AKNOWLEDGEMENT

Praise is to Allaah Who by His blessings all good things are

perfected. Whatever blessing has been received by me or anyone
of His creation is from Him only, hence, I admit His blessings
upon me and I am grateful to Him.

I owe an enormous scholarly debt to Sheik Muhammad Saalih

Almunajjid, the author of 33 Sababun Lil-Khushoo’ Fi
Salaah. The book really benefits and inspired me to write this
book. I place on record, my deepest appreciation to Alhaji
Abubakr Amosa Mu’allim’s family; my parent, brothers,
sisters and other members of the family. And my treasured
wife, Abubakr Muneerah, who spent sleepless nights with me
and was always my support in the moments when there was
no one to answer my queries, and my children - I say:
“Jazakumullahu Khayran”.

INTRODUCTION

All Praise be to Allaah, we praise Him, seek His help and His
forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allaah from the evils of our souls
and evils of our deeds. One, whom Allaah guides, none can lead
him astray, and one whom He misguides, none can guide him. I
bear witness that there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah,
and I bear witness that Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of
Allaah be upon him) is His servant and His messenger.

“Oh, you who believe! Fear Allaah as He should be feared, and

do not die except as Muslim”. (Q3:102). “O mankind! Fear your
Lord who created you from singled person (Adam), and from him
(Adam) He created his wife (Hawah), and from them both He
created many men and women and fear Allaah through whom you
demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the
wombs (kinship). Surely, Allaah is Ever an All-Watcher over
you.” (Q4:1). “O those who believe! Fear Allaah and say what is
correct (always). He will direct you to do righteous good and He
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
6

will forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allaah and His
messenger that is a great achievement” (Q33:70 - 71).

The best of speech is the speech of Allah. That is The Book of

Allah. The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (Peace
and Blessings of Allaah be upon him), the worst of all matters are
innovations (in the din); and every newly invented matter (in the
din) is an innovation, and every innovation is a deviation, and
every deviation leads to Hell-fire.

Concentrating in Salaah and being humble therein are among the

most important matters, and this is the essence of the Salaah.
Allaah says: “…and stand before Allaah with obedience”
Q2:238 “… and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for
al-khaashi’uun…’ Q 2:45 “Successful indeed are the believers,
those who offer their salaah (prayers) with all solemnity and full
submissiveness.” Q23:1-2. Khushuu’ is a means of gaining more
rewards from the Almighty Allaah and getting the heart purified.
It is an instrumental factor for the acceptance of Salaah, thus, it
is a significant factor in making a person successful in this life
and in hereafter. Therefore, it is a must for every worshipper to
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
7

pay attention to concentrating with proper humility in the prayer

and performing it in a tranquil and unhurried manner.

Khushuu’ is from an Arabic word “kha-sha-‘a” meaning

humbleness. It is used to refer to the submissiveness, tranquility,
humbleness, calmness, yearning, and quietness, out of love as
well as fear, within the heart due to the consciousness of Allaah’s
Greatness or through expressing one’s reverence to Allaah while
offering salaah. Khushuu’ means calmness, serenity, tranquillity,
dignity and humility. What makes a person have this khushuu’ is
fear of Allaah and the sense that He is always watching. Tafseer
Ibn Katheer, Daar al-Sha’b edn., 6/414. It was reported that
Mujaahid said: “’…and stand before Allaah with obedience”
Q2:238. Part of obedience is to bow, to be solemn and
submissive, to lower one’s gaze and to humble oneself out of fear
of Allaah, may He be glorified.” Ta’zeem Qadr al-Salaah, 1/188.
Khushuu’ in prayer happens when a person empties his heart for
it (prayer) and focuses on it to the exclusion of all else and prefers
it to everything else. Only then does he find comfort and joy in it,
as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
8

‘… and my joy has been made in salaah.’” (Tafseer Ibn Katheer,

5/456. The hadeeth is in Musnad Ahmad, 3/128 and Saheeh al-
Jaami’, 3124).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Five prayers which Allaah has made obligatory. Whoever does
wudoo’ properly for them, prays them on time, does rukoo’
properly and has perfect khushuu’, it is a promise from Allaah
that he will be forgiven, but whoever does not do this, has no such
promise – if Allaah wishes, He will forgive him, and if He wishes,
He will punish him.” Reported by Abu Dawood, no. 425; Saheeh
al-Jaami’, 3242. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) also said: “Whoever does wudoo’ and does it well,
then prays two rak’ahs focusing on them completely (according
to another report: and does not think of anything else), will be
forgiven all his previous sins (according to another report: will be
guaranteed Paradise).” Al-Bukhaari, al-Bagha edn., no. 158; al-
Nisaa'i, 1/95; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6166.

