HVAC PUMPS AND PRESSURIZATION UNITS

1.04 SUBMITTALS

A. Comply with Section 01300.

B. Drawings: Refer Section to 15010.

C. Calculations: Pump Head calculations shall be submitted for approval based on the
Contractor's working drawings and pipeline equipment to be installed, using the calculation
method and data from ASHRAE Handbook - Fundamentals.

D. Products: Full certified manufacturer’s performance data and construction details.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturers: Firms regularly engaged in the manufacture of pumps and pressurization


units whose products have been in satisfactory use for a similar application for not less than
10 years.

B. Installer: Firms regularly engaged and qualified in the installation of pumps and
pressurization units with at least 5 years successful installation experience on projects of a
similar nature.

C. Obtain applicable test certificates for equipment in this section to demonstrate adequate works
testing for quality, performance and compliance with relevant codes.

1.06 OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE DATA

A. Comply with Sections 01730 and 15010.

1.07 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. 1 year’s supply of packing materials and lubricants.

B. 1 set of mechanical seals for each pump type/size.

1.08 WARRANTY

A. Comply with Section 01740.

B. Warranty shall cover 1 year complete parts and labor from the date of completion of the
cooling performance test on site.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS

A. Primary chiller pumps shall be piping-mounted split coupled vertical in-line constant speed
centrifugal types located as shown on the Drawings and described in the schedules.

B. Secondary chilled water circulating pumps shall be piping-mounted split coupled vertical in-
line centrifugal type with individual variable frequency inverter drives of matched rating.

C. All pump motors shall be three phase totally enclosed fan cooled to NEMA MG 1, Design B,
energy efficient squirrel cage type with Class F winding insulation. Section 15171 also
applies.

D. Pumps and motors shall be rated to operate continuously with a maximum ambient air
temperature of 50 ºC.

E. Centrifugal pumps shall have stainless steel drive shafts with bronze impellers. Impeller
casings shall be cast iron ductile iron and provided with pressure tappings on suction and
discharge.

F. The pump casing design shall be such that the impeller can be withdrawn without dismantling
pipework connections or disturbing the baseplate.

G. Vertical in-line pumps shall be fitted with mechanical seals which are replaceable without
removal of the pump casing or the motor.

Other pumps shall be fitted with mechanical seals which are replaceable without stripping
down the bearing system.

H. All components used in the construction of pumps shall be selected in accordance with system
working and test pressures.

I. Pipework connections shall be flanged to ASME B 31.9 and ASTM A 234.

Flexible connections shall be provided for pump types other than vertical in-line.

2.02 VERTICAL IN-LINE PUMP (SPLIT COUPLED)

A. Vertical In-Line pumps shall be single stage, single or double suction type, rigid spacer type
coupling, with pump characteristics which provide rising heads to shut off. Refer to pump
schedule for pump flows, heads, motor speed, enclosure and power requirements.4300 split
coupled type.

B. Pump Construction Pump Casing -Cast Iron for working pressure below 12.05 bar at 65 °C
(PN16 flange rating) and Ductile Iron for working pressures to 25 bar at 65 °C (PN25 flange
rating). Suction and discharge connection shall be flanged and the same size and shall be
drilled and tapped for seal flush and gauge connection.

C. Impeller -Bronze, fully enclosed type. Dynamically balanced.

D. Shaft -Provide Stainless Steel pump shaft.

E. Coupling -Rigid spacer type of high tensile aluminum alloy. Couplings shall be split to allow
removal from pump and motor shafts, leaving space between the shafts sufficient to replace
all mechanical seal components without disturbing the pump or motor.

F. Mechanical Seals -Shall be Stainless Steel outside multi-spring balanced type with Viton
secondary seal. Provide 316 stainless steel gland plate with Stainless Steel trim. Provide
factory installed flush line with manual vent.

G. All split coupled pumps shall be provided with a lower seal chamber throttle bushing.

H. Seal flush line fittings: Supply in the flush line to the mechanical seal a 50 micron cartridge
filter and sight flow indicator, to suit the working pressure encountered.

I. Filters shall be changed, by the installing contractor, after system is flushed and on a regular
basis until turned over to the owner.

J. Alternately, for pumps with differential pressures exceeding 200 kPa (3.6 psi):Supply in the
flush line to the mechanical seal a cyclone type separator, with sight flow indicator.

