Abstract
Home automation is the process of converting manual tasks into automated tasks. It includes wide
range of activities ranging from some basic activities like controlling electrical appliances to
performing complex tasks like providing security and taking decisions based on Artificial
Intelligence.

The main purpose of developing this system is to provide ease and comfort to the user. It will provide
users peace of mind that their home is secure and they will be notified in case of any suspicious
activity.

We will develop a system that will be able to control electrical appliances and provide real time
monitoring of home. There will be a smart lock at the main entrance of the home which will be opened
though mobile phone. The system will send notification alerts to the user in case of any suspicious
activity like someone tried to broke into the house.

1. Introduction
This document is about the home automation system. By home automation we mean converting
manual tasks into automated and less tiring tasks. In the modern world of technology, it seems
inappropriate to control all devices by manual switch. The main purpose of this project is to bring
ease and comfort and to minimize time and effort.

In home automation different devices are controlled by a controller device and several tasks are
automated. We can control home appliances with our smart phone. Home automation is a very broad
term and can include a variety of tasks ranging from simpler tasks like switching on appliances to
difficult tasks like providing security.

2. Problem Statement
To control home appliances with different switches is hectic and not a desirable task. We naturally as
human beings try to find ease in every task. Every appliance has separate switch and you need to get
up and go to the switch to turn it on or off. This problem become worse for older and disabled persons.
More over security of the home is also a big issue. You cannot detect that someone broke into your
house especially when you are not in home.

There are systems already developed for home automation, but every system has some limitations.
We will develop a system which will overcome these limitations. Modern and secure technologies
will be used in development of this system. During the development of this system we will learn
different skills like programming of micro controllers, communication between devices, android and
web development.

3. Problem Solution for Proposed System

We will develop a system to control the home appliances through smart phone. Now a days everyone
has smart phone in his pocket. Instead of controlling the device through manual switches you can turn
it on or off through smart phone. Further these tasks can also be automated like the appliances will
automatically turn on based on data collected from sensors (temperature sensor, light sensor etc.).
The system will also provide the facility to set timers for different appliances.

For security purpose we will provide real time monitoring and smart lock. You can view your home
from anywhere in the world and unlock your door through your smart phone. Further the system will
also send notifications when door is unlocked and in case of any suspicious activity.

5. Advantages/Benefits of Proposed System

i. Enhance comfort. You can control your appliances through smart phone.
ii. Will enhance the security. You can monitor your house from anywhere at any time.
iii. Peace of mind. You will get notification alerts for any suspicious activity.
iv. Save Energy. The appliances will automatically turn off.
v. Secure lock. The lock will operate through smart phone.

6. Scope
Our system’s user will be able to access all the home appliances on his/her smart phone. There will
be an administrator of the system who will add other members of home. The members will login to
their account. Upon successful login the user can perform all the functionalities available in the
system. If user want to on/off the home appliance user can do it with smartphone. A user can also set
the automated tasks like switching on light based on light intensity or at certain time. The user will
unlock the door through his/her smartphone. The user can view the real time monitoring of the home
from anywhere any time and get the notification alerts in case of any suspicious activity like if
someone broke into the home, fire and gas leakage.

7. Modules
7.1 Module 1: Profile Management
This module will cover the functions related to adding new users into the system and authenticating
them upon login. There will be an admin of the system and only he/she can add new users. The new
user will be provided with unique user name and password which will be used to authenticate him.

7.2 Module 2: Manual Control

The user can control the devices connected to the system through his smart phone. User can switch
on or off a device by using the application. He/she can set timers to switch on a device for a particular
time.

7.3 Module 3: Schedule Automation

The user can also automate several tasks like turning on a cooling device based on temperature.
Switching on lights based on light intensity or at particular timing. Switching off the lights when no
one is present in the room.

7.4 Module 4: Surveillance and Security

The user can view the real time video of his house at anytime from anywhere. The video will be saved
for a period of 30 days. There will also be an option of smart recording. In smart recording cameras
will only record when they sense any motion.

7.5 Module 6: Notifications and Alerts

The user will get notification alerts like when the door is unlocked and other alarming activities like
fire and gas leakage. The user will also get notification alert whenever a new user is added into the
system. The user will have the option to disable certain alerts.

8. System Limitations/Constraints
 User must be connected to the internet to use the system.
 Only admin can add new members.
 Backing mechanism needs to be in place.

9. Software Process Methodology

We will follow Incremental model because it works in iterative way and during each iteration it is
easy to debug and test. By using this methodology, the failure risk factor of final product decreases
because testing is performed in each iteration. It works in increments which is easy way to develop a
software Changes can be easily done during the software development process.

13. Data Gathering Approach

The information and requirements gathering approach we used for our project is interview. We
interviewed different people about the home automation. We asked users about the features they want
in their home. We also interviewed some experts and asked question about the proposed system its
working and tools and technologies used in development of this system. Help from internet has also
been taken to further enhance our concept and idea.
