Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The activity I have planned for the students supports all students because it incorporates a lot of options for
students with different learning styles. I allow them to choose who they would like to do the assignment on,
how they would like to obtain the information for their project, and what kind of media they will use for their
project. I also provided a lot of different methods for the delivery of the information about abolition and
suffrage as far as using watching videos, doing an online scavenger hunt, allowing students to research online
and use books. All of these methods and materials from the lesson allow for a UDL classroom by providing
multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression.

Lesson idea implementation:
We will start learning about the subject of abolitionists and suffrage by first watching videos about the
movement. I will then have the students complete an online scavenger hunt related to the topic while I stand
by and answer any questions they might have. After the students are fluent on the suffrage and abolitionist
movement, I will ask them to complete a project on one of the famous abolitionists from the time. I will

provide books on Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Harriett
Tubman for the students to read and do research with. They will also have the ability to do online research for
the abolitionist they chose for the assignment.

I will ask the students to go to Bubble.us and create a bubble map on their chosen person so that they can
organize their gathered information for their final project. The students will then be given options for the
assignment they would like to complete about their person. They can create a power point, create a weebly,
create a comic strip online or on paper, write a paper, or create a poster. I will grade each project with a
rubric and give the students a score out of 50 points. We will conclude the lesson after a couple of days by
presenting the projects to the class.
Reflective Practice:
After reviewing the lesson that I designed, I believe the activities I created could impact student learning in a
positive way. I created a very student centered lesson by giving the students a lot of choice throughout the
lesson to pick and choose the route they wanted to take to supplement their learning. I created this idea to
take place during as we learn about abolition and suffrage. This lesson can be extended throughout the year
because we can refer back to these famous figures as we continue to learn about slavery, the civil war, civil
rights, and women’s rights and the effect that these famous figures had on changing the United States. I could
possibly add more technology by giving the students some more productivity tools to use to organize their
information and present their project.