Heart is the place of khushuu’ and if it is in the state of khushuu’,

all other organs will be in the same state of calmness and
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
9

attentiveness. Its actualization lies in the presence of our hearts

while we are reporting for our daily duty towards Allaah. When
the heart is full of khushuu, the limbs also become subservient in
humility to Allah. The visible physical acts are not valid and
acceptable unless they are accompanied by appropriate actions of
the heart, because the invisible actions of the heart inevitably
affect the visible physical actions. So, the heart is like the control
unit for the physical faculties. If the control unit is good the
physical faculties will also be good and vice versa. Hence the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “In the
body there is a piece of flesh: if it is sound the whole body will
be sound and if it is corrupt then the whole body will be
corrupt.” Bukhaari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 49: Part of the
Hadith Narrated by An-Nu’man bin Bashir. So, khushuu’ is the
tranquility of the heart and the calmness of the organs.

However, when organ shows khushuu’ and no khushuu’ in the

heart it is called khushuu of hypocrisy. Hudhayfah (may Allaah
be pleased with him) used to say: “Beware of the khushuu’ of
hypocrisy.” He was asked, “What is the khushuu’ of hypocrisy?”
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
10

He said, “When the body shows khushuu’ but there is no

khushuu’ in the heart.” Fudayl ibn ‘Ayaad said: “It was disliked
for a man to show more khushuu’ than he had in his heart.” One
of them saw a man showing khushuu’ in his shoulders and body,
and said, “O So and so, khushuu’ is here” – and he pointed to his
chest, “not here” – and he pointed to his shoulders. al-Madaarij,
1/521

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, explaining

the difference between the khushuu’ of true faith and the
khushuu’ of hypocrisy: “The khushuu’ of true faith is when the
heart feels aware and humble before the greatness and glory of
Allaah, and is filled with awe, fear and shyness, so that the heart
is utterly humbled before Allaah and broken, as it were, with fear,
shyness, love and the recognition of the blessings of Allaah and
its own sins. So, no doubt the khushuu’ of the heart is followed
by the khushuu’ of the body. As for the khushuu’ of hypocrisy, it
is something that is put on with a great show, but there is no
khushuu’ in the heart. One of the Sahaabah used to say, ‘I seek
refuge with Allaah from the khushuu’ of hypocrisy.” It was said
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
11

to him, ‘What is the khushuu’ of hypocrisy?’ He said, “When the

body appears to have khushuu’ but there is no khushuu’ in the
heart.’ The person who truly feels khushuu’ before Allaah is a
person who no long feels the flames of physical desire; his heart
is pure and is filled with the light of the greatness of Allaah. His
own selfish desires have died because of the fear and awe which
have filled his heart to overflowing so that his physical faculties
have calmed down, his heart has become dignified and feels
secure in Allaah the remembrance of Him, and tranquillity
descends upon him from his Lord. So, he has become humble
(mukhbit) before Allaah, and the one who is humble is the one
who is assured. Land that is “mukhbit” is land that is low-lying,
in which water settles, so the heart that is “mukhbit” is humble
and content, like a low-lying spot of land into which water flows
and settles. The sign of this is that a person prostrates to his Lord
out of respect and humility, and never raises his head until he
meets Him. The arrogant heart, on the other hand, is one that is
content with its arrogance and raises itself up like an elevated
portion of land in which water never settles. This is the khushuu’
of true faith.”
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
12

As for overdoing it, and the khushuu’ of hypocrisy, this is the

attitude of a person who tries to make a great show of khushuu’,
but deep down he is still filled with desires. So, on the outside he
appears to have khushuu’, but the snake of the valley and the lion
of the forest reside within him, watching for prey. Al-Ruuh, p.
314, Daar al-Firk edn., Jordan.

