3 New features

3.1 Remote network management with cnMaestro

System Release 700-02-67 incorporates the device agent function for cnMaestro. The cnMaestro
Wireless Network Management System is Cambium’s cloud-based or on-premises software platform
for secure, end-to-end network control.

The device agent implementation in PTP 700 provides Fault Management and Performance
Management. Support for additional functional areas may be introduced in later releases.

The device agent shares a common IP interface with the remaining management protocols (HTTP,
HTTPS, SNMP, SMTP, syslog, RADIUS).

PTP 700 makes an outgoing connection to the cnMaestro server using the WebSocket Secure
protocol. The connection between the PTP 700 and the cnMaestro server is encrypted using AES.

The cnMaestro server address is configured in the PTP 700 as follows:

• Cloud cnMaestro Server: Pre-configured Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)

• On-Premises cnMaestro Server: Static IPv4 address or FQDN

PTP 700 supports the following Onboarding Methods:

• Cloud cnMaestro Server: Serial Number, Cambium ID

• On-Premises cnMaestro Server: MAC Address, Cambium ID, Auto

The cnMaestro device agent operates in ODUs configured as PTP Master, PTP Slave, HCMP Master
and HCMP Slave. Master devices do not act as proxy agents for the associated Slave devices. All
ODUs must be configured for connection to the cnMaestro server.

Note The cnMaestro Device Agent is automatically disabled when the PTP 700 ODU is
operating in the FIPS 140-2 Approved Mode.

4 Upgrade process

PTP topology
To upgrade a PTP link to 700-02-67, upload the new firmware to the ODUs at the two ends of the
link, program the firmware image into non-volatile memory in the two ODUs, and then reboot both
ODUs together.

HCMP topology
To upgrade an HCMP sector from 700-02-65 to 700-02-67 use the following process:

(a) Upload firmware from 700-02-67 into the Master ODU, program the firmware image into non-
volatile memory, and then reboot the Master ODU.
At this stage, the Master ODU will be using 700-02-67 and the Slave ODUs will be using 700-
02-65.

(b) Upload firmware from 700-02-67 into one of the Slave ODUs, program the firmware image
into non-volatile memory, and then reboot this ODU.
At this stage, the Slave ODUs will be a mixed population with 700-02-65 and 700-02-67.

(c) Repeat Step (b) for the remaining Slave ODUs.

At this stage all the (Master and Slave) ODUs in the sector will be operating with 700-02-67.

Do not install new Slave ODUs, or make further configuration changes, until all the Slave ODUs have
been upgraded.

Upgrade new Slave ODUs with earlier firmware to 700-02-65 before installing on the upgraded
Master ODU.

5 Problems and limitations corrected

SNMP trap resolved address is wrong when DNS server is disabled

In 700-02-65, if the SNMP trap Internet address is configured as a FQDN, and the DNS server is
subsequently disabled, the ODU displays SNMP Trap Resolved Internet Address equal to “A system
error occurred”. This is not consistent with the equivalent error message for other addresses. In 700-
02-67, the error is more helpfully, and more consistently, set to “DNS server is disabled”.

6 Known problems or limitations

6.1 Introduction of Ethernet switching in PTP topology

TDM service not supported
The TDM (E1/T1) service supported using the Network Indoor Unit (NIDU) in earlier releases is not
supported in PTP 700-02-65. For networks that require TDM circuits, use System Release PTP 700-
02-50.

Second Data Service not supported

In earlier releases, the ODU supported a parallel second data service in the PTP topology. This could
be used to segregate two data services or to provide a limited ability to deliver data to the mid-point
in a wireless relay configuration.

In PTP 700-02-65, the ODU provides a more flexible Ethernet switching feature and the Second Data
Service is no longer supported.

Note that some redesign may be needed in an end-to-end data network to allow upgrade if the
Second Data Service is in use with an earlier release of PTP 700.

6.2 Wireless, HCMP topology
Spectrum Expert indicates impulsive interference when the link is
initializing
In HCMP topology, when the link is initializing, phantom high level interference peaks are displayed in
the Spectrum Expert. These disappear once the link has completed initialization.

Wireless link does not recover when timing error is introduced in 1 PPS
reference
In HCMP topology, when a large timing error is introduced in the 1 PPS reference signal for TDD
Synchronization, the link drops and does not recover, even when the timing error is removed.

6.3 Wireless, PTP topology

Not Synchronizing with 3460 µs Frame duration and no GPS deployed
A Master ODU does not provide synchronization in the situation where all of the following are true:
(a) frame duration is configured for 3460 μs and (b) no GPS is deployed and (c) timing for the site
derived from the Cluster Master ODU.

6.4 Network Management

ODU does not adjust MTU based on receiving Packet Too Big message
The PTP 700 ODU does not adjust its MTU in use for the management agent upon receiving an
ICMPv6 packet too big message.

ODU does not respond to MLD queries

The unit does not process IPv6 Multicast Listener Discovery version 1 (MLDv1) general listener query
messages reliably.

6.5 Network synchronization, PTP topology

Phase error caused by disconnecting and reconnecting SyncE slave port
There is sometimes a large phase transient at PTP 700 Sync E outputs if the ODU makes a transition
from tracking to holdover triggered by physical disconnection of the incoming Sync E reference. This
large phase transient does not occur if the transition to holdover is triggered by a change in the QL
of the received reference.

Wander transfer function fails EEC Option 1 and Option 2 in G.8262

The peak gain of the wander transfer function within the passband of the tracking loop is 0.7 dB
compared with the 0.2 dB requirement in ITU-T recommendation G.8262.

The bandwidth of the tracking loop in PTP 700 is somewhat greater than the 0.1 Hz requirement for
EEC Option 2 networks, and consequently PTP 700 does not comply with the wander transfer limits
in Table 13 of G.8262. This is not likely to be a problem in typical applications of PTP 700, where the
number of Synchronous Ethernet nodes is small.
