Improper Segregation

Chapter 1: Problem and its background

Introduction

Nowadays, we are suffering environmental dilemmas such as global warming, flash floods and etc.
One of the causes of these problems is the misbehavior of the people towards waste management; some
people are reckless in throwing their garbage, they do not even think about the consequences of their actions
and what it may lead to.

Lately, the researchers observed that in Castor Alviar National High School there is an improper
segregation happening at its different premises, some students doesn’t pay attention when throwing their
garbage on trash bins, that often leads to improper segregation or disposal.

For as we all know that there are three types of waste, they are classified as biodegradable, non-
biodegradable, and recyclable. Though teachers pay attention and apply efforts in labeling their trash bins or
trash cans, but the problem is no matter how many signs or advice a teacher gives, students still has a the
capability to throw their garbage on their undesignated area.

Waste Management is the collection, transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of
waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and the process is generally
undertaken to reduce their effect on the environment, life and also health. It is a distinct practice from resource
recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of consumption of natural resources.

Background of the Study

The history of proper waste disposal and differentiating its class and variety had been widely spread
through ages and generation, passed on by our ancestors. Even though it has been taught to us at schools
and even at our homes, but there are still some people that continuously disobey the orders, rules and
regulations in the proper waste management,

A student may also affect the proper segregation through the means of putting a biodegradable waste
(for example banana peelings) into a trash bin wherein non biodegradable are disposed or vice versa.

Statement of the Problem

Proper segregation of waste helps the environment to be healthy, no junk or plastic floating or staying
nearby. In this study, the improper segregation of waste is what the researchers are dealing with.
A. What are the factors that affect proper segregation?
- Overflowing trash bins
- None overflowing trash bins
- Mixed up
B. What may be the reason why students don’t perform proper segregation?
- Insufficient supply of trash bags.
- Advisers that prohibit students to use different types of trash bins. ( especially the biodegradable
and non biodegradable trash bins, that recently ends up with mixed up wastes)
- Some students that don’t like to use trash bins or trash bags and throw their trash properly based
upon their designated places.

Hypothesis

Different factors such as overflowing, none overflowing trash bins, mixed up wastes,
insufficient supply of trash bags, advisers that prohibit students to use different types of trash bins, and
students that don’t like to use trash bins and garbage bags to avoid wasting too much time can affect
the accuracy and the certainty of having a properly segregated trash bin or trash bag.

Objectives of the Study

General Objectives

- To help Castor Alviar NHS to properly segregate their wastes and to identify the factors that affects
its certainty.

Specific Objectives

- To identify or to specify the factors that affects the proper segregation of wastes
- To establish a proper way of segregating garbage.

Scope and Limitations

This research study was conducted in Castor Alviar NHS at Brgy. Masili Calamba City, Laguna. The
study focuses on how to identify the factors that affect the improper segregation of waste materials in all the
Grade 8 sections.

Significance of the Study

The School

- The school of Castor Alviar NHS will be benefited by the research study, wherein it will help it
to have the ability to segregate its wastes properly.

- The school would be known for its cleanliness because of non overflowing trash bins

The Students

- The study will benefit the students of CANHS, because if they were able to segregate
properly, they would not be disturbed by the stench of the garbage fusing biodegradable and
non biodegradable.

The Researchers

- Future researchers will be benefited, because they can use it as a review of related literature
or study.

Definition of Terms

Waste - a material that is no longer needed.

Segregation - the act or process of segregating; set apart or separated from others of the same kind or group.

Premises - a house or building, together with its land and outbuildings, occupied by business or considered in
an official context.

Dilemmas – problems, difficulties about something

Establish – set up, start or create

Certainty – sureness, accurate

Consumption – ingesting or using up things such as food, supplies, natural resources and etc.

Foreign

Nowadays, we are suffering environmental dilemmas such as global warming, flash floods, and etc.
One of the causes of this problem is the misbehavior of the people towards waste management. Some people
are reckless in throwing their garbage. They do not think of the possible results of their actions on the
environmental as well as on health.

Waste disposal can be defined as any method used to discard unwanted substances or materials. Poor
waste disposal activities engender severe environmental problems on a location.

Improper waste disposal is the disposal of waste in a way that has negative consequences for the
environment. Examples include littering, hazardous waste that is dumped into the ground , and not recycling
items that should be recycled .

Causes

1.Ignorance : Ignorance of people about proper waste disposal. People are unaware of consequences of their
unwise acts .

2.Laziness : Can cause improper garbage disposal because people not following the correct rules of proper
waste disposal their always throw it what place they want and they have no care what will be the effect of it.