2.03 SUCTION GUIDE

A. Furnish and install on the suction of each pump, a suction guide with cast iron body, outlet
guide vanes, removable stainless steel strainer and fine mesh start-up strainer.

B. The contractor shall inspect the strainer prior to start-up of pump and shall remove the fine
mesh brass strainer after a short running period. Space shall be provided for removal of
strainer and connection of blow down valve.

2.04 FLOTREX

A. Furnish and install on the discharge side of each pump Model FTV Flo-Trex Combination
valve incorporating three functions in one body: tight shut-off, spring-closure type silent non-
slam check and flow measurement/throttling.

B. Valve body shall be ductile iron with grooved ends and anti-rotation ArmgripTM lugs on the
inlet and outlet of the body. The body shall have two 7mm NPT connections on each side of
the valve seat. Two connections to have brass pressure and temperature metering ports, with
Nordel check valves and gasketted caps. Two other connection to be supplied with brass drain
plugs. Metering ports are to be interchangeable with drain ports to allow for measurement
flexibility when installed in tight locations.

C. The valve disc shall be bronze plug disc type with high impact engineered resin seat to ensure
tight shut-off and silent check valve operation.

D. The valve stem shall be stainless steel with flat surfaces provided for adjustment with open
and wrench.

E. Flange adapters, where necessary, are to be ArmgripTM 125/150 psi or 250/300 psi ductile
iron flanges with anti-rotation lugs and EPT gaskets.

F. The valve shall be selected and installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
and be suitable for the pressure and temperature encountered.

G. Insulation (65-150 mm)

Each valve shall be furnished with a pre-formed removable PVC insulation jacket to meet
ASTMD 1784/class 14253-C, MEA # 7-87, ASTM-E-84 and ASTM-136 with a flame spread
rating of 25 or less and a smoke development rating of 50 or less. There will be provided
sufficient mineral fiberglass insulation to meet ASHRAE 90.1-1989 specifications in
operating conditions with maximum Fluid Design Operating Temperature Range or 141-
2000F and Mean Rating Temperature of 1250F.

2.05 CHILLED WATER PRESSURIZATION UNITS - PACKAGED

A. Each packaged unit shall comprise:-

1. Duty pump(s) and one standby pump

2. Membrane expansion vessel(s)

3. Break tank with Warning and Danger level switches

4. Piping connections:

Domestic water supply


Break tank overflow
System pipework

5. Test/off/auto switch.

6. Pump controls:

High and low system pressure switches for normal operation (auto reset)
High and low system pressure switches for alarm and unit shutdown (manual
reset)
Auto changeover on total starts and pump trip.

7. Indicator and warning lamps, with corresponding dry contacts for connection to the
BMS/HVAC control system:

Power On
Pump Running
Pump Trip
High & Low System Pressure
Duty Pump failed

8. Mounting skid

B. Each pressurization unit shall be self-contained ready for system connections.

C. Pressure vessel(s) shall be mounted within the unit casing.

D. Manufacturer’s vessel selections shall ensure that, if one vessel is taken out of action, the final
working pressure shall not exceed 1.2 times the design working pressure at the suction
connection to the circulating pumps.

E. Pressurization unit pumps shall be close coupled centrifugal type with mechanical seals, cast
iron casings and bronze gunmetal impellers.

F. The on-board control panel shall be BMS-compatible and shall be contained within a painted
galvanized steel cabinet with IP65 protection rating also accommodating the pump starters
and control and indication equipment.

G. Pressure switches shall be fitted to provide automatic control and changeover of the pumps.
High and low limit pressure switches with hand reset shall be provided to cut out the unit and
give indication on the panel. The pressurisation unit panel shall be provided with volt-free
contacts to allow remote indication of pump failure and high and low pressure alarm.

H. The break tank shall be fitted with high and low limit float switches and volt-free contacts
shall be provided for remote indication.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION AND TESTING

A. Pumps, pressurization units systems and associated equipment and components shall be
inspected and tested in accordance with Section 15996.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Support piping adjacent to pump so that only self weight is carried on pump casings. Install
supports under elbows on pump suction and discharge lines.

B. Anti-vibration measures shall be as described in Section 15513.

C. Provide line sized shut-off valve and strainer/diffuser (suction guide) on pump suction, and
line size check valve (Flotrex), balancing valve and isolation valve on pump discharge.

D. Provide air cock and drain connection on pump casings.

E. Lubricate pumps before start-up.