Sadly, the first thing to be taken away from this ummah will be
khushuu’. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: “The first thing to be lifted up (taken away) from this
ummah will be khushuu’, until you will see no one who has
khushuu’.” Al-Haythami said in al-Majma’, 2/136: It was
reported by al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer, and its isnaad is hasan. See
also Saheeh alTargheeb, no. 543 he said it is saheeh. And when
Khushuu’ is lifted up, minds will be distracted, the concentration
and humility in salaah decreases and reward decreases as well
because the reward recorded is in proportion to the degree of
khushuu’ for every worshipper. The Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) said: “A slave may pray and have nothing
recorded for it except a tenth of it, or a ninth, or an eighth, or a
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
13

seventh, or a sixth, or a fifth, or a quarter, or a third, or a half.”

(Reported by Imaam Ahmad; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1626).

Remember, accursed Shaytaan, the enemy of Allaah, vowed to

mislead and tempt the sons of Adam, and that he will carry on
doing that until the Day of Resurrection, and he will not leave
any way of filling Hell with the progeny of Adam (peace be upon
him). This is inferred from his story in the Quran: “Then I will
come to them from before them and behind them, from their right
and from their left…” Q7:17. Shaytaan do not take a siesta
(“Take a siesta for the devils do not take a siesta” Narrated by
Abu Na’eem with a saheeh isnad. Saheeh al-Jami’, 4/147), hence
every believer needs to improve the khushuu’ and constantly
strive to guard the salaah to defeat shaytaan. This book, AL –
KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH, comprises of 65 productive tips to
excel in khushuu’ and it has been categorized in to 3; Before
Salaah, During Salaah and After Salaah.

Allaah says (Interpretation of the meaning): “Then do they not

reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from [any] other than
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
14

Allaah, they would have found within it much contradiction.”

Q4:82. Therefore, I stand to be corrected if any error is noticed
to improve subsequent editions.

Lastly, whatever written of truth and benefit is only due to

Allaah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me
alone. Allaah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of
Strength, may He continue to guide me and you. May Allaah
grant us understanding of His religion and make this book
beneficial to me and you Here, in this world, and in the Hereafter.

65 Tips to Build Connection with Allaah in Salaah

(Prayer)

Before Salaah
1. Seeking Religion Knowledge

Understanding religion helps one focus on the intended meaning

and importance of Salaah and know how to pray. Allaah says:

ِ ِ ِ ِ ‫شى م‬ َ َْ‫إِمَّنَا َي‬

ُ‫اَّللَ م ْن عبَاده الْعُلَ َماء‬

“It is only the learned amongst His servants who truly fear Allah”

Mu'awiyah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The

Messenger of Allah said, "When Allah wishes good for someone,

He bestows upon him the understanding of Deen." Al-Bukhari

and Muslim

Abdullah reported: Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him,

said, “Knowledge is not knowing many narrations. Verily,
knowledge is the fear of Allah.” Rawḍat al-‘Uqalā 9. Ibn Rajab
said, “Knowledge is not memorizing many narrations or sayings,
but rather it is a light that Allah places in the heart by which a
servant understands the truth and he distinguishes it from
falsehood.” Faḍl ‘Ilm al-Salaf 1/5

2. Avoiding Major and Minor Sins

Avoiding major sins (i.e. Shirk) and minor sins are very helpful in
gaining Khushuu’, as the heart becomes more receptive to the
words of Allah during and after Salaah.

is the Ran that Allah mentions in His Book: “Nay! But on their
hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used
to earn.” Q83:14. Hasan, Ibn Maajah Vol. 5, Book 37, Hadith

3. Reciting the Quran frequently and consistently as it

softens the hearts and prepares it for Khushuu’.

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah

houses of Allah (i.e. a mosque), reciting the Book of Allah, and
learning it together among themselves, but calmness (sakinah)
comes down to them, (Divine) mercy covers them (from above),
and the angels surround them, and Allah makes a mention of them
among those who are with Him. Sahih (Al-Albani), Sunan Abi

Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was reciting

and started jumping. The man came out, looked around but could
not find anything, yet the horse went on jumping. The next
morning, he mentioned that to the Prophet. The Prophet (peace

4. Defeating Shaytaan

Shaytaan has vowed to mislead man, if he is unable to stop believers

from observing salaah he sows hatred among them to render their
effort (Salaah) fruitless. So, defeat Shaytaan by reconciling with
your brothers.

