LESSON PLAN

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON ORGANISATION

Year Level: Pre Primary Time: 1:45-2:45pm Students’ Prior Knowledge:

Date: Wednesday 29th May, Week 5

- Students have already had many other
science lessons and experiments
Learning Area: Science
previously, practicing how to predict and
record what will happen and record
Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum
results.
Science involves observing, asking questions about,
and describing changes in, objects and
events (ACSHE013)

General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

Literacy Numeracy ICT Critical and Ethical Personal Intercultural
competence creative behaviour and Social understandi
thinking competence ng
Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Asia and Australia’s Sustainability
Islander histories and cultures engagement with Asia
Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
 Record their investigation, prediction and results of the experiment.
 Participate appropriately within their investigation of creating a lava lamp.
Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:
- Gather 4 large jars, vegetable oil, colour some - For Dilphreet I will either be with her or
water different colours and place them in small place Mrs Palmer with her when physically
container, break up some alka saltzer and doing the experiment to make sure she is
place them on plates. cooperating appropriately as well as
- Print enough investigation reflections for all making sure she makes an effort to predict
students to fill out throughout the experiment what will happen.
along with pencils/crayons etc.
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

1

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

- Were all the students participating appropriately?
- Did the students complete their investigation reflection?
- Were the students engaged?
- Did the students enjoy the experiment?

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

- Were the students controlled?
- Did the students take the directions?
- Did I explain the investigation correctly?
- Could the students understand what the experiment was?

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

be introduced.
2. Show the students materials we will be combining and
explain that we will be doing a science experiment, ask if the
students have a guess of what will happen when you add all
three materials together.

3. Have a class discussion.

4. Then send off the students (by calling group by group) to the
table to record and draw the first two boxes in their record
sheets which will be; what we are investigating and their

crayons etc.

1:55pm Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key

Questions):

1. Walk around while the students are filling out their first two
boxes in their record sheets to make sure they know what

2

they are doing and pointing to which box they are putting in
the questions.
2. Once all the students have completed the first two boxes of
the record sheet, explain that we will be doing the experiment
in two big groups.
3. Split up the class and send the Horses and Lions to go onto
the mat to have free time (already pre set out) and then have
the Hippos and Lizards to do the experiment first.
4. Then explain the instructions –
To begin, fill a glass about 3/4 full with vegetable oil, then pour in the
coloured water. Once the students have talked about what they can 4 large jars, vegetable
see, explain that oil and water do not mix and that’s why there are oil, coloured water and
little bubbles and it is sitting on the bottom of the jar. Then let the broken pieces of alka
children take turns adding a piece of an Alka Seltzer table to the cup. saltzer.
*DO NOT let them put the tablet in their mouth. Have a class
discussion about what is happening, and if they have ever seen a
Lava Lamp before and compare similarities and differences.
5. Once the students have had a go dropping a piece of the
Alka Seltzer in the jar, give back their record sheets to then
get the students to draw their observations of what they can
see (leaving the jar in the middle of their table)
6. Once all the students have finished their observations, put
2:15pm
aside their jars and then swap the groups, sending the
Hippos and Lizards onto the mat for free time and bringing
the Horses and Lions to the experiment tables.
7. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
8. Once all the students have completed, get the students to
pack away their work and come back onto the mat.
2:35pm
Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

1. Once the students are back on the mat, have a class

discussion about how they thought of the experiment,

3

discuss about what they saw and if there predictions

matched the results.
2. Then explain the science behind it and explain why that
result of the experiment happened –
The water and oil do not mix and the oil doesn’t change colour
because the food colouring is water soluble. The Alka Seltzer reacts
with the water to make bubbles of carbon dioxide. The bubbles
attach themselves to the blobs of coloured water and bring them to
the top of the glass. When the bubbles pop the blobs of coloured
water fall back to the bottom of the glass.
2:45pm

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

1. Thank the students for participating so well and ask again if

they enjoyed the experiment.
2. Once the lesson is finished, give the students back to Mrs
Papas to close the day.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be

judged?)

- This lesson is part of Mrs Papas assessment for reporting,

the record sheets will be collected and used to grade each
student using the prepared rubric on four different areas each
weighing 5 marks each. I will have a go grading some
students work with Mrs Papas, however for reporting Mrs
Papas will take home the assessment to grade each student
on how they went throughout their science experiment.
- I will also be making sure that the students have achieved
the lesson objectives as well as assessing myself if I
scaffolded the students learning well enough to achieve
those lesson plans.
