Johnsy  (Joanna)  Lives  with  sue,  also  an  early  artist  (new  to  the  profession)  
Has  pneumonia.  
 
Doctor  –  Does  not  thing  that  Johnsy  will  live  (1  in  10  chance)  
 
Berhrman  –  60  yrs.  Old,  was  always  thinking  about  painting  a  masterpiece  
but  never  got  to  it.  Drank  often,  becomes  heroic  
 
Events:    
1. Johnsy  is  dying  from  pneumonia.  She  is  losing  the  will  to  live  and  is  
counting  down  the  days  as  each  leaf  falls  from  the  vine.  
2. Sue  tells  Johnsy  she  has  a  10  to  1  chance  to  survive  hoping  Johnsy  will  
want  to  live.  
3. Sue  talks  to  Mr.  Berman  and  tells  him  about  the  leaf  and  Johnsy  losing  
her  will  to  live.  
4. Sue  pulls  down  the  window  shade.  
5. Mr.  Behrman  goes  outside  and  paints  a  leaf  on  the  building’s  wall.  
6. Mr.  Behrman  gets  pneumonia  and  dies  (IRONY)  
7. Johnsy  sees  the  leaf  and  decides  she  will  eat  some  broth;  even  talks  
about  painting  again.  
 
What  is  a  masterpiece?  
 
A  masterpiece  is  an  artist’s  finest  work,  and  it  tends  to  be  worth  a  lot  of  
money.  Mr.  Behrman’s  masterpiece  was  drawing  a  last  leaf  onto  the  vine  
because  he  wants  Johnsy  to  live  although  she  has  convinced  herself  that  when  
the  last  leaf  falls  she  will  die