Hearing call to prayer is a declaration that Allaah is more than

whatever man is doing. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah

call to prayer.

to finish your meal.” According to another report: “If dinner has
been put out and the iqaamah has been given for prayer, eat dinner
first and do not rush to finish it.” (Agreed upon. Al-Bukhaari,

your necks in line. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of
Muhammad! I can see the shaitan entering through the gaps in the
rows as if they are small sheep." Sunan an-Nasa'i 815

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“When any one of you prays facing a sutrah, let him get close to it
so that the Shaytaan cannot interrupt his prayer.” (Reported by
Abu Dawood, no. 695, 1/446; Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 650).

The Sunnah in getting close to the sutrah is to have three cubits

between it and the spot where one prostrates, or to allow enough
space for a sheep to pass between the two, as is reported in the
saheeh ahaadeeth. (Al-Bukhaari; see al-Fath, 1/574, 579).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) advised

the one who is praying not to allow anyone to pass between him

prevent him as most as he can. If he insists, he should fight him, for

he has a companion (i.e., shaytaan) with him.” (Reported by

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The wisdom

in using a sutrah is to lower your gaze and not to look beyond it,
and to prevent anyone from passing in front of you… and to
prevent the Shaytaan from passing in front of you and trying to
corrupt your prayer.” (Sharh Saheeh Muslim, 4/216).

being made, but when the call is finished he turns around and
distracts (the minds of those who pray), and when he hears the
Iqama, he again runs away so as not to hear its voice and when it
subsides, he comes back and distracts (the minds of those who stand

Anas ibn Maalik said, “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and

blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If any one of you feels
sleepy when he is praying, he should sleep until he (is rested
enough to) know what he is saying,” i.e., he should take a nap until
he no longer feels drowsy. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 210).

32. Not Praying behind Someone who is Talking

٦٩٤‫ ( ال تصلوا خلف النائم وال املتحدث) رواه أبو داود رقم‬: ‫النب صلى اهللا عليه و سلم قال‬

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade

this; he said: “Do not pray behind one who is sleeping or one who
is talking.” (Reported by Abu Dawood, no. 694; Saheeh al-Jaami’,

Al-Khattaabi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “As for praying
behind people who are talking, al-Shaafa'i and Ahmad ibn Hanbal
considered this to be makrooh, because their talk distracts the
worshipper from his prayer.” (‘Awn al-Ma’bood, 2/388).

Al-Bukhaari, may Allaah have mercy on him, quoted the hadeeth

of ‘Aa’ishah in his Saheeh, Baab al-Salaah khalf al-Naa’im: “The
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray
whilst I was lying across from him on his bed…” (Saheeh al-
Bukhaari, Kitaab al-Salaah). Mujaahid, Taawoos and Maalik
thought it makrooh to pray facing someone who was sleeping, lest
he expose something that would distract the worshipper from his
prayer. (Fath al-Baari)

Imaam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about

So, he tries to stop him from establishing prayer in the first place,
then he continues trying to entice him and make him forget, and
“making assaults on him with his cavalry and infantry” (cf. Al-Isra’
17:64), until he thinks of prayer as less important, so he starts to
neglect it, and eventually gives it up altogether. If the Shaytaan fails
to achieve this, and the person ignores him and starts to pray, the
enemy of Allaah will come and try to distract him, by reminding
him of things that he did not remember or think of before he
started praying. A person may have forgotten about something
altogether, but the Shaytaan will remind him of it when he starts
praying, so as to distract him from his prayers and take him away
from Allaah, so that his heart will no longer be in his prayers, and
he will lose out on the honour and reward of Allaah turning toward
him, which is only attained by the one whose heart is really in his
prayer. Thus he will finish his prayer no better off than when he
started, with his burden of sins not reduced at all by his salaah,
because prayer only expiates for sins when it is done properly, with
perfect khushoo’, and the person stands before Allaah in body and
soul.” (Al-Waabil al-Sayib, p. 36).

Ibn Rajab comments on this tradition, saying: The explanation

of excellence in the Prophet’s saying that you worship Allah as
if you see Him indicates that the servant worships Allah in this
manner, which is consciousness of His immanence and that he
is in front of Him as if he sees Him. This requires reverence,
fear, veneration, and glorification… and also requires sincerity
in worship and the effort to make it excellent, complete, and
perfect. Jāmi’ al-‘Ulūm wal-Ḥikam 2

51. Reflecting upon the Meaning of Quran Deeply and

Adhkaar

Reflecting upon the meanings of the adhkaar of the prayer and the
verses of Qur’an that one recites in the prayer; this is one of the
greatest means of attaining presence of mind and not letting one’s
heart be distracted.

