Report: UV-3600 Plus UV-VIS-NIR Spectrophotometer from
Shimadzu

Introduction
Spectrophotometers were originally developed for the absorption
measurement of liquid samples. In recent years, however, high-
precision, high-energy spectrophotometers have hit the market due to
the rapid increase in reflection and absorption measurements on solid
samples, including semiconductors, films, glass, and absorbing materials.
In the meantime, the field of life sciences demands high-throughput
analyzers offering high-sensitivity and high-speed measurement of ultra-
trace samples. Now Shimadzu’s UV-3600 Plus UV-VIS-NIR
spectrophotometer can be used for this purpose. It consists of latest
technology to achieve high sensitivity, high resolution and an ultra-low
stray light level. It offers scientists an opportunity to provide high-
performance analyses in a wealth of application areas, including:
materials science, including photovoltaic, electronics, optical coatings,
and textiles; food science; pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and life sciences;
and chemicals.

Following are the important functions of Shimadzu’s UV-3600 plus UV-

High Sensitivity:
The UV-3600 Plus provides precise transmittance or reactance
measurements in the ultraviolet to near-infrared regions. The level of
sensitivity in the near-infrared region is significantly enhanced by using
the combination of an InGaAs detector and a cooled PbS detector for
this region. Spectra can be obtained without interruption for the entire
range, with a high level of sensitivity and precision.

High Resolution, Low Stray-Light Level, and Wide Wavelength

Range:
The UV-3600 Plus is equipped with a high-performance, grating-grating
double monochromatic, and achieves a low stray-light level with high
resolution. The wavelength range is 185 to 3,300 nm. This instrument
can perform spectrophotometry for various types of samples, ranging
from those requiring high resolution, such as gas samples, to highly
concentrated liquid samples.

Wide Range of Optional Accessories:

The three-detector Multi-purpose large-sample compartment or
Integrating sphere options enable high-sensitivity measurement of solid
samples. Use the ASR Series of absolute specular reflectance accessories
to perform high-accuracy absolute reflectance measurements. In
addition, temperature-controlled cell holders and micro cell holders are
available to handle a wide range of measurement applications. The all-
in-one UV Probe software is equipped with four measurement modes to
handle a wide variety of data processing needs for the UV-3600 Plus.
These modes include:
 Spectrum
 Photometric
 Kinetics (time course management)
 Report generator

Optional software:

 DTL-UVPC Solar Transmittance Measurement Software

 Color Measurement Software
 Film Thickness Measurement Software

Precautions:
1. UV-light can cause temporary or permanent loss of vision and
sunburn. To prevent exposure do not install in any application
that allows exposure of UV-Light
2. Do not install in out doo application
3. Do not install in humid place
4. Do not install in a closet grill application
5. Do not expose wiring or plastic parts to UV-light because it can
cause degradation.

Applications:

Transmittance Measurement of Lenses:

Imaging devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and

security cameras, are all equipped with lenses. The
transmittance of a lens is one factor that determines lens
performance. However, because the lens itself focuses light, it
is an especially difficult type of sample to measure
accurately.
Because of the focal capability of lenses, the total light
passing through the spectrophotometer during the
measurement of the baseline can be different than that after
passing through the lens during measurement due to
refraction. In such cases, the use of an integrating sphere can
be used to collect all the light passing through the lens and
provide for more accurate measurements. In addition, using
the transmission-type integrating sphere included with the
BIS-603 can reduce measurement errors.

Furthermore, using the V stage, provided as standard on the

MPC-603 multi-purpose large-sample compartment, allows
measuring the transmittance of lenses of various lengths and
sizes.
The MPC-603 and BIS-603 are an ideal combination for
measuring lenses.

Band Gap Calculation:

Research into solar-cell and photo catalytic materials often

involves the measurement of the band gap, which is a basic
physical property of the materials.
The band gap refers to the energy difference between the top
of the valence band filled with electrons and the bottom of
the conduction band devoid of electrons. The wavelength
range of the UV-3600 Plus is extremely effective for band gap
calculations.
A typical band gap result curve is shown.