3.Greed : Can cause improper garbage disposal for example burning tires of wheel and plastic instead or
keeping it or trade the excess automobile car’s tires to maximize on it.

Effects

Affects our Health

Like lung disease, heart problem, skin irritation, problem or abnormality in breathing and more.

Affects our Climate

As some waste decomposes, it releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Like trapping of here on earth
that may affect of abnormality of weather condition like more storm or typhoon coming per year is happening
until now.

Air Pollution

The open burning of waste causes air pollution or greenhouse affects. For example burning of rubber and
plastic.

Soil Contamination

Is caused by the presence of manmade chemicals, the softness of the ground, having smelly soil vapor and
other alteration in the natural soil environment.

Infections to humans

Skin irritation and blood infections resulting from direct contact with waste, and transmitting bacteria from
waste to infected wounds.

How can we solve this ?

Decomposed

Decomposed your waste is an option for getting rid of your households waste. You can compost
used items: food wasted, animal waste, yard waste, and much more.

Recycling

Recycling waste is another option for getting rid of waste. There are many different things that are recyclable :
paper, tin, aluminum, plastic, and much more.

Buy products that are good for the environment.

Instead of purchasing those plastic pop bottles, find a way that you can buy things that are more
environmentally friendly some of this include bottle openers, calendars, coloring books, and much more.

It is very sad to know that many lives have been sacrificed because of these calamities that have
come. Many places in the Philippines are down to flood every time when typhoon comes and worst, a large
number of families have lost their shelters and have nothing left for them. Their wealth was ruined by storms,
floods, etc. We are experiencing very hot weather because of greenhouse effect and global warming. Many
kinds of disease occur because of untidy surroundings. Others can no longer smell the breath of fresh air. All
of this is the effects of improper waste management.

So what are you waiting for, stop improper disposal. And we do the Reduce, Reused, Recycle for the
betterment of our country.

Local

A case study about the Improper Waste Disposal in Barangay Mojon Tampoy, Philippines.

Abstract

One of the common problems in the Barangay Mojon Tampoy is the improper waste disposal, which
could affect the current living of the residents of the barangay. The type of research approach is a qualitative
research. In the study the researchers aim to create a solution fir the main problem that the researchers found
out by interviewing the residents. The theory on Waste Management (2004) by E. Pongrácz, P.S. Phillips, and
R.L. Keiski is used as a reference through the progression of the study. And interview was conducted with (9)
willingly residents of the chosen community, barangay Mojon Tampoy. The question asked to the respondents
was their basic information, source of income and the problems that they encountered in the community.

THz general objective of our study is to teach the residents of Brgy. Mojon-Tampoy on how to properly
dispose their garbage, to find alternative ways in eliminating their garbage and to ensure that the community
will maintain the cleanliness in Brgy. Mojon,Tampoy. This study mainly focuses on how the practices of the
people in the community can deeply affect, not just our nature but also their health. With our proposed project,
which is the compost pit with shredder, this will help reduce the carbon footprints and smoke pollution present
in the barangays. This is to guarantee that the community will bring and end to incinerating their garbage

Chapter 3: Methodology

This chapter includes and contains the sources of data, the research location, research design,
research instruments, and sampling procedure; in short this chapter deals with all procedures and methods
taken to complete the study.

Research Design

The study used descriptive research design observations was executed for us to fully obtain the data
that we need using the descriptive method.

Source of Data

The primary source of our data are the Grade 8 section’s trash bins, the researchers would start
observing and gathering data on February 18, 2019 to February 22, 2019, mainly the researchers need the
garbage of each grade 8 sections, in order for the researchers to compare the data that they have gathered.

The secondary source of our data came from the researchers observation based upon the behavior
of the students and teachers when the researchers asked them, “Can we please have your garbage”? , “Do
you have two different trash bins”? And etc.

Research Locale/ Location

The research was conducted in Castor Alviar NHS at Brgy. Masili, Calamba, Laguna.

Sampling Technique and Procedure

The sampling method that the researchers used is convenience sampling, mainly the 8 grade 8
sections has been the researchers source of data.

Research Instruments

Gloves, Garbage Bag, Weighing Scale and Gas Mask

Gloves

- The protective material used by the researchers in order to protect their hands from dirt and
unwanted substances from the trash bins.

Garbage Bag

- The containers wherein the researchers store the waste that they have gathered, they were even
able to separate and segregate the garbage that was not properly segregated, making it easier for them to
understand and obtain the data that they need.

Weighing Scale

- The instrument used by the researchers in order to measure or weigh the wastes that were stored
inside the garbage bag, to help them create and compare the data of each grade 8 sections.

