Unit 23 – Personal Media Profile

Suitability for audience:

The audience for my personal media profile and services are both male and female aged 18+. I am more
likely to attract both genders due to providing services for all different types of businesses from
photography and beauty therapy to sports coaching and personal training. Although, I do not want to
alienate any potential clients. For example, gay or lesbian couples or non-nuclear families. I am open to
work with and work for a wide range of clients. In order to make my products suitable for the audience I
have made sure that I have chosen similar fonts, images, colour scheme and graphics throughout. I have
mostly chosen the Verdana font and typed any text in capitals so it is bold and easy for my audience to
read. The colour scheme I have chosen is quite simple and professional. The light colours I have used on a
lot of my products make them more vibrant and eye-catching to attract an audience of potential clients.

I have developed a logo that includes a secondary image of a four leaved clover, following an Irish theme
due to the name of my business being ‘Shannon’s Designs’. Shannon is an area in Ireland whilst also being
an Irish name. Therefore I thought it would be interesting and unique to use this for my logo. The logo had
a strong colour scheme of bright green to portray the Irish theme and to help attract the audience
through bright colours. My products theme is suitable for the target audience because the target audience
is 18+ so they will be a lot more mature than children therefore they will understand the Irish theme and
find it very interesting and professional. The text I have used on my logo is clear and bold so that the
audience can read the name of my business clearly and be able to research it and find it easily.

Suitability for Purpose:

The purpose of my personal media profile is to promote my graphic designing business. It should inform
the audience of the services and products that I provide and set me apart from my competition. It should
also provide details of these services including costs – this will encourage potential clients to request my
services because I will give them the information they need before they order. In order to encourage new
clients I would also wish to include special offers for them. I feel the products appear professional and
look very eye-catching. My documents must appear professional if I wish to encourage new clients to pay
for my services.

Overall, I think my products are informative and contain the correct balance of written information and
images. People that wish to hire a graphic designer will want to know what services they can undertake.
When making further changes to my work, I would consider including pictures and images of the work
that I have done for some of my clients. This will encourage new clients to use my services and will also
demonstrate how successful I am as a professional graphic designer.

I have used many primary images within my work. As a female graphic designer, I wish to send out the
correct message to my clients and the community. I avoided creating images and work that could be
perceived as objectification of females. I have also avoided making any statements that would be false or
over exaggerated. Statements that are not always possible and easy to do.

Professionalism:

I feel my work is very professional in appearance and content. Each product is very strong but I feel I could
spend more time developing my website. I will now compare my work with professional products to
demonstrate just how professional they are.

My Flyer Professional Flyer

Discussion:
The differences and similarities between my flyer and the professional photographer’s flyer are
quite clear. Firstly, both of the flyers have a consistent colour scheme. My flyer has a light, positive
colour scheme of bright colours such as orange, pink, and white. Whereas, the professional flyer
has a simple black and white and slightly dull coloured images colour scheme. I have made my work
professional by following a consistent colour scheme of bright attractive colours and also adding my
logo. I have also used sentence case text to make my flyer look more professional. I have provided
information about my product quality which makes my business more appealing to the audience.
More text is used in my flyer as people pick them up from places such as stores and are handed
them to read so I have made it suitable for its purpose, providing the audience with important
information that they need to know before hiring me. The primary photos I have used show the
appearance of my work and makes my flyer more eye-catching.
I feel the main way I could improve upon the appearance of my work is by adding a bit more
important information such as the prices for each offers and services I have in store for my clients.
For example, how much a logo created by me would cost. This would allow potential clients to
compare prices between mine and other graphic designers to see where they would get their
money’s worth with.

My Poster Professional Poster

Discussion:
There are a few similarities and differences between mine and the professional photographers
poster. I have made my work professional by adding a range of shapes and vector images to make it
look more creative. There is a consistent colour scheme of bright colours such as green which
attract the audience and improves the appearance of the poster overall. I have included primary
and secondary vector images to portray the idea of graphic designing such as a computer. I have
also limited the amount of text as posters are often read in passing and too much text makes them
unsuitable for their purpose. The secondary graphics also help the appearance of my work as it
makes it more visual and eye-catching.
I feel as though the main way I could improve upon the appearance of my work is by using more
images to show more of the services I provide such as logos. This would grab the attention of a
wider audience because I am showing more services that would cater for more people.

My Website Professional Website

Discussion:
The difference between my website and a professional photographer’s website is quite clear. My
website’s text, background, main banner and buttons all follow a consistent colour scheme. This
consists of bright colours - this makes my work look a lot more professional because it has been
well thought through. The professional photographers website has a neutral, consistent colour
scheme all the way through and is quite plain which is helpful for potential clients because it is not
in-your-face and distracting. Whereas my website has quite a few areas to look at but gives
potential clients plenty of photos to look at.

I could improve upon the appearance of my website by changing my background so that it looks a
bit more professional. The background I have currently is quite blurry and low quality. The colour
could also be a bit darker or a green colour to match my logo. With every aspect of my website
looking professional, I will attract a bigger audience and grab the attention of potential clients.

1. Use of Social Media

I have used social media to a great extent to portray my graphic design business. I have used
Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest and created an online website to advertise my business. All of
these allowed me to show my work and services to potential clients. I was able to portray images
and talents through to my audience and show my audience how I can cater to their specific needs
and wishes to make them happy. I was also able to place captions and text with the images of my
work when posting them to explain what I have done and what offers I have on. This worked to an
advantage for me when using social media.

2. Use of Photography

I have used a wide range of images in all of my products including primary and secondary images.
This is because different products for different businesses and companies require different content,
for example, a photographer’s poster would range from their own primary wedding photos or
scenery photos depending on their style. A wide range of different images in my products gives the
audience the idea that I am willing to cater to all of their needs and wishes. It also creates the idea
that I am a successful graphic designer because I am talented in all areas of graphic designing. This

comes to my advantage because I will attract a wider audience that have different needs and wishes
and potentially make more money from clients by catering to everyone and doing different jobs and
services. I could improve my products by including more primary images of my own.

3. Repurposing of media

To re-purpose information is to adapt it or amend it for a different purpose. Within this project I
have frequently changed information to use it in a different format as a differently way of
communicating with my target audience.

When making my flyer, I used the poster I had made. Due to posters mostly containing images and
not as much information and flyers containing more information than images, I used this to turn my
poster into a flyer. I simply deleted some images I had on the poster and replaced them with extra,
important information about my business that potential clients will be interested to know. Posters
you read when you walk past and flyers are handed out to people for them to read. Therefore, flyers
tend to have more written information. Posters tend to have more eye-catching headings and
pictures to capture the attention of the audience.

In my poster and flyer there is very similar information but it is presented in a different way. The
images are larger and there are more of them in the poster. There is more written details in the flyer
as the audience will have time to read them.

I have simplified this information even further for use in my interactive banners for my website.
These are displayed in an animation for only 3 seconds at a time. This gives the audience very little
time to read the information. It is therefore important that there are only large titles to inform the
audience about the content. The pictures should be clear, eye-catching and encourage the users to
click on them and enter the site.