‫( كتاب أنزلناه إليك مبارك ليد بروا آَيته وليذﹼكر أولوا األلباب) وال َيصل التدبر إال ِبلعلم مبعَّن‬

)‫َير واعليها صم ا وعمياًن‬

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “(This is) a Book (the

Qur’aan) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that
they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding
may remember.” (Saad 38:29).

that they will get the reward in this world and not in the Hereafter).

“Remember death in your prayer, for the man who remembers
death during his prayer is bound to pray properly and pray the
prayer of a man who does not think that he will pray any other
prayer.” (al-Silsilat al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 1421.

It was reported from al-Suyooti that al-Haafiz ibn Hajar classed this
hadeeth as hasan). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) also advised Abu Ayyoob (may Allaah be pleased with
him): “When you stand up to pray, pray a farewell prayer.”

prayer of farewell, thinking that he will never offer another prayer
after that. Ad-Daylami narrated in Musnad al-Firdaws from Anas
(may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Remember death when you
pray, for if a man remembers death when he prays, he will strive to
make his prayer good. Pray the prayer of a man who does not think
that he will ever pray another prayer, and beware of any matter
that may require you to offer an apology.” Classed as hasan by al-
Haafiz as it says in al-Maqaasid al-Hasanah (p. 226); classed as hasan
by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami‘ (849).

Bilaal came to tell him that it was time to pray, and when he saw
him weeping, he said, “O Messenger of Allaah, you are weeping
when Allaah has forgiven you all your past and future sins?” He
said, “Should I not be a grateful slave? Tonight some aayaat have

57. Reciting in Slow, Rhythmic tones (tarteel) and Making

One’s Voice Beautiful when Reciting

Beautifying the recitation of the Quran has a positive impact on

the heart of the listeners.

As Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “… and recite the

Qur’aan (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style.” (al-
Muzzammil 73:4). The recitation of the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) was clear, with each letter
pronounced distinctly.” (Musnad Ahmad, 6/294, with a saheeh
isnaad. Sifat al-Salaah, p. 105). The Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) “would recite a soorah in such slow rhythmic
tones that it would be longer than would seem possible.”
(Reported by Muslim, no. 733).
AL – KHUSHUU’ IN SALAAH Abubakr Amosa Ladi Ibraheem
89

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as when

he said, “Beautify the Qur’aan with your voices, for a fine voice
increases the Qur’aan in beauty.” (Reported by al-Haakim, 1/575;
Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 3581).

Beautifying it with one’s voice does not mean elongating the

vowels and giving it a tune in the manner of corrupt people; it
means beautifying one’s voice with the fear of Allaah, as the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Truly,
the one who has one of the finest voices among the people for
reciting the Qur’aan is the one whom you think fears Allaah when
you hear him recite.” (Reported by Ibn Maajah, 1/1339; Saheeh
al-Jaami’, no. 2202).

58. Alternate between the Surah and Various Authentic

Sunan of Prayer

It is better to change the Surah that one recites from time to time
to avoid the mechanic-like state of repetition especially in
obligatory prayer.

and Qaaf (50), and shorter mufassal soorahs such as Idhaa al-shamsu

(the last two soorahs). It was reported that he recited al-Room (30),

about it, and he said, ‘I prostrated behind Abu’l-Qaasim (the
Prophet) (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and I will
continue to do so until I meet him again.” (Saheeh al-Bukhaari,
Kitaab al-Adhaan, Baab al-Jahr bi’l-‘Ishaa’). Abu Hurayrah said:
“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: ‘When the son of Adam recites a sajdah, the Shaytaan
goes away weeping, saying, “Woe to him! He was commanded to
prostrate and he prostrated, so Paradise is his; I was ordered to

mountains, but they declined to bear it and were afraid of it, but I
bore it (cf. Al-Ahzaab 33:72).” (Silaah alYaqazaan li Tard al-