Gas Mask/Mask

- The material used by the researchers to protect their nose and lungs from the stench that comes
from the trash bin, wherein they segregate the garbage to gather data.

Based upon the figure above, Genesis is the best in segregation among any other sections except
Ruth. The day Thursday (1,630 grams) has the highest weight of trash among the other days; having 1,180
grams of biodegradable and 450 grams of non biodegradable waste, this indicates that the students of this
section has a higher possibility to produce surprisingly large amount of garbage at the day Thursday than any
other days of the week.

What can we observe in the table above that, the section Genesis had 4 non overflowing trash bins
and one overflowing non biodegradable. And because it is a 5 day collection and gathering of data and it only
means that there should be exactly 5 streaks inside the table above.

Overflowing trash bins – one of the factors that affect the proper segregation, because if there are overflowing
biodegradable or non overflowing biodegradable, If I am a student that would throw my banana peelings to an
overflowing biodegradable trash bin, my mind would tell me “just throw it at the non biodegradable trash bin
after all the biodegradable is all ready full” or “no one is looking, I should just throw this to the non
biodegradable”.

Non Overflowing – Judging the situation above, you could freely observed that, if there is an overflowing trash
bin, there would also be a non overflowing trash bin, where in the same situation happens again, but if you are
carrying a banana peeling then you are about to throw it to a biodegradable trash bin, you suddenly noticed
that it is already full, and because you saw a non overflowing trash that is for non biodegradable, you decided
to dispose it on the non biodegradable trash bin, instead of a biodegradable trash bin, and that’s how it affect
the proper segregation.

Mixed Up – having only one garbage bag to dispose unto, is really unbelievably hard to segregate, because
there are also some factors why students doesn’t perform proper segregation because of;

fascinating type of segregation, there were no problems about their disposal and segregation.

The table above implies us that, the last 3 days of a week namely Wednesday (820 grams), Thursday
(770 grams) and Friday (500 grams) had lesser weight than Monday (1,270 grams) and Tuesday (3,180
grams). What the researchers observed is that Tuesday than any other day had the highest weight, weighing
about 3,180 grams.

What can we observe in the table above that, the section Exodus had 3 non overflowing trash bins 2

that is when they end the day by story their garbage inside a trash bag, they mixed up the bio and non bio.

What can the researchers derived about the data above; the day Tuesday has the heaviest garbage
weighing about 1,730 grams, among the 4 other days of the week. The segregation of Proverbs wasn’t perfect
although they have these two days namely Wednesday and Thursday wherein they were able to segregate
properly.

The data above tells us that, Ruth one of the sections of Grade 8 sections has also one of the best
segregation among the Grade 8 Sections. Because as you can see, starting from Monday to Friday they were
able to segregate properly, what peculiar about Ruth is, at the last day of collection/ gathering of data, what
they only have was a 230 gram of placed non biodegradable.

What can observe in the table above that, the section Ruth had 4 non overflowing trash bins and one
mixed up waste. And because it is a 5 day collection and gathering of data and it only means that there should
be exactly 5 streaks inside the table above.

Ruth has no problem about their rights on proper segregation and they are not prohibited to use their
garbage bags and trash bins, but the problem is that they don’t have enough supply of garbage bag, wherein
we used to store waste materials.

What can we derive from the data above is, this section is one of the worst in segregating Tuesday
has the highest weight of trash weighing about 4.14 kg.

There are days in which they correctly segregated the non biodegradable, but alas they only have
properly segregated their biodegradable (450 grams) and non biodegradable (450 grams) on Friday

What can we observe from the table above is that, the section Job produces too much waste than
any other sections, they produced almost 10.72 kg of garbage for only 5 days. But its main problem is, they
cannot segregate properly.

Just like others sections, the section Job also have the rights to use their trash bins and trash bags,
but mainly the students doesn’t perform proper segregation, even though they have the rights to perform and
execute it, they also have an insufficiency on garbage bags.

The worst sections, in segregation, know for the data above. Misplacing biodegradable for three
days, namely Monday (90 grams), Tuesday (3.4 kg) and Wednesday (320 grams).

Placing 0 biodegradable in their proper or designated places, 3 days of misplaced non biodegradable,

But manage to place non biodegradable in their designated places for 2 days.

Judges, as we have observed in the figure above, judges had 2 non overflowing, 1 for bio and 1 for
non bio, on the other hand it also got 2 overflowing streaks of non bio and 1 mixed up.

The section that almost got the proper segregation, but didn’t because of misplacing both bio and non
bio on Monday. At Tuesday, Samuel wasn’t able to segregate properly in placing biodegradable and non
biodegradable waste on their designated places.

