Abstract

Assessing student learning is an essential part of the learning process in the classroom. It

is important to evaluate whether the students are achieving the learning goals and how well the

teacher is delivering the material. If there are concepts that a number of students are not under-

standing, it is obvious that the material was not covered in a way that helped the students under-

stand it. There are many different ways to assess learning, and finding ways that work best for

the students and give the best representation of their understanding of the content is an important

step in the classroom.

Literary Review: “The Implementation of Continuous Assessment in Social Studies in

Selected Secondary Schools In Yola Metropolis”

This journal is written about a school in Nigeria which has recently implemented Social

Studies into its curriculum. Due to this, it is an interesting perspective because there are not a lot

of preconceived notions about this particular subject matter in this school system. The main fo-

cus of this journal is the idea of continuous assessment as a way of making sure students are pro-

gressing at an appropriate rate and not getting too far behind to be able to recover. “By continu-

ous assessment we mean assessing or weighing performance of students periodically to deter-

mine progress made in teaching and learning activities” (Sahabo, 2015). I agree with this re-

search and think it is extremely important to be continuously assessing and building up to a large

assessment at the end of a unit. One of the biggest findings of this study was that the “continuous

assessment program would have been more successful if all hands are on deck” (Sahabo, 2015).

This is an important concept to me because it is important to prepare students for future classes

that will be taught by different teachers, and with that being said every student that takes a par-

ticular class needs to achieve the same learning goals regardless of the instructor. In order to en-

sure that students are being properly prepared, assessment is necessary and needs to be complet-

ed across the board. While it is okay for different teacher to assess in ways that they see fit, they

still need to have some form of assessment to ensure achievement of the learning goals.

Artifacts Included for Reflection: Domain B

For Domain B, I have included several different examples of student work that show dif-

ferent forms of assessment that I use throughout the year. One of them is an essay that my stu-

dents wrote at the end of a large unit on World War II, and it required them to compile informa-

tion that they obtained over the course of the whole unit as well as do research on their own. I

like to use writing in my assessments because I think it is an important skill to develop and it

also gives a much better representation of their understanding of the concepts than something

multiple choice or fill in the blank. The other assessment I included was a short answer quiz

about the Great Depression. It is important to assess students based on things that they know,

rather than are able to research and write about because then it is apparent that they actually

know the material and aren’t just utilizing research. Nearly all of my assessments use writing of

some type as a way to help my students improve their writing abilities as a way of preparing for

their future endeavors.