Rabah reported: It was said to Hatim Al-Asam, “How do you

pray so well?” Hatim said: I establish the command, I walk with
fear, I begin prayer with a sincere intention, I exalt Allah with
grandeur, I recite with a measured recitation and reflection, I
bow with reverence, I prostrate with humility, I sit to
complete the testimony, and I invoke peace properly and
according to the prophetic tradition. Then I sincerely
surrender the prayer to Allah the Exalted and I return to
myself afraid that it will not be accepted from me. I guard it
with effort in this way until I will die. Hilyat Al-Awliya

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Allaah, the Blessed and Exalted has said: ‘I have divided the prayer
between Myself and My slave, into two halves, and My slave shall
have what he has asked for.” When the slave says ‘Praise be to
Allaah, Lord of the Worlds,’ Allaah says, ‘My slave has praised Me.’
When the slave says, ‘The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy,’
Allaah says, ‘My slave has extolled me.’ When the slave says,
‘Master of the Day of Judgement,’ Allaah says, ‘My slave has
glorified me.’ When the slave says, ‘It is You alone we worship and
it is You alone we ask for help,’ Allaah says, ‘This is between Me
and My slave, and My slave shall have what he asked for.’ When
the slave says, ‘Guide us to the Straight Path, the path of those
whom You have favoured, not the path of those who receive Your
anger, nor of those who go astray,’ Allaah says, ‘All these are for
My slave, and My slave shall have what he asked for.’” (Saheeh
Muslim, Kitaab alSalaah, Baab wujoob qiraa’at al-Faatihah fi kulli
rak’ah). (Words in italics are the translation of the meaning of

and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When any one of you
stands to pray, he is conversing with his Lord, so let him pay
attention to how he speaks to Him.” (al-Haakim, al-Mustadrak,
1/236; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1538).

62. Striving to offer Du’aa’ at the Appropriate times During

is more powerful against the Shaytaan than iron” (reported by
Imaam Ahmad, 2/119, with a hasan isnaad, as stated in Sifat al-
Salaah, p. 159), i.e., pointing with the forefinger during the
Tashahhud is more painful to the Shaytaan than being beaten with
a rod of iron, because it reminds the slave of the Unity of Allaah
and to be sincere in his worship of Him alone, and this is what the
Shaytaan hates most; we seek refuge with Allaah from him.” (al-
Fath al-Rabbani by al-Saa’idi, 4/15).

Abu Huraira said, "Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah

be upon him) put me in charge of the Zakat of Ramadan (i.e.
Zakat-ul-Fitr). Someone came to me and started scooping some
of the foodstuff of (Zakat) with both hands. I caught him and told
him that I would take him to Allah's Messenger (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him)." Then Abu Huraira told the
whole narration and added "He (i.e. the thief) said, 'Whenever you
go to your bed, recite the Verse of "Al-Kursi" (2.255) for then a
guardian from Allah will be guarding you, and Satan will not
approach you till dawn.' " On that the Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) said, "He told you the truth, though he is a
liar, and he (the thief) himself was the Satan." Sahih al-Bukhari

Conclusion
Spiritual connection with Allaah in Salaah is attainable through
khushuu’. Khushuu’ is the tranquility of the heart and the calmness
of the organs. That is, to worship Allah as if we can perceive Him

and all of the realities of the Unseen world. Building khushuu’ in

salaah (prayer) is a difficult task as Shaytaan habitually tries to stop
believers from establishing prayer, if not succeeded, then he
continues trying to entice him and make him forget to disconnect
him spiritually. However, every worshipper needs to develop
interest in practicing steps to gain spiritual connection which, over
time, will accumulate and help to reach the goal. It has been
confirmed from phophetic narrations that there is no reward for
the prayer except for the portion in which a person had proper
presence of mind corroborated by narrations from the
Companions like Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him),
where he said: “You will gain nothing from your prayer except
what you focus on.” And a Salaah with khushuu’ is a success, and
every success serves as a motivational means for another success.

The 65 tips to attain khushuu’ and other actions not mentioned

here may be affected or changed in cases of necessity, but if there
is no necessity, then they should be diligently applied to safeguard
salaah from accursed Shaytaan. Meanwhile, believers should not
forget to always seek refuge with Allaah from heart that has no

khushuu’. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon

him) used to say in his du’aa’: “Allaahumma innee a’oodhu bika
min qalbin laa yakhsha’… (O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from
a heart that has no khushoo’…).” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi,
5/485, no. 3482; Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2769).
