of written or spoken words and observable persons and behaviors.

Analysis Data
This part presented data analysis of 7 data noun phrase as an object taken from novel
“The Lost Hero” by Rick Riordan in 2010. The data analyses based on the noun phrase
construction from the Noel – Burton theories. Here are the analyses of noun phrase as an object

Conclusion

Novel is an extended work of written, narrative, prose fiction, usually in story form.
This research analyses about noun phrase as an object in novel “The Lost Hero” by Rick
Riordan. Noun Phrase in the basic was formed by Determiner and Nominal. For the determiner
not only article that used to formed noun phrase but there is a small set of words which perform
the same function as the article.
Based on data analysis finally the writer concludes that there are noun phrase as an
object which successfully have been analyzed. The result show that noun phrase not only have
function as a subject but can be an object as in novel “The Lost Hero” by Rick Riordan.