Samuel had no problem about their overflowing trash bins although they got 1 mixed up trash bin, but
Samuel was able to almost properly segregate their garbage but wasn’t successful because of some factors.

Samuel didn’t have any supply of garbage bag, but even though it’s not possible for them to buy or
use these things, it was not the reason for them to incorrectly segregate their garbage.

Just like Samuel the section Kings, had a wonderful status involving segregation just as shown
above, they were able to segregate properly from Monday to Tuesday and Thursday to Friday.

The problem is that they were not able to properly segregate their waste on Wednesday, and what they had
was a mixed up trash. But why?

Like Samuel also, they were the same when going to the category of factors that affect proper
segregation, they had no problem about their overflowing trash bins although they got 1 mixed up trash bin.

Based upon the graph above we could see that there is only 25% of the Grade 8 sections that has
insufficient supply of garbage bag, in numbers 25% is equal to 2 and 75% in numbers is equal to 6, so if there
is 2 yes and 6 no, then the researchers further conclude that the majority of grade sections has the ability to
supply itself with enough garbage bags.

So the insufficiency of garbage bags may or may not affect the proper segregation, because out of 8
sections there were just 2 of them that got affected, and 6 were not.

Moreover, if there would still be an enough amount of garbage bag students may or may not throw
their garbage on the right / wrong trash bins.

Just as shown on the graph above, there is only a small percentage of students being prohibited by
their advisers only about 10% of all grade 8 sections, which means there are 90% of sections are given the
rights and the permissions to segregate and use the proper trash bins, where specific waste or unwanted
materials may be disposed at their designated places.

In addition, the factor in which advisers prohibits the use of different types of trash bins, does not
affect the proper segregation of waste materials at any type of situation, unless not much, because too much of
everything is bad.

Based upon the graph presented at the top, it only refers to the percentage of students that does not
perform or execute proper segregation, only 25% of agreed that sometimes they do not perform proper
segregation and disposal of waste, but the good thing is that there are 75% of all grade 8 sections that properly
dispose/segregate their garbage.

What can the researchers conclude that the third factor can really affect the accuracy and certainty of
proper segregation, because if the improper disposal / segregation of waste becomes a habit or a mannerism it
will not be able to be controlled and at the end, the word segregation would be forgotten.

Chapter 5: Summary of Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

This chapter presents the summary of the research work undertaken, the conclusions drawn and the
recommendations made as an auto growth of this study.

This study on the proper waste disposal and factors that affect proper segregation of the grade 8 students of
Castor Alviar National High School.

Summary of Findings

Property segregating and disposing of your waste not only reduces the amount of toxins that enters the
atmosphere, you may even save some one's life.

The study was conducted in Castor Alviar National High School. The respondents were the grade 8 student.
The study focuses on how to identify factors that affect the improper segregation of waste materials.

In terms of the factors that affect proper segregation, overflowing trash bins are noted. The tendency of the
students upon seeing overflowing trash bins to put their trash on a non overflowing trash bins whether they
knew it was the right bins for their trash. One may display lack of integrity thinking that nobody sees him, and
others are just lazy, though it is sad to say. Mixed up trash, was the result of having only one trash bi meaning
they don't have any choice but to mix it up.

About the reason why students don't perform proper segregation, only 25% of the respondents got affected by
lack of garbage bag on their classroom. And as little as 10% of the respondent are being prohibited by their
advisers to use different types of trash bins that ends up with mixed up wastes. Lastly, 25% of the respondents
are those students who doesn't like to practice proper waste segregation.

Conclusions,

Based on the findings, the researchers conclude that some students are opted to do improper waste
segregation due to overflowing trash bins. Automatically, upon seeing it, even with the knowledge on proper
disposal, they are opted to do it. And there are some students, upon seeing none flowing trash bins, don't care
enough whether they are putting their trash on the right bin or not, especially no one is seeing them. Every
students have their own attitudes. Mixed up garbage is a result of overflowing trash bins and lacking of trash
bags.

Being in a public school, the fact that the school has only a limited budget, lacking of trash bags is a reason for
improper waste segregation. With so much projects school activities, finds for trash bags is sometimes being
set aside but never been neglected. Another reason is that the teacher prohibits to have two trash bins, maybe
because the teacher doesn't want to give another load for the students. And another reason, which is very true
and very observable is that, no matter how many signage you have on waste disposal, there are those who
doesn't want to participate on it.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations were formulated:

● The students should be well-informed about the proper waste segregation, so that there will be no reason for
mixed up garbage.

● There should always be enough trash bags in every room so to avoid overflowing of trash bags.

● The students should at all times practice integrity so that all the policies being implemented will be acted
accordingly.
● The students and the teachers should always go hand in hand so to achieve their goals.
