UNDERSTANDING HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Field Trip Guidelines

Introduction:
One of general objectives of Block V is to understand what health system is and
how it works. Specifically Block V introduces various concepts related to the
management system of health service institution. Managing health care institution such
as hospital is very specific and complex, because if we come to the detail of what services
that hospital produces, we will see that beside the health services hospital also conduct
some others services like hotel (room renting), restaurant (food), travel (ambulance), etc.
That’s why many issues arise and problems related to hospital management emerge.

As a service institution, in one hand the hospital should provide good quality of
health service for patients. On the other hand it should provide satisfaction to all of its
staff and keep all process related to the service run well. In order to produce the highest
quality of service hospital should also be equipped with suitable medical technology for
supporting the diagnostic and therapeutic process. All the things mentioned above (and
still much more actually) need to manage in good way. Without good management system
hospital will not be able to provide good quality of service, lose in competition because it
will be left by the patient.

Objectives:
To understand how health service institutions (Hospital and Community Health
Center) manage the institution and all process directly or indirectly related to the service
delivery. What aspects should be paid attention while managing the health service
institution (such as: human resource, finance, inventory, drug management, and other
operational management and strategic management), including how the health service
institution adopt the entrepreneurship concept.

Place to be Visited:
Sleman District Hospital (09.30 – 13.00)

Student Assignment:
Make very short (no more than 2 pages A4 double space) individual report based on
the field trip to the Sleman District Hospital. Please choose one topic related to Health
Service Institution Management Systems such as: human resource management, doctor’s
incentive systems, drug management, management information system, etc.

The report should have been collected one week after the field trip
