Earth and Life Sciences

TOPIC / LESSON NAME Minerals and Rocks

CONTENT STANDARDS The learners demonstrate an understanding of:

1. the three main categories of rocks
2. the origin and environment of formation of common
minerals and rocks
CULMINATING PERFORMANCE Conduct a survey to assess possible geological hazards that
STANDARDS the community may experience.

PERFORMANCE TASK The learners shall conduct a comprehensive and practical

geologic survey that will determine the hazards found in
their area. They will also assess the degree of harm these
may cause on the community’s safety and well-being.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES 1. Identify common rock-forming minerals using their
physical and chemical properties.
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES Through field exposure and discussion, the learners shall
be able to:
1.observe and collect different rocks in the school ground;
2. differentiate the physical and chemical properties of
minerals; and
3. make a report about the different types of rock-forming
minerals.
TIME ALLOTMENT 60 minutes

MATERIALS NEEDED activity sheet, TV screen, laptop

Introduction a. Reviewing on earth’s subsystem by showing a picture.

(5 minutes)
A. What can you say about the

Questions:
A. What message do you get from the given haiku?
B. Are rocks significant to us? How?

Instruction The teacher will explain the purpose of the field

observation and the task of the group. Each group will be
(25 minutes)
given an activity worksheet that will serve as their guide as
they perform the activity.
Activity Worksheet

For 10 minutes, students will go to the school ground to

observe and collect different samples of rocks. They will be
given another 5 minutes to discuss the characteristics of
such rocks based on its physical and chemical properties.
They will present their output to the class.
The teacher will discuss the lesson to confirm the works
done by the class by showing pictures of rocks and
minerals.
Video clips will be shown to the class.
